SANTIAGO, Chile—Every night, a commercial airliner full of Haitians arrives in this city’s international airport carrying families who have bid adieu to their poor island nation for a new life here.As the Trump administration aims to curb immigration, one of Latin America’s richest and safest countries has opened its doors to some of the region’s poorest migrants in record numbers. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans have fled their crime-ridden country in recent years for Chile, which has a history of receiving Bolivian, Peruvian and Colombian migrants. But the most dramatic surge has come from Haiti. Last year, almost 105,000 Haitians entered

The nation that really has embraced it is Colombia which has taken in hundreds of thousands of brother Venezuelans. They ought to get some credit for that because the Venezuelans are real refugees who will go back when it´s safe again. They aren´t looking for free stuff.

FTA, file under horsehockey:

...She and other supporters of the policy—including officials in outgoing President Michelle Bachelet’s government—say the migrants help shoulder the costs of an aging population that economists say will demand heavier spending on health care and pensions in coming decades. Due to a falling fertility rate and an 82-year life expectancy, the number of working-age Chileans for every retiree is on pace to fall from 7.6 in 2000 to 3.6 in 2030...

Fact: Chile has a fully funded private pension system in place of social security. There is no social security trust fund to run out because no such thing exists. Everyone in Chile saves on their own and takes home a fat pension on retirement. It´s the global gold standard in pension funds and it´s called The Chilean Model.

The reform movement fueled by political centrists is getting stronger all over the country, but it needs a heavyweight 2020 Independent presidential candidate to gain national traction and big-time financial backing. Ohio Gov. John Kasich ought to take up that challenge. He can’t get the nomination of his own party. Although he’s a lifelong Republican who won statewide in a key battleground state the GOP needs to win the presidency, he’s become much too moderate, not to mention high-principled and independent, for the party.
