An Olympian break in the war

A few Ping-Pong balls broke the Cold War ice around China a generation ago, following Richard Nixon’s stunning trip to Beijing (when it was still called Peiping), and soon the United States and China were on their way to normal diplomatic relations. China even toned down its colorful bellicose rhetoric about what it could do to America and the West, probably putting a few of Chairman Mao’s best writers out of business. Kim Jong-un’s writers learned a lot about theatrical rhetoric from the Chairman’s writing shop. This time the leader of an all-female pop group may be the designated Ping-Pong ball. Hyon

Is California too much of a good thing?

Cutting Texas down to size is always a good thing to do, and if we have to carve up California to do it, well, that’s life. The current popular notion in California would divide the Golden State into three new states, something that could be no longer be called Golden but perhaps Plastic, Pewter and Brass. This is all very fanciful, as many things are in California, but Californians will vote in November whether to split in three. Some Californians, first among them Tim Draper, a billionaire high-tech venture capitalist, thinks it’s a bully idea. If the referendum passes, unlikely as

A new study, conducted by Norwegian scientists, shows that IQ scores of today’s young people are in decline, putting an end to the post-war trend of rising intelligence. After the Second World War young people’s IQs were steadily rising. It was dubbed the Flynn effect after New Zealand intelligence researcher James Flynn. This phenomenon saw average IQ scores rise about three points per decade. But researches from the Ragnar Frisch Centre for Economic Research in Oslo say the Flynn effect is now past its peak. In a paper, published in the PNAS journal, Norwegian scientists Ole Rogeberg and Bernt Bratsberg analyzed the data

If Jeff Sessions and Christopher Wray want to clean house at the FBI, they’ll be well advised to pack a good lunch. Cleaning this house will be an all-day job. The agency under James B. Comey has been more corrupt than we thought. The long-awaited findings of the inspector general at the Justice Department were finally released Thursday, and it reveals clearly that officials high up in the food chain were out to protect Hillary Clinton by any means necessary. The inspector general discovered a smoking gun, and, if we are to believe our eyes, couldn’t see clearly whether there was a bullet in it. Peter Strzok, the FBI official

It has been two weeks since vulgar comedian Samantha Bee’s vile attack against Ivanka Trump on Full Frontal, in which she called the President’s daughter a “feckless c**t” who should seduce her father, and corporate advertisers continued to keep their distance for her June 13 episode with just six non-Turner-owned promos sponsoring the show. On the May 30 episode of Bee’s program, when she first made her comment about Ivanka, the program boasted a sturdy 19 advertising spots. At that time, her advertisers included: Orkin, Taco Bell, Apple, Verizon, Haagen-Dazs, Jim Beam, Windows, Febreze, Discover, Geico,

Norwegian state broadcaster NRK announced this week that President Trump is now officially in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize after his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Tuesday. Norwegian lawmakers Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen of the country’s Progress Party – similar to the Republican Party in the U.S. – nominated the president this week for the 2019 prize. The Norwegian politicians pointed to the recent summit as the reason for the nomination, according to a joint statement fed through Google translate. “Through his untraditional style, President Trump has helped

John Oliver used to do these satirical joke segments about your banter with Charlie Rose on his show. Do you look back at that now, after Rose was fired following multiple accusations of sexual harassment, and think about it differently? I don’t know, because it really was in good fun. It was very harmless. I had no idea that we would ever be part of the #MeToo story. I actually thought what John Oliver was doing was pretty funny. Has it made you think about how you relate to male colleagues on air? No. I am not worried about people misinterpreting

The Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission filed a formal complaint Tuesday against Livingston County District Court Judge Theresa Brennan for misconduct in office, more than a year after her affair with a Michigan State Police detective came to light. The commission also accused Brennan of misusing her office for personal advantage or gain, failing to maintain high standards of conduct, failing to respect and follow the law and allowing social and other relationships to influence her conduct or judgment. It also said she used the prestige of office to advance her personal business interests and failed to be “patient, dignified and courteous” to

(Coronatus means "crowned.") The tiny, disc-shaped animal was about a 1/2 inch long, with raised spiral grooves on its surface. It spent its entire life embedded on the ocean floor, likely never moving, according to scientists from the University of California – Riverside. A second small animal, an egg-shaped critter that may have looked like a raisin, was also discovered.

Michelle Obama joined her fellow former first lady Laura Bush Monday in criticizing the hard-line Trump administration immigration policy that has led to families being separated at the border. Bush, the wife of former President George W. Bush, penned a tweet over the weekend in which she echoed the widespread condemnation of the new directive from Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “I live in a border state,” Bush said. “I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.” Quoting that tweet, Obama wrote that “sometimes truth transcends

Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, declined to blame President Trump or the Department of Homeland Security specifically in remarks to a group of voters at a park here. He called images of children separated from their parents “pretty disturbing” and “heartbreaking.” “I think immediately we should go back to the setting where we’re not ripping children away from their parents, and then we expect Congress to take

"Young people are setting aside their differences and identifying issues they think need to change. And they can do everything to get that change

Illegal Immigration: The latest outrage by the Trump administration is its policy of "ripping" children away from parents who´ve crossed the border illegally. As with so many other things involving Trump, there´s plenty of emotion but precious little in the way of facts. The furor reached critical mass after the Department of Homeland Security said on Friday that 1,995 children had been separated from their illegal border crossing parents from mid-April through May. That number included, DHS said, cases where the adults were arrested for illegal entry, immigration violations, or possible criminal conduct. The practice has generated a rising storm of protests,

Roseanne Barr has become untouchable due to the "Valerie Jarrett/Ambien/Planet of the Apes" controversy, irrevocably contaminated by racism. This presents a problem for ABC, which canceled her revived show but wants the show to return in some form because it had high ratings. The apparent solution is to create a new show focused on the daughter character "Darlene," which would exclude Roseanne. Unfortunately, Roseanne Barr owns a chunk of the show, and ABC doesn´t want to be seen letting Barr profit from it, so ABC is in talks to buy the show from Barr so she would not technically profit

The Justice Department’s tepid OIG report, with its risible assertion that there was no political bias in the FBI’s Clinton email probe, suggests that it was written by people afraid to tell the unvarnished truth about the conduct of the federal government’s police apparatus, an agency that openly defies congressional oversight and has participated in a vendetta against a sitting president. The FBI’s leadership clearly hopes that the Democrats will win majorities in Congress and put a halt to the investigations into its multifarious abuses of power. The OIG is loath to face the ruthless reprisals that would inevitably follow

FBI Director Wray has said nothing to reassure Americans that he understands the serious corruption highlighted in the IG report. The FBI´s cover-ups and stonewalling on Wray´s watch add to his credibility problems. Both in is his press conference after the IG report was released, and in his testimony Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Director Wray demonstrated he was more concerned about protecting the reputation of the institution of the FBI than about the astonishing corruption of top FBI officials detailed in the IG report. During today’s hearing we heard about FBI agents who aren’t corrupt and how the Clinton email

Starbucks shares fell as much as 3% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the coffeehouse chain provided a weak sales forecast for its upcoming quarter and said it would shutter 150 stores in fiscal 2019. The Seattle-based company said it would close underperforming stores in “densely penetrated markets” and slow its rate of store growth. Starbucks said it traditionally closes about 50 underperforming locations annually. Starbucks said it expects same-store sales to grow 1% in its third fiscal quarter of 2017.
