6-year-old boy infected
with rabies has died

NBC News, by Maggie Fox

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 1/15/2018 1:38:46 PM

A 6-year-old Florida boy fighting rabies has died, his father said Sunday. Ryker Roque was being kept under anesthesia in an Orlando hospital in a desperate bid to save him from the deadliest virus there is. (Snip) "(I) found a bat, put it in a little bucket, put it on the porch and I had asked my son, ´don´t touch it under any circumstances´," Roque told NBC News. "So, apparently he put his hand in there and touched it and he said it only scratched him, so I frantically googled it real quick and it says to wash his hands

Why did the father pick-up a sick bat in the first place? And to top it off, they didn´t take the kid to the doctor until he had symptoms.

How could the father not realize how dangerous a bat is? Oh my goodness. Poor little guy. RIP

About 20 years ago - - a sleeping young man in NY was strangled to death by his "pet" boa constrictor.

One of his horrified female relatives later exclaimed to a reporter, "I can´t believe this. We trusted that snake!"

No, my friends - - there is no cure for stupid - - and there never will be.

This father is going to have a very hard time dealing with this situation. He should have disposed of the animal immediately, never left his son alone with it, taken son to doctor when he found out he was scratched. As a mother I don´t know if I could ever forgive him but then again she could have taken her son to the doctor and didn´t. It was a complete common sense breakdown on the parents part. Lord welcome this little soul home and somehow help the parents heal.

Tell the kid not to touch it, then leave him alone with it?
This is an actual case of terminal stupidity. Too bad the kid had to pay the price.

The poor little boy. This tragedy is the consequence of parents being afraid of their children and their tantrums. My parents would have "given [me] something to cry about" and rushed me to the ER.

What a tragedy! Rabies is always a concern out here in rural Virginia, so it´s hard to imagine how this happened.
Several years ago one of our local huntsmen was pulling hounds off of a cornered fox when the fox turned and bit him. He had previously had the preventive shots that are given vets and others who might be exposed routinely but, of course, he got the extra shots after the bite, and was fine. That is not always the case

Two years ago I arrived home to find a dead raccoon on my brick terrace. The county picked it up, and it tested positive for rabies, no surprise. They made me confine my vaccinated dogs for six months, but they could have ordered them destroyed.
I was lucky !!!

Little boys are curious. I remember when I was little and saw a bat crawl into a crack in an old rock chimney. I climbed up and could see it was barely able to fit in the crack. I tried pulling it out and it bit my finger. I was too afraid to tell anyone about my stupidity. I got lucky. Unfortunately this little boy didn´t.

#12, I always describe my second son as the child I never told not to run with scissors. Everyone gets it.

#11, I don´t understand what the father´s past has to do with this story. It´s a tragedy regardless of what the dad may have ever done. And I don´t know how he will ever be able to live with himself. The what-ifs can be killers . . .

A parent’s “past” very often has a lot to do with the quality of the decisions they make for themselves and for their children.

The holding in a bucket of a sick bat, the ridiculous warning to a six year old to not put his hand in the bucket, the very bad decision to not immediately seek medical treatment for his child.

Until we stop giving the drug and drink-impaired a pass, they will continue doing dreadful things like this. The father is 100% to blame.

When I was an adolescent I was scratched and possibly bitten by a wild rabbit that was acting a bit strange. Fortunately, I mentioned this to my mother who immediately drove me to the doctor. It was unlikely but there was still a chance... so I got the shots. They were unpleasant, but the persistent — and perhaps dangerous— myth of how horrible the shots are is greatly exaggerated.

These poor parents will struggle with that choice for forever. How horribly sad.

As to "telling kids not to do stuff", it works really well, but in the opposite direction.

I was picking up a paycheck when I was about 18 for some ditch digging (I have mentioned that I was once poor) at the house of the guy who hired me and a friend to do the work. Two really bratty kids were yelling at us, started throwing sticks as we sat on the porch, tired and hot. After a minute my friend said, "Follow my lead", and walked over to a tabasco pepper plant he spotted nearby that was covered with ripe peppers. We feigned picking and eating them, and the kids said, "Hey, what are you eating.".

We earnestly told them, "Do not eat these, they are bad for you, you will not like them, so DO NOT EAT THEM."

We then sat on the porch. Within 30 seconds they were screaming and crying and running to mommy, mouths burning from tabasco peppers. Mom came out, angry at us. We sincerely told her that we clearly told them not to eat them, that they wouldn´t like them, barely able to contain our smirks. She scowled, and went back in the house, no doubt knowing that her bratty kids had been trapped by their own brattiness.

Very sad to lose the little boy, but his parents are fools, twice over.

Do not underestimate the cost of the healthcare in these parents´ decision. That could have made the parents reluctant to go to the doctor too. Ever since Obamacare, the deductibles are so high, the "insured" still pays for everything up to a ridiculously high deductible. They probably won´t admit it even is that is a factor.

They need to charge that father with manslaughter and lock him up for about ten years and sterilized lest he breed more of his kind.
Consider: he picked up an obviously sick bat--bats are the biggest carrier of rabies currently. He kept the bat and exposed it to his family. He failed to immediately take his child for treatment after he had contact. He even failed to consult with a doctor or nurse; they would have demanded he get the child treated. He was cognizant of the dangers; he had gone online for information and ignored it.

For what it´s worth, the so called Milwaukee Protocol doesn´t appear to work, most of the patients who survived had undergone partial treatment before developing the symptoms.

The reported shortage of vaccine is terrifying.
