How Conservatives Are Being Destroyed

Today, as you read this, my website Right Wing News is shutting down operations. It has been around since 2001, but became massive a few years ago because of Facebook. Remember the mainstream media liberals going out of their minds because the Russians reached almost 150 million people with their $100,000 Facebook ad buy? In July of 2015, in just a week, the Right Wing News Facebook page reached 133 million people. Because conservatives were sharing content they were interested in, little ol’ Right Wing News (well, I guess nearly 3.6 million Facebook likes isn’t so little) was driving the same

Wait a second, I´m confused!
I don´t want to make your wedding cake because I don´t believe in gay marriage... lawsuit!
I don´t want to perform your marriage ceremony because I don´t believe in gay weddings... lawsuit!
You can´t force me to serve alcohol or pork because I´m muslim... lawsuit!
I don´t have to print your conservative viewpoint because I don´t agree with it...

Just like Fox News stepped in and found the conservative audience, there´s an opportunity for a conservative to take the plunge.

Are we going to be consistent?

We believe that a private business has the absolute right to refuse to bake a cake for a homosexual "wedding." When said baker prevails in court, we consider it a victory for freedom and liberty.

So--shouldn´t Facebook and Twitter have the same rights?

I agree with #7, private businesses should be free to discriminate. However, they should not be allowed to do it stealthily-they need to disclose their policies up front and allow people to consider other options. By spiking conservative content/posts, they are going beyond simple discrimination. Akin to a baker agreeing to make a cake for a gay wedding than not going forward with it and claiming philosophical differences later.

When liberals railed against Big Anything over the years, they broke it up or sued them into submission; conservatives have access to the same game plan, and have anti-trust lawyers at their disposal.

I´m sorry the author lost business, but if he was relying on Facebook he made a poor bet. It was only a matter of time before they´d cut him and others loose. I don´t frequent Facebook, but I understand they now pepper non-conforming articles with editorial notices urging readers to visit conforming so-called fact-check sites.

Facebook, google, twitter, you tube (owned by google) have always been left wing. What´s new? On facebook, you can block the news sites you don´t want, that was about 99% for me. The other 1% will probably be gone soon. Conservatives need to work & get some conservative social media sites. They definitely would have the audience. ... But on the other hand it´s probably a good idea to stay on these sites it drives the left bonkers. Driving the conservatives away is probably their goal.

The thing that Facebook has offered has been a digital town square where different ideas and perspectives could be found and discussed. They are taking that away. It´s hard to imagine that there isn´t someone out there that could recreate a Facebook-like site that would be open to differing views. The same thing goes for Twitter and YouTube. Google is a search engine; there are any number of alternatives to use.

As longtime patrons of SteynOnline well know, every so often I´m minded, after the latest Absurdity of the Day, to caution that "sometimes a society becomes too stupid to survive". I’ve been looking at the insanity of the Democrats and self-styled progressives (there is so much of it on display) from the signs in front yards proclaiming they believe in science – as though science necessitated belief – to the signs in expensive neighborhoods proclaiming that they welcome illegals as their neighbors. (Snip) I’ve heard women proclaim they’re marching for lost rights, though no one can answer me on what rights they lost. Oh, yeah, I’ve also been informed, loudly, in public spaces, that liberals are afraid to speak their mind and that the awful dictator, Trump, has chilled their speech.

Federal portraits often aren´t that great. There´s plenty of evidence of that all around Washington D.C. And famous people are surprisingly hard to paint. There are plenty of strikingly different portraits of George Washington. So the normal response to the Obama portraits would be a shrug, and maybe a few jokes if you don´t like them. And maybe even if you do. But the Obamas are the center of the most delusional cult of personality that the media has yet spawned. And so we get bizarre pieces like these. Free-marketers are right that tax cuts stimulate economic growth that in turn lead to expanding production and eventually more federal tax revenue. But the problem traditionally has been that to obtain tax reductions, Republicans also have had to sign on reluctantly to larger expenditures. Or, worse, they willingly believed they could spend more, simply because more money poured into the federal treasuries. George W. Bush doubled the national debt. After running against Bush profligacy (remember the Chinese credit card trope), Barack Obama doubled it again by doubling Bush’s levels of borrowing. Conservatives blasted Obama for his even greater lack of thrift. The

I couldn´t take much more of the news. The miscreants reportedly involved in the illegal surveillance of the Trump campaign were fleeing the FBI; parties in the intelligence agencies were contradicting one another with sloppily conceived alibis. On top of that, the agencies involved looked both more stupid and more partisan than ever. The latest was the New York Times account of how the CIA paid Russians a $100,000 down payment on a million-dollar contract to tar the President (doubtless with disinformation). The viewing of the promised "compromising video" was – get this – in a room in the Russian

Well, the memo was released. You can read it in full here, and I recommend you do so because, on the evidence of much of Friday´s TV and radio coverage, most commentators only want to talk about it in the most shallow political terms. Whereas the questions it raises about state corruption in an age of round-the-clock technological surveillance are far more profound. Let´s start with something I wrote back in October: It seems a reasonable inference, to put it as blandly as possible, that the [Christopher Steele] dossier was used to justify the opening of what the Feds call an "FI" (Full Investigation), which in turn was used

In The Meaning of Conservatism and several other books, the English philosopher Roger Scruton argues for the importance of the first-person plural—the “We” that binds us together as a community, a people, a nation. Tuesday night, in his magnificent State of the Union Address, Donald Trump did something similar. Trump’s speech was full of memorable lines: the “new American moment,” “Americans are Dreamers, too,” “complacency and concessions only invite aggression and provocation.” But perhaps the most memorable line, playing off the president’s campaign slogan, came at the end: “It is the people who are making America great again.” Any dispassionate observer has
