U.S. airlines American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) and Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) said on Tuesday that they would give their employees a $1,000 bonus in light of the recent U.S. tax bill. The airlines join a host of other companies such as AT&T (T.N), Boeing Co (BA.N) and Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) promising to pay bonuses or invest more in training after the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in 30 years, which cuts the corporate tax rate. American Airlines will distribute the bonus to each team member, excluding officers, at its mainline and wholly owned regional carriers,

New rallying call for 2020
Democrats: ‘Abolish ICE´
Associated Press, by Bill Barrow    Original Article

ATLANTA -- Several prominent Democrats who are mulling a bid for the White House in 2020 sought to bolster their progressive credentials this week by calling for major changes to immigration enforcement, with some pressing for the outright abolition of the federal government´s chief immigration enforcement agency. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, has "become a deportation force." "You should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it and build something that actually works," she told CNN late Thursday. Her comments follow similar sentiments expressed by Sen. Kamala Harris of California over the

Barack Obama broke a months-long public silence on Thursday to offer the Democrat party a dose of tough love at a political fundraiser in Beverly Hills. His bottom line? Stop looking back at his presidency wistfully and get out and vote instead. While he told the Democratic National Committee (DNC) donors present that they are “right to be concerned,” according to Politico, he also warned that any chance of winning back power would be quashed if they continued to focus their energy on him. “The executive summary,” he said, is “Vote. Participate. Get involved.” “Do not wait for the perfect

A Massachusetts newspaper reporter has resigned after falsely suggesting the perpetrator of the deadly shooting at a Maryland newspaper was wearing a President Donald Trump-inspired "Make America Great Again" hat. The Republican newspaper in Springfield reports Conor Berry has apologized for tarnishing the "good work of fair-minded journalists everywhere" in his Friday resignation letter. Berry tweeted an image of the familiar red hat and suggested 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos had dropped a similar one on The Capital Gazette´s newsroom floor before opening fire and killing five people Thursday. The tweet has since been taken down. The Republican´s executive editor Wayne Phaneuf

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York´s 14th congressional district on Tuesday, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season. An activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Ocasio-Cortez won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley -- the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House -- outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin. This was the first time in 14 years a member of his own party has attempted to unseat Crowley, who chairs the Queens County

CNN anchor Jake Tapper pressed Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) on his past ties to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan in a testy interview on Tuesday after Ellison blasted the Supreme Court decision to uphold President Trump´s travel ban. Ellison took exception to Tapper bringing up the issue, and the two also battled when the CNN journalist noted that The Washington Post´s fact checker had given the lawmaker four Pinocchios after he said he had no relations with Farrakhan. "Jake, they were wrong," Ellison said. "It is untrue, Jake, I´m sorry. And I´m disappointed that that is why you called

The Supreme Court upheld President Donald Trump’s travel ban Tuesday, siding with the president in Trump v. Hawaii. The 5-4 decision legally allows vast immigration restriction from several majority-Muslim nations: Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen. While the court’s opinion stated the president had “sufficient national security justification” to order the travel ban, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg issued a scorching dissent calling attention to Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric on the campaign road. “The United States of America is a Nation built upon the promise of religious liberty,” they wrote.”Our Founders honored that core promise by

The post-2016 trench warfare between the liberal and establishment wings of the Democratic Party flares up again in Maryland on Tuesday, when voters pick the party’s standard-bearer to take on popular Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican. Former NAACP leader Ben Jealous, one of the front-runners in recent polls, is campaigning on a Bernard Sanders-style platform of universal health care, free college tuition and marijuana legalization, saying the Democratic base in one of the nation’s most liberal states is ready to embrace “bold ideas” to propel him into the governor’s mansion. A federal judge Monday tossed out two groundbreaking lawsuits by San Francisco and Oakland that sought to hold some of the world’s largest oil companies liable for climate change. In an exhaustive, 16-page ruling that touched on such scientific matters as the ice age and early observations of carbon dioxide, U.S. District Judge William Alsup acknowledged the problem of a warming planet but said it is just too big for the courts to solve. The cities are trying to get five oil and gas giants, including Bay Area-based Chevron, to help cover the costs of dealing with sea-level rise, like

A new poll from Gallup finds those surveyed give President Trump high ratings on his intelligence but lower ones for his ability to work with both sides of the political aisle. Fifty-eight percent of Americans surveyed said they would characterize Trump as intelligent, the Gallup poll found, while 40 percent said they would not characterize him as intelligence. Gallup said it has not posed the question on intelligence to U.S. voters frequently enough with past presidents to give enough historical context. However, the polling giant asked a similar question in the 1990s, regarding former Presidents Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

Democratic Senator and potential 2020 presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand has called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be abolished. The far-left position has gained popularity on the fringes of the Democratic Party as the immigration debate heats up in the country. Gillibrand joins New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio who said Friday “ICE’s time has come and gone. We should abolish ICE. We should create something better, something different.” However, when Gillibrand was just elected to a rather conservative House seat in Upstate New York, she was singing a different tune on illegal immigration.
