B-CR-TEO
Because character counts, I am a
conservative who cannot support Trump

New York Times News Service, by Bret Stephens

Original Article

Posted By:Maggie2u, 1/2/2018 3:50:55 PM

Tax cuts. Deregulation. More for the military; less for the United Nations. The Islamic State crushed in its heartland. Assad hit with cruise missiles. Troops to Afghanistan. Arms for Ukraine. A tougher approach to North Korea. Jerusalem recognized as Israel’s capital. The Iran deal decertified. Title IX kangaroo courts on campus condemned. Yes to Keystone. No to Paris. Wall Street roaring and consumer confidence high. And, of course, Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. What, for a conservative, is there to dislike about this policy record

Actually, I admire Trump despite rumors of his "lying, narcissism, bullying, bigotry, crassness, name calling, ignorance, paranoia, incompetence and pettiness" most of which are minor, irrelevant or highly effective in moving the agenda.

True gentlemen should not go into politics. They have a tough time winning votes, and if elected, they get nothing done.

I prefer this conservative gritty fighter -- warts and all.

I guess Bret wants to keep his job at the New York Times. Or maybe he liked Hillary´s "character." What exactly is he objecting to? Using Twitter is not a mark of bad character. Neither is holding big rallies. I think it more of a "not our kind" thing. Queens accent, self-promoter, the opposite of circumspect. The Bushes were taught never to brag. That is what Bret and the other Trumpers expect of their politicians, the majority of whom can´t win the big election.

He is NOT a conservative. He is a tame pet of the NYT who pretends to be a conservative but really does exactly what his Communist bosses tell him to do to best advance the Commie line that the NYT has been pushing since the 1930s.

I just can´t take Bret Stevens seriously. Go sell that somewhere else.

How can you claim that character counts and that Clinton would be a better choice given the mountain of illegal, despicable, and disgusting baggage she carries behind her. Think Vince Foster. Think the Trump Dossier. Think her unbelievably outrageous lie that she didn´t know what "wiping a server" meant. Think Benghazi. Think cheating Bernie Sanders out of the primary. This is a woman who outright lies and cheats to get her way. And her way, is power over all of us little people on the slow march to socialism. As a staunch and completely clear minded conservative, I disavow you, Bret Stevens. Go join the democrats who you obviously prefer to bow in front of. You are the problem, Bret. You and every republican presidential candidate since Reagan is the EXACT PROBLEM. Character does matter Bret, just not the way you think it does. This isn´t 1950, watching Eisenhower on TV extoll American values. Humans are complicated, all of us are. Your "character" argument only serves to prop up republicans who are of the utmost virtue and show no apparent vices. Guess what, we had that candidate. Romney. He lost miserably. To a candidate with better character? No, a swindling socialist hell bent on indoctrinating all federal workers into mindless little liberal drones that target conservatives like us behind the scenes in the hopes of gaining more power and money. They got away with it by way of the liberal media, of which you are a part. Given your pathetic, naive, and dangerous view of "character" perhaps it is we who should be questioning yours. Vote democrat, Bret. It´s obviously what you do best, and want to do anyways. No conservative with "character" would ever vote for the awful Hillary Clinton.

You can take your "character" and wander in the woods with Hillary, Bret. Maybe you´ll run into Neville Chamberlain wandering around in there too.

We are in a WAR for the soul of this country and playing by the nicey, nice rules mean that we will LOSE. We know that places that follow the paths to liberalism end up being Hell on earth. Nope, I don´t want my kids living in that type of country. I´m not afraid of a little dirty work to make things work out the right way.

And BTW, character? Trump has been under a microscope and under attack for a year and a half and his opponents have almost NOTHING on him. He stands up for what he believes in. THAT is what you call bullying? You´re an idiot, Bret.

Stevens may think he´s a conservative, but what he is is a shallow conviction-less hypocrite or he´s just lying to himself. He is what may pass for a conservative in seattle. If character really counted for anything, he wouldnt be supporting hillary, the most dishonest incompetent unaccomplished misogynistic rapist enabling greedy excuse for a political candidate to ever run.

We had a choice in 2016. Trump versus the Arkansas Tarantula. It was a no-brainer for any voter on the right side of the political spectrum. I actually voted for Ben Carson in the primary. A nice man but I see now the media and the left would have eaten him alive.

Trump may be brash and uncouth but I am reminded about what Lincoln said about Grant, "He fights". Trump fights and he has blind-sided the Dems and their running dog media.

I want to say it was Bret Stephens that wrote the WSJ Editorial that called the Tea Party the ´Blood and Soil´ Republicans - reference to the Nazis in the 1930s. Joel Pollack wrote about it on 3 July 2013, but haven´t been able to dig up the WSJ copy, nor Pollacks. But Brett is definitely a globalist and open borders booster.

There is a difference, a huge difference, between character and gentleman. Yes, once can have both. The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe. It is possible to have character and not be gentleman. Then its possible to have poor charater and not be a gentleman. Examples would be Bill Clinton, Al Franken, and just about any Democrat. Seems Trump has been true to his word and uncompromising in his vision and mission. He has character. And its certainly possible to have character and not be a gentleman. What Bret is upset over is he isn´t a gentleman. Trump needs to slap on a seersucker suit and bow tie. Maybe that will fix it for Bret.

Find it interesting that Bret Stevens quotes liberal Daniel Patrick Moynihan to define Conservatism. Culture, not politics, determines the success of a society? How would Moynihan define culture? If its anything like the way today´s liberals do, its all wrong. Does Bret Stevens define culture like most other Conservatives? One has to wonder.

Bret jumps ugly all over Trump´s character, but gives a pass to Hillary and all the other candidates. That´s where Bret goes wrong again. Trump had better character than Hillary, Bernie, and most of the Republican candidates. Its one of the reasons Trump won. It is surprising that Bret Stevens missed this. One has to ask what else is motivating Bret Stevens in attacking Trump.

Watching how the media has behaved over the last decade (and longer), no journalist gets an automatic pass when it comes to credibility. That includes Bret Stevens.

For Mr. Stephens´ information, I didn´t vote for Trump because of his demeanor, his personality, his wealth, or any characteristic of his that didn´t necessarily appeal to me. It was because of the goals he set for America if he were to become president. And....the alternative to him was a ´corrupt to the core´, lying, arrogant, power and money-hungry grifter. I question the sanity and patriotism of anyone who knew the true character of Clinton, and voted for her anyway - as many did just because she was a Democrat.

I´m thankful every day America dodged ´the MOAB´ when the Democrats´ stranglehold on our system of government was at least loosened. They are an overwhelmingly corrupt and autocratic party at this point. It´s obvious they want total control over us because ´they know best´ and demand we believe, speak and do as they say.....period!

what i know about Trump´s character is he is defending the vulnerable against everyone, including thinking ahead realistically on behalf of African-American teenagers and DACA. And what i know about Stephens´s character is, he has been dragging at Trump´s ankles the whole time. On character, Trump wins.

Sorry, Bret, but Jesus or Gandhi aren´t coming back to run as Republican candidates (though they clearly would over running as Demon-RATs)!!!!!

Nice people make terrible leaders. You need someone with some backbone, who is willing to play as down and dirty as necessary, to be a true leader and fight against the evil of this world (muslims, LIE-berals, Socialists, Demon-RATs, feminazis, etc)

I didn´t vote for Trump for pope. I voted for him for president, and, so far, I believe he has done a pretty darn good job!!! He has definitely done about 1,000,000,000,000 times better of a job than the Hilldebeast would have done!!!

So take your holier-than-thou attitude and shove it where the sun don´t shine!!! We have to deal with reality here, and the nice candidate you are describing would be eaten alive by the Demon-RATs today. And we would all suffer the consequences!!!!!

THE MAGIC MICROSCOPIC particles that might change the world — and in the process, permanently burnish Seattle’s spot on the big, ascent-of-man scientific map — are, at this very moment, being carted about on a medical campus one short traffic jam away from the shores of Lake Union. Their mode of transport: a thermo-molded plastic lunch cooler, of the sort one might nab at Walmart to carry a baloney sandwich and some freshly cured herring out for a day of salmon fishing on Puget Sound. The little coolers are ubiquitous at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, which four decades ago

Lest you believed Seattle’s head-tax debate was not already hot enough, a union-backed activist group says Amazon should be charged with a crime for its threat to roll back job growth if the Seattle City Council imposes the controversial tax aimed at helping homeless people. The group, Working Washington, is asking Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson to charge Amazon with a Class B felony: “intimidating a public servant,” citing the company’s move to pause some construction and leasing in the city pending the outcome of the vote on the so-called “head tax.” In an open letter to Ferguson on

Five major oil companies for years deliberatively sought to downplay and discredit scientific warnings about the risks of global warming, alleges a lawsuit filed Wednesday by King County. The Superior Court lawsuit names BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell as defendants, and seeks financial compensation to help pay for the costs of coping with sea-level rise, extreme weather and other effects of climate change. The lawsuit faults the oil companies for intentionally producing and marketing massive quantities of fossil fuels

NEW YORK — For 108 years, the Boy Scouts of America´s flagship program has been known simply as the Boy Scouts. With girls soon entering the ranks, the group says that iconic name will change. The organization on Wednesday announced a new name for its Boy Scouts program: Scouts BSA. The change will take effect next February. Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh said many possibilities were considered during lengthy and "incredibly fun" deliberations before the new name was chosen. "We wanted to land on something that evokes the past but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward," he said. "We´re

The Seattle City Hall´s resident socialist, City Council member Kshama Sawant, has reprimanded Women´s March organizers for delivering a brief Twitter tribute to America´s former first lady Barbara Bush. After Bush, 92, died at home Tuesday evening, the official Women´s March account tweeted: "Rest in peace and power, Barbara Bush." Sawant was quick to give Women´s March bad Marx for its ideologically incorrect tribute. "This is terrible," Sawant tweeted. "@womensmarch organizers have helped lead historic protests since Trump´s election, but this tweet shows how even without a political compass, even well-meaning progressives can end up giving cover to ruling class and ultimately undermining

He was a risky proposition from the start. But that was precisely why prosecutors were interested in Diego Carballo-Oliveros. The 16-year-old had been charged with two robberies, appeared capable of considerable violence and faced the possibility of years locked in a juvenile jail. With stakes that high, Carballo-Oliveros could have been the ideal test case, the kid who proved that a therapeutic approach to juvenile justice could catch the most challenging teens before they graduated to a lifetime in prison. Instead, he became the boy who nearly dashed King County’s fledgling effort to confront youth crime in new ways.

The pillow salesman had so much crack cocaine pounding through his bloodstream he hadn’t slept for two weeks, he would later say. Even the drug dealers were counseling Mike Lindell to slow down. It was March 2008, and the Minneapolis-area entrepreneur’s life was in free fall. Marriage broken. House lost. Business — a company he started four years earlier called MyPillow — struggling. Two weeks into this particular bender, Lindell went to his usual drug dealers for a fix. But the guys had already put word out on the street: No one sell to Lindell until he sleeps. “They were three of

A couple vacationing on California´s coast spotted a body in the Pacific Ocean near the Hart family crash site Saturday afternoon. A bystander pulled the body from the stormy surf and onto the beach where it was recovered by Westport Fire crews. The Mendocino County Sheriff´s Office says the body appears to be that of an African American female, and that deputies are investigating the possibility that it may be one of the two missing Hart girls. Official identification will most likely be done through DNA analysis, which could take several weeks. The Mendocino County Sheriff´s Office is monitoring ocean conditions

How to win an argument about guns

Tragically, predictably, infuriatingly, we’re again mourning a shooting — this time at YouTube’s headquarters — even as the drive for gun safety legislation has stalled in Washington. Polls show that nine out of 10 Americans favor basic steps like universal background checks before gun purchases, but the exceptions are the president and a majority in Congress. Usually pundits toss out their own best arguments while ignoring the other side’s, but today I’m going to try something new and engage directly with the arguments made by gun advocates: You liberals are in a panic over guns, but look at the numbers.

Nothing says “middle-aged, Sunday, married, no football on” like walking through the big-box hardware store with a toilet seat under each arm. I needed only one seat but had neglected to note whether the commode at home was normal-sized or had that fancy elongated shape that gives you a classier evacuation experience. I was not about to call home and ask my wife to measure the toilet. Buy ’em both! This is America. Return the wrong one or keep it for Halloween, put it around my neck, and say, “I’m CNN’s ratings.” Went to the self-checkout, because a clerk might have thought,

The public face of the gun-control movement demanded $1 million Thursday from the Florida-based grocery chain in a tweet, just one day after calling for a “die-in” protest at its stores. Some NFL players are reportedly considering new ways to protest after NFL owners voted on a new national anthem policy Wednesday, reports Sports Illustrated´s Robert Klemko. According to Klemko, some are discussing ways to skirt new rules "just to spite the NFL." The policy removes a requirement for players to be on the field for the anthem, and gives players the option to stay in the locker room. Teams will be fined for any personnel that "do not show proper respect for the flag and Anthem” on the sidelines. Other journalists were hearing similar things from players they talked to.

President Trump cannot block people from his @realDonaldTrump account just because he doesn’t like their political views, a Manhattan federal judge ruled on Wednesday. Doing so violates their First Amendment right to free speech because Twitter is a “public forum,” Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald wrote in a landmark ruling that could change how public officials use Twitter. “We reject the defendants’ contentions that the First Amendment does not apply in this case and that the President’s personal First Amendment interests supersede those of plaintiffs,” the judge wrote in her 75-page ?decision.
