Tonya Harding is no hero
New York Post, by Maureen Callahan

It’s hard to recall a second act in American life like Tonya Harding’s. She doesn’t deserve it. As recently as 2014 — the 20th anniversary of her Olympic rival Nancy Kerrigan’s kneecapping, carried out by Harding’s ex-husband and associates — the disgraced skater told TV Guide, “Whatever. It’s like, I’m done. Nobody wants to hear this crap anymore.” Fast-forward nearly four years, and this scandal has been retold — marketed, untruthfully, as a “true story” — in the Oscar-gunning film “I, Tonya.” Last Sunday, Harding was seated prominently at the Golden Globes, thanked by winner Allison Janney — who portrayed Harding’s mother LaVona

This is a little complicated. Yes, and most importantly, Tonya Harding was guilty, period. She was also abused, from a dirt poor family, her mother totally used her, her husband was just as awful, and awful in the same way. But somehow, Tonya Harding became one of the greatest female figure skaters America has ever produced. Or at least that´s what Dick Button (remember him?) said during the months long investigation following the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. A neighbor who was a competitive figure skater mentioned and agreed with Button´s opinion, something about edges and the Tripe Axle. And somehow, at least it´s a story worth telling, not glamorizing, but telling.

I have new respect for Johnny Weir: “I am so over the glamorization of a villain simply because she was born on the ‘wrong side of the tracks.’ While her upbringing may have been tragic, athletes come from all walks of life and succeed based on merit, not assault. I won’t applaud her and I stand for Nancy.”

The other victim here is Michelle Kwan. She was the alternate who would have replaced Harding if the Multnomah County DA would have had the guts to do his job and not let her lawyer bluff him. Because after the Olympics were over, he sure did his job surprisingly fast. So you knew the evidence was there. He was just spineless.

She was the biggest embarrassment I have ever witnessed at the Olympics. EVER Saw a photo of her with the article, and she looks so hard. Not a drop of class or graciousness in her soul.

#7 - All the athletic abilities and skill in the world means nothing if it is not backed up by character. No matter how poor you are that´s something that doesn´t cost a damn dime! Plenty of people have grown up dirt poor with character and morals. That´s not an excuse.

I was invited by friends to attend the performance one day after the attack, in Detroit. So I got to see Miss Tonya in person. She was awful. Took her at least 10 minutes to start her routine - the lights weren´t right, the laces on her skates weren[t right, I don´t remember how many false starts she made, but she was not impressive. I think she also fell at least once. It was very weird because we didn´t yet know her role in the attack.

At the same time, one of the friends who had invited me was from a fairly prominent Boston family and she had no love at all for Nancy Kerrigan, who had earned a reputation as a not so nice prima donna.

Still, I love watching figure skating competitions and performances. And wish I could go back to childhood and take skating lessons and learn to fly across the ice as the true athletes do.

I barely recall the incident during the scandals, but I do recall something of it as it was played out in the news, sport news and endless TV dramas.

The one thing I cannot reconcile is that figure skating is an extremely expensive athletic sport from the skates, costuming, cosmetics, hair, rink time, traveling, relocating, coaching, choreography and music, to name a few. How on earth can two supposedly "blue collar" families afford childhood skaters from a very young age to Olympic level? And do not state sponsorship as figure skating is as about lucrative in the sponsorship world as bob sledding, other than a Wheaties cereal box cover.

The poster above who says it´s complicated is right. It´s easy to say character doesn´t cost anything, but abuse can have devastating effects on a person, robbing them of even the chance to develop that character. it doesn´t change the facts, but some sort of thinking has to go into how you formulate your opinion of a person who has been abused, and then did bad things.

She will never be "normal." That is tragic. Also, everybody deserves a shot at redemption and forgiveness. She may not have earned it yet, but everybody deserves the chance.

Guilfoyle will likely join America First Politics, a pro-Trump nonprofit, according to the network. It’s not known when she’s planning on leaving Fox News. Are you tired of all the winning yet? If you are a conservative who has followed the trajectory of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), you might be getting to that point. From its inception, the CFPB has been a big government liberal’s dream: no Congressional oversight, limitless investigative authority, and a leadership succession plan that seemed more feudal than democratic. Indeed, when CFPB Director Richard Cordray resigned in November 2017, the Left claimed he, not President Donald Trump, had the authority to appoint his successor. According to them, Deputy Director Leandra English was Cordray’s rightful heiress. So when the President appointed Mick

BERLIN — Nazi comparisons have become such frequent occurrences almost anywhere in the world that they rarely draw attention these days. But in Adolf Hitler´s birth country, Austria, they usually still strike a nerve whenever they come up. They certainly did so this week, after Jewish organizations criticized the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), the ruling coalition party in the state of Lower Austria, over pursuing a proposal that would require Jews to register with the government if they seek to purchase kosher meat. The same rules would apply to Muslims. “This constitutes an attack on Jewish and Muslim life,” the

"What if we were wrong?" That is the question then-President Barack Obama asked as he rode along in his presidential limousine with his foreign policy guru Ben Rhodes. The question came in the aftermath of the surprise presidential election victory by political newcomer and television reality star Donald Trump. Obama wasn´t only wrong in understanding where the electorate was in 2016 but was frequently wrong throughout his presidency. A sunken Russian warship believed to contain $130 billion in gold bullion and coins has been found off the coast of a South Korean island — 113 years after it was scuttled during the Russo-Japanese War, reports said. A joint team including South Korean, British and Canadian explorers on Sunday found the wreck of the Dmitrii Donskoi more than 1,400 feet below sea level and a mile off the coast of the South Korean island of Ulleungdo, according to CNBC. The Russian Imperial Navy cruiser was carrying about 5,500 boxes of gold bars and coins — weighing some 200 tons — when

Brockton, Mass., is known as the birthplace of boxing legend Rocky Marciano. But with U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren pushing for a $1 billion Native American casino less than 20 miles away, struggling blue-collar Brockton´s competing casino bid might not stand a fighting chance. Brockton Mayor William Carpenter slammed Warren’s bill on behalf of the Masphee Wampanoag tribe, which would override a federal judge´s decision last year to block the tribe’s plan for a luxury gaming resort in East Taunton. He says Warren seems to be acting on behalf of special interests instead of people like Brockton´s struggling residents.
