Corinne Brown asks for prison reprieve

Slated to report to prison Jan. 29, former Congresswoman Corrine Brown is asking a federal appeals court to allow her to remain free while she continues to fight her conviction on charges related to a charity scam. Brown´s attorney, William Mallory Kent, filed a 37-page document Friday at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that seeks to keep her out of prison while an appeal is pending. The request is based on what will be a key issue in the appeal: whether U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan improperly removed a juror who said during deliberations that the "Holy Spirit" told

FTA: Brown, 71, long an influential figure in Jacksonville, represented a congressional district that stretched from Jacksonville to Orlando. She lost a re-election bid in 2016 after the district´s boundaries had been substantially redrawn and as she faced the criminal charges.

From Jacksonville to Orlando? That´s not a short distance, at least a couple of hours at best. The two cities were probably politically connected by a border that was as thin as a single highway, connected to none of the businesses and residences located thereon, only to heavily minority neighborhoods on either end of of the gerrymander.

Twenty years ago Corinne Brown was rated lowest congressional intelligence quotient by some dimly remembered study, tied with either Maxine W or Sheila JL. When one is stupid and basically corrupt, one has to become a huckster, and steal. It´s all one has got. Sayonara, Madame hairpiece. Maybe a grammar school beginning is available on the inside.

I see this on our news all the time. I think she has lived high off the money of Taxpayers for all the years she was in Congress. When she finally was caught, she tried to blame her Chief of Staff or someone else who handled her money! She is guilty as sin and deserves to do her time as an example! Next thing you know she will say she wants the same exemption as Hillary got!

The Tampa Bay Times, one of the largest US newspapers by circulation, plans to lay off around 50 people starting Thursday in a direct response to a new tariff imposed by President Donald Trump´s administration. The Tampa Bay Times confirmed the layoffs to the Tampa Bay Business Journal. In March, Paul Tash, the Times´ chairman and CEO, wrote in the paper that new tariffs on imported newsprint would increase the company´s costs by roughly $3 million a year. "These tariffs will also hurt our employees, because payroll is the only expense that is bigger than newsprint," Tash warned. "To help offset the extra

It’s really not that complicated. But President Trump’s Syria strikes have reopened the debate over what defines his foreign policy. Is he an interventionist or an isolationist? Foreign policy experts claim that he’s making it up as he goes along. But they’re not paying attention. President Trump’s foreign policy has two consistent elements. From threatening Kim Jong-Un on Twitter to moving the embassy to Jerusalem to bombing Syria, he applies pressure and then he disengages. Here’s how that works. First, Trump pressures the most intransigent and hostile side in the conflict. Second, he divests the United States from the conflict leaving the relevant parties to

He described, with a sense of poignant loss, the magnificent edifice that the Deplorables had by inattention let the seeds of nationalism overgrow. But perhaps it not the noise of the jungle that is responsible for the present cacophony. At least some of the frenzy rocking the West stems from the efforts of an ideology trying to hold on to its old dominance. Wounded tigers can be dangerous. What the late Lionel Trilling used to call the liberal imagination was captured by the plight of two black men who went to a Philadelphia Starbucks and didn´t order anything. The company said 8,000 Starbucks stores would close for sensitivity training and the conscience of an anguished world pulsated with guilt and grief over the arrest of the two men, whose only offense was to stand there. The two men were exactly right: The right thing to do in Starbucks is not to order anything, because the coffee is disgusting. Starbucks´ response, to be sure, was incommensurate with the problem: Rather

Washington - Dozens of Democratic U.S. Senators on Wednesday introduced a resolution calling for Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt to resign on allegations of ethics lapses. Those relate to the agency’s purchase of a $43,000 sound booth for his office and spending on travel and security. The resolution was signed by 39 senators in the 100-member Senate, which is controlled by Pruitt’s fellow Republicans. Although Republicans can defeat it, the resolution is symbolically important because it represents the most senators ever to call for a Cabinet member’s ouster in resolution, its sponsors said.
