B-CR-TEO
Because character counts, I am a
conservative who cannot support Trump

New York Times News Service, by Bret Stephens

Original Article

Posted By:Maggie2u, 1/2/2018 3:50:55 PM

Tax cuts. Deregulation. More for the military; less for the United Nations. The Islamic State crushed in its heartland. Assad hit with cruise missiles. Troops to Afghanistan. Arms for Ukraine. A tougher approach to North Korea. Jerusalem recognized as Israel’s capital. The Iran deal decertified. Title IX kangaroo courts on campus condemned. Yes to Keystone. No to Paris. Wall Street roaring and consumer confidence high. And, of course, Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. What, for a conservative, is there to dislike about this policy record

Actually, I admire Trump despite rumors of his "lying, narcissism, bullying, bigotry, crassness, name calling, ignorance, paranoia, incompetence and pettiness" most of which are minor, irrelevant or highly effective in moving the agenda.

True gentlemen should not go into politics. They have a tough time winning votes, and if elected, they get nothing done.

I prefer this conservative gritty fighter -- warts and all.

I guess Bret wants to keep his job at the New York Times. Or maybe he liked Hillary´s "character." What exactly is he objecting to? Using Twitter is not a mark of bad character. Neither is holding big rallies. I think it more of a "not our kind" thing. Queens accent, self-promoter, the opposite of circumspect. The Bushes were taught never to brag. That is what Bret and the other Trumpers expect of their politicians, the majority of whom can´t win the big election.

He is NOT a conservative. He is a tame pet of the NYT who pretends to be a conservative but really does exactly what his Communist bosses tell him to do to best advance the Commie line that the NYT has been pushing since the 1930s.

How can you claim that character counts and that Clinton would be a better choice given the mountain of illegal, despicable, and disgusting baggage she carries behind her. Think Vince Foster. Think the Trump Dossier. Think her unbelievably outrageous lie that she didn´t know what "wiping a server" meant. Think Benghazi. Think cheating Bernie Sanders out of the primary. This is a woman who outright lies and cheats to get her way. And her way, is power over all of us little people on the slow march to socialism. As a staunch and completely clear minded conservative, I disavow you, Bret Stevens. Go join the democrats who you obviously prefer to bow in front of. You are the problem, Bret. You and every republican presidential candidate since Reagan is the EXACT PROBLEM. Character does matter Bret, just not the way you think it does. This isn´t 1950, watching Eisenhower on TV extoll American values. Humans are complicated, all of us are. Your "character" argument only serves to prop up republicans who are of the utmost virtue and show no apparent vices. Guess what, we had that candidate. Romney. He lost miserably. To a candidate with better character? No, a swindling socialist hell bent on indoctrinating all federal workers into mindless little liberal drones that target conservatives like us behind the scenes in the hopes of gaining more power and money. They got away with it by way of the liberal media, of which you are a part. Given your pathetic, naive, and dangerous view of "character" perhaps it is we who should be questioning yours. Vote democrat, Bret. It´s obviously what you do best, and want to do anyways. No conservative with "character" would ever vote for the awful Hillary Clinton.

You can take your "character" and wander in the woods with Hillary, Bret. Maybe you´ll run into Neville Chamberlain wandering around in there too.

We are in a WAR for the soul of this country and playing by the nicey, nice rules mean that we will LOSE. We know that places that follow the paths to liberalism end up being Hell on earth. Nope, I don´t want my kids living in that type of country. I´m not afraid of a little dirty work to make things work out the right way.

And BTW, character? Trump has been under a microscope and under attack for a year and a half and his opponents have almost NOTHING on him. He stands up for what he believes in. THAT is what you call bullying? You´re an idiot, Bret.

Stevens may think he´s a conservative, but what he is is a shallow conviction-less hypocrite or he´s just lying to himself. He is what may pass for a conservative in seattle. If character really counted for anything, he wouldnt be supporting hillary, the most dishonest incompetent unaccomplished misogynistic rapist enabling greedy excuse for a political candidate to ever run.

We had a choice in 2016. Trump versus the Arkansas Tarantula. It was a no-brainer for any voter on the right side of the political spectrum. I actually voted for Ben Carson in the primary. A nice man but I see now the media and the left would have eaten him alive.

Trump may be brash and uncouth but I am reminded about what Lincoln said about Grant, "He fights". Trump fights and he has blind-sided the Dems and their running dog media.

I want to say it was Bret Stephens that wrote the WSJ Editorial that called the Tea Party the ´Blood and Soil´ Republicans - reference to the Nazis in the 1930s. Joel Pollack wrote about it on 3 July 2013, but haven´t been able to dig up the WSJ copy, nor Pollacks. But Brett is definitely a globalist and open borders booster.

(it was actually a bit more colorful than that, but you get the point, I hope).

There is a difference, a huge difference, between character and gentleman. Yes, once can have both. The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe. It is possible to have character and not be gentleman. Then its possible to have poor charater and not be a gentleman. Examples would be Bill Clinton, Al Franken, and just about any Democrat. Seems Trump has been true to his word and uncompromising in his vision and mission. He has character. And its certainly possible to have character and not be a gentleman. What Bret is upset over is he isn´t a gentleman. Trump needs to slap on a seersucker suit and bow tie. Maybe that will fix it for Bret.

Find it interesting that Bret Stevens quotes liberal Daniel Patrick Moynihan to define Conservatism. Culture, not politics, determines the success of a society? How would Moynihan define culture? If its anything like the way today´s liberals do, its all wrong. Does Bret Stevens define culture like most other Conservatives? One has to wonder.

Bret jumps ugly all over Trump´s character, but gives a pass to Hillary and all the other candidates. That´s where Bret goes wrong again. Trump had better character than Hillary, Bernie, and most of the Republican candidates. Its one of the reasons Trump won. It is surprising that Bret Stevens missed this. One has to ask what else is motivating Bret Stevens in attacking Trump.

Watching how the media has behaved over the last decade (and longer), no journalist gets an automatic pass when it comes to credibility. That includes Bret Stevens.

For Mr. Stephens´ information, I didn´t vote for Trump because of his demeanor, his personality, his wealth, or any characteristic of his that didn´t necessarily appeal to me. It was because of the goals he set for America if he were to become president. And....the alternative to him was a ´corrupt to the core´, lying, arrogant, power and money-hungry grifter. I question the sanity and patriotism of anyone who knew the true character of Clinton, and voted for her anyway - as many did just because she was a Democrat.

I´m thankful every day America dodged ´the MOAB´ when the Democrats´ stranglehold on our system of government was at least loosened. They are an overwhelmingly corrupt and autocratic party at this point. It´s obvious they want total control over us because ´they know best´ and demand we believe, speak and do as they say.....period!

what i know about Trump´s character is he is defending the vulnerable against everyone, including thinking ahead realistically on behalf of African-American teenagers and DACA. And what i know about Stephens´s character is, he has been dragging at Trump´s ankles the whole time. On character, Trump wins.

Sorry, Bret, but Jesus or Gandhi aren´t coming back to run as Republican candidates (though they clearly would over running as Demon-RATs)!!!!!

Nice people make terrible leaders. You need someone with some backbone, who is willing to play as down and dirty as necessary, to be a true leader and fight against the evil of this world (muslims, LIE-berals, Socialists, Demon-RATs, feminazis, etc)

I didn´t vote for Trump for pope. I voted for him for president, and, so far, I believe he has done a pretty darn good job!!! He has definitely done about 1,000,000,000,000 times better of a job than the Hilldebeast would have done!!!

So take your holier-than-thou attitude and shove it where the sun don´t shine!!! We have to deal with reality here, and the nice candidate you are describing would be eaten alive by the Demon-RATs today. And we would all suffer the consequences!!!!!

WHITE SWAN Wa. -- A man in White Swan has recovered a stolen American Flag that belonged to his son who was killed in Afghanistan. After months of searching for the flag, Shawn Marceau says he was visiting his son Marine Lance Cpl. Joe Jackson’s grave on Tuesday when he noticed a flag folded on his son’s grave. “I walked up and I unfolded it you know because it was folded a little bit weird so I wanted to refold it tighter and when I opened it up I saw Josh’s name on there," said Marceau. Marceau says when he saw his son’s

The manager of a popular Vancouver, B.C., restaurant has been fired for refusing service to a supporter of President Trump. The customer arrived at the Teahouse in Stanley Park wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat, and was asked by manager Darin Hodge to remove the lat. Soon after that, the manager, on the job for 18 months, was let go by the Sequoia Co. which manages the restaurant, for violating its "philosophy of tolerance." "Sequoia does not support intolerance of any kind, and it is because of these principles that we cannot discriminate against someone based on their support for the current

Rep. Jayapal was fined $50 after her arrest at the protest, at a Senate office building, of the Trump administration´s border crackdown. U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Seattle, was arrested Thursday with hundreds of other women at a Capitol Hill protest of the Trump administration’s border and immigration policies. Jayapal said she’d been asked to speak at a demonstration by women at the Hart Senate Office Building. The civil disobedience was a reaction to the Trump administration’s crackdown at the U.S.-Mexico border, including separation of thousands of children from their parents in recent months. Many of the demonstrators decided to refuse orders to

Jose Robles was supposed to be on a plane back to Michoacan, Mexico, at 6 a.m. Thursday, but he packed his bags and went to Gethsemane Lutheran Church in downtown Seattle instead. He said he felt fear and anxiety driving to the church for sanctuary to avoid deportation. Churches are considered “sensitive locations” by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which means they are generally not allowed to conduct enforcement operations there. Robles was referred to Gethsemane Lutheran Church by The Church Council of Greater Seattle, which is connected to more than 300 religious congregations. A five-month-old found in a homeless encampment late last month was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services after Seattle Police Department learned methamphetamine use was reportedly occurring in the tent where the child lived. Police were alerted to the infant’s situation on May 30 by another person in the encampment, at the 900 block of Poplar Place South just north of the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and I-90, according to a blog post from the SPD. The child was examined and taken to Seattle Children’s hospital before being turned over to CPS.

OAKVILLE, Grays Harbor County — As he heard the gunshots from the back of the Tumwater Walmart, David George wondered if his family was safe. And then the training kicked in. George isn’t just the pastor of the Oakville Assembly of God Church. He describes himself as a trained EMT with the town’s fire department, a certified gun-range safety officer and a licensed concealed-carry holder who has trained for active shooter situations. George is the man who has been called a hero for using the gun he carries to stop the bizarre and deadly rampage of carjackings and shootings by McCleary resident Tim

Seattle, citing safety concerns, is set to move two historic boat guns from one of its war memorials to Chehalis. It’s a decision that has angered at least one veteran who spent more than a decade with the city providing services to his comrades. The city on Tuesday will relocate two cannon-like weapons that were aboard the USS Concord during the Spanish-American War of 1898 from the War Garden in Woodland Park to the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, according to Chip Duncan, the museum’s executive director. It’s the culmination of an effort that started about two years ago, when

As President Donald Trump prepares to meet Kim Jong Un of North Korea to negotiate denuclearization, a challenge that has bedeviled the world for years, he is doing so without the help of a White House science adviser or senior counselor trained in nuclear physics. Trump is the first president since 1941 not to name a science adviser, a position created during World War II to guide the Oval Office on technical matters ranging from nuclear warfare to global pandemics. As a businessman and president, Trump has proudly been guided by his instincts. Nevertheless, people who have participated in past nuclear

THE MAGIC MICROSCOPIC particles that might change the world — and in the process, permanently burnish Seattle’s spot on the big, ascent-of-man scientific map — are, at this very moment, being carted about on a medical campus one short traffic jam away from the shores of Lake Union. Lest you believed Seattle’s head-tax debate was not already hot enough, a union-backed activist group says Amazon should be charged with a crime for its threat to roll back job growth if the Seattle City Council imposes the controversial tax aimed at helping homeless people. The group, Working Washington, is asking Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson to charge Amazon with a Class B felony: “intimidating a public servant,” citing the company’s move to pause some construction and leasing in the city pending the outcome of the vote on the so-called “head tax.” In an open letter to Ferguson on

Five major oil companies for years deliberatively sought to downplay and discredit scientific warnings about the risks of global warming, alleges a lawsuit filed Wednesday by King County. The Superior Court lawsuit names BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell as defendants, and seeks financial compensation to help pay for the costs of coping with sea-level rise, extreme weather and other effects of climate change. The lawsuit faults the oil companies for intentionally producing and marketing massive quantities of fossil fuels

Whoopi Goldberg exploded on Judge Jeanine Pirro in a fiery on-air debate about president Donald Trump on Thursday´s episode of The View. Towards the end of the show, Pirro praised Trump with lowering the unemployment rate for the first time in 50 years for ´minorities, Hispanics and African Americans´ but Goldberg and fellow The View co-host Sunny Hostin said the credit should be given to former president Barack Obama. The Trump-Helsinki summit brought new accusations in Congress Thursday, as GOP Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona accused the president of providing ´aid and comfort´ to the enemy. Flake´s choice of words evoked the Constitution´s definition of treason – at a time when President Trump is facing a new level of scrutiny for his refusal to forcefully condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for election meddling during their summit meeting Monday in Finland. ´By choosing to reject objective reality in Helsinki, the president let down the free world by giving aid and comfort to an enemy of democracy. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Three-year-old twins Zyler and Kadyn Sharpe scurried around the boys and girls clothing racks of a narrow consignment store filled with toys. Zyler, wearing rainbow leggings, scrutinized a pair of hot-pink-and-purple sneakers. Kadyn, in a T-Rex shirt, fixated on a musical cube that flashed colorful lights. At a glance, the only discernible difference between these fraternal twins is their hair — Zyler’s is brown and Kadyn’s is blond. Is Zyler a boy or a girl? How about Kadyn? That’s a question their parents, Nate and Julia Sharpe, say only the twins can decide. The Cambridge, Mass., couple

President Trump’s longtime lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, secretly recorded a conversation with Mr. Trump two months before the presidential election in which they discussed payments to a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump, according to lawyers and others familiar with the recording. The F.B.I. seized the recording this year during a raid on Mr. Cohen’s office. The Justice Department is investigating Mr. Cohen’s involvement in paying women to tamp down embarrassing news stories about Mr. Trump ahead of the 2016 election. Prosecutors want to know whether that violated federal campaign finance laws, and any

Since her surprise primary victory over 10-term Congressman Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th District, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been promoted by the media as the prototype of a new generation of young progressives destined to replace the leadership of the Democratic Party. Unfortunately for her media boosters, however, she keeps blowing her lines. It’s not just her rote advocacy of single-payer healthcare and guaranteed government jobs, or even that she backs wacky ideas like abolishing ICE and occupying airports — Ocasio-Cortez is genuinely clueless. She outed herself, in several recent interviews, as functionally illiterate in economics, international relations, and history.

Rep. Maxine Waters warned supporters on Wednesday of potential "armed protests" against her after an extremist group called for ongoing demonstrations outside her office in Los Angeles. In a lengthy statement issued late Wednesday, Waters, D-Calif., said she’d been notified about forthcoming protests by the Oath Keepers, which she described as "an anti-government militia" that´s staged armed protests in cities across the country. She warned her supporters against being "baited" into counter-demonstrations or confrontations with the organization, which she said has a track record of "violent and provocative behavior." Email Scandal: Last week we learned that a "foreign entity" may have been secretly receiving Hillary Clinton´s emails while she was Secretary of State, including many that contained classified information. And that the FBI apparently ignored this information during its "investigation." The reaction by the press to this bombshell? Crickets. At one point during Peter Strzok´s congressional testimony last week, Rep. Louie Gohmert made a stunning claim: FBI investigators were told that Clinton´s emails had been surreptitiously forwarded to a "foreign entity." And the FBI investigators who were allegedly conducting a thorough, unbiased, professional probe into Clinton´s

Beating your wife is worse than protesting during the national anthem. So, too, is sexually assaulting a woman. While that might seem obvious, it needs to be clarified given The Associated Press´ report Thursday that the Miami Dolphins are now including protesting during the anthem on their list of "conduct detrimental to the club." Under NFL rules, that´s an offense punishable by a suspension of up to four games. The Dolphins later told the AP that "all options are still open." But to give you an idea of how heinous at least one NFL team sees trying to draw attention to racial and economic inequality, a four-game suspension is

Avenatti, a lawyer who has become a household name — or at least has sought to become one — with his media appearances representing adult-film star Stormy Daniels, says he’s “giving serious thought” to running for president. He says he’s skeptical that the politicians now seen as likely contenders in the 2020 presidential race can beat President Trump. The Democratic Party needs “a street fighter … someone that can give as good as they take,” he said. “Let us remember that

Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, the reported FBI lovebirds, are the poster children for the next “Don’t Text and Investigate” public service ads airing soon at an FBI office near you. Their extraordinary texting affair on their government phones has given the FBI a black eye, laying bare a raw political bias brought into the workplace that agents are supposed to check at the door when they strap on their guns and badges. It is no longer in dispute that they held animus for Donald Trump, who was a subject of their Russia probe, or that they openly discussed using the powers
