An Olympian break in the war
between the words

A few Ping-Pong balls broke the Cold War ice around China a generation ago, following Richard Nixon’s stunning trip to Beijing (when it was still called Peiping), and soon the United States and China were on their way to normal diplomatic relations. China even toned down its colorful bellicose rhetoric about what it could do to America and the West, probably putting a few of Chairman Mao’s best writers out of business. Kim Jong-un’s writers learned a lot about theatrical rhetoric from the Chairman’s writing shop. This time the leader of an all-female pop group may be the designated Ping-Pong ball. Hyon

Trump will not declassify Democrats´

President Trump will not declassify the memo from Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee as it currently is written, the White House announced in a letter Friday night. The Democrats´ memo is a rebuttal to the GOP memo about surveillance of a former Trump campaign official. "Although the president is inclined to declassify the Feb. 5th memorandum, because the memorandum contains numerous properly classified and especially sensitive passages, he is unable to do so at this time," the letter from White House counsel Don McGahn to Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, reads. If great Washington scandals come in threes, as disasters are said to do, we’re there. First there was Watergate, regarded as the granddaddy of them all. A third-rate burglary at the Watergate Hotel grew to a scandal big enough to cashier a president. This was followed a decade later by Iran-Contra, an attempt by Reagan administration rogues to exploit trouble in one country to fix a problem in another, and now there’s what may be the most far-reaching scandal of all. The administration of Barack Obama, eager to advance the interests of Hillary Clinton, who was to be the front for his

The Danish government is poised to become the next European country to introduce a ban on Islamic full-face coverings in public places. The government said it planned to fine people who wore items including the burqa and the niqab which are worn by some Muslim women. Under the proposals anyone found covering their face would be fined 1,000 kroner (£120), or up to 10,000 kroner (£1,200) if they are repeatedly caught. “It is incompatible with the values of the Danish society or the respect for the community to keep the face hidden when meeting each other in the public space,” Justice Minister Justice

The United Arab Emirates, a model Persian Gulf petro-state where endless billions from crude exports feed a giant sovereign wealth fund, isn’t the most obvious customer for Texan oil. Yet, in a trade that illustrates how the rise of the American shale industry is upending energy markets across the globe, the U.A.E. bought oil directly from the U.S. in December, according to data from the federal government. A tanker sailed from Houston and arrived in the Persian Gulf last month. The cargo of American condensate, a type of very light crude oil, was preferred to regional grades because its superior quality made

“Today is the end of [liberal education at Kenyon College],” Fred Baumann, a professor of political science at Kenyon, proclaimed last week to a panel and its audience. The panel had been convened to discuss the retraction of professor and playwright Wendy MacLeod’s latest play, The Good Samaritan. MacLeod’s work had been circulated to the students and community, with the intention of production in early April. The show centers on the experiences of Guatemalan illegal immigrants working only a few dozen miles away from Kenyon on an egg farm. As MacLeod explained in an email to the campus about the

Why I teach a course called “White Racism”

The need for students to learn about racism in American society existed long before I began teaching a course called “White Racism” at Florida Gulf Coast University earlier this year. I chose to title my course “White Racism” because I thought it was scholarly and succinct, precise and powerful. (snip) The most common complaint about my course that I’ve encountered thus far is that anybody can be racist. They ask indignantly: What about “black racism”? Or what about other forms of racism they believe exist on the part of Latinos, Asian Americans and Native peoples. My answer is: There is

Hillary Clinton feels very overwhelmed by Donald Trump’s presidency, but she intends to keep fighting his agenda. “I intend to keep fighting to pursue his agenda and remain on the front lines of democracy,” she told a group of students at Georgetown University on Monday. Clinton appeared at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security to present human rights awards named in her honor to female activists. She told attendees that advancing women’s rights and opportunities is the “unfinished business of the 21st century” and she plans to stick around to help finish the job, according to the Washington Post.

I don’t want to sound cynical. I love my country, and I thank God I was born and raised here in America. There’s a reason people flock to the USA from around the world. There’s a reason the rest of the world follows our lead. We Americans have a lot to be thankful for, and in some significant ways, we are very different than many other nations on the planet, especially when it comes to corruption and graft. But in the aftermath of the release “the memo,” I find myself wondering: Just how corrupt are we? Has our system gotten

President Donald Trump´s oldest son suggested on Saturday that claims by Democrats of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia are ironic, since such accusations resemble McCarthyism. Speed skater Shani Davis has boycotted the opening ceremony at the winter Olympics after a coin toss was used to decide who would lead out the U.S. delegation. That decision put luge star Erin Hamlin at the front of the pack. On Friday, she beamed a broad smile as she carried the U.S. flag in Pyeongchang, South Korea, to the tune of "Gangnam Style." Hamlin, 31, was chosen in a coin toss with Davis, 35, one of just a few black athletes on Team USA. That coin flip came after the two tied 4-4 in a vote among eight U.S. winter sport

President Trump rarely if ever reads the President’s Daily Brief — a document that summarizes US intelligence on important events from trouble spots around the world, according to a new report. Instead, Trump relies on a staffer to give him an oral summary, The Washington Post reported Friday, citing sources. The commander-in-chief prefers television to reading and has a notoriously short attention span, according to multiple reports, preferring that memos be kept to a single page with bullet points. But skipping the daily briefing breaks precedent with the last seven presidents to hold office. One source said that reading the document doesn’t jibe with

The 2018 Winter Olympics officially opened on Friday but the first bit of drama has already boiled over: a three-way dispute between Adam Rippon, the first openly gay American man to qualify to compete in the Winter Games; Mike Pence, the conservative vice president and longtime opponent of gay rights; and the newspaper USA Today. As controversies go, this one seems to have it all. Mr. Rippon, a charismatic 28-year-old figure skater, newly minted gay icon and social media darling, criticized Mr. Pence for his opposition to gay rights and long-rumored support of conversion therapy, a discredited practice that proponents claim

An administration siccing the surveillance state on the opposition party’s presidential candidate based on dubious reports compiled by the favored presidential candidate’s campaign ranks as a terribly reckless strategy risking the future freedom of its architects for their future power, no? “Not if you think you will win the election and no one will ever find out,” an animated Joseph diGenova tells The American Spectator. “That’s why they did it. Russia Scandal: Bit by bit, piece by piece, the growing scandal of the FBI´s spying on the Trump campaign is being revealed for what it is: an effort to weaponize the federal intelligence bureaucracy for use by Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party. Recent revelations point to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and a secretive group of supporters and hangers-on both inside and outside of the FBI and Justice Department as having a far deeper personal involvement in the investigation than first thought. Fears of a politicized and manipulative "deep state" are looking less paranoid by the day. The involvement

Melania Trump has been beloved as First Lady for her rare combination of elegance and daring fashion sense. She initially sparked faux-indignation in the past by wearing spiky stilettos, even on official visits, like viewing the Harvey aftermath. So, when the First Lady got off Air Force One this week wearing not only stilettos but a yellow trenchcoat and sweater, along with a sleek brown leather skirt, she was clearly embracing a vision of strong femininity. As she stood in front of Marine One, she showed how to pull off the wind swept look with the off-shoulder trench coat.
