U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday vowed to take steps to improve background checks for gun buyers in the wake of last week’s deadly shooting at a Florida high school, Reuters reported. “It’s not going to be talk like it has been in the past,” Trump said in a meeting about school safety that included six students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and educators were slain by gunman Nikolas Cruz, who was armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle. Survivors of that shooting poured into the Florida state capital, Tallahassee, to demand that lawmakers restrict

Nikki Haley, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, on Tuesday responded to Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s speech to the UN Security Council, saying he has a choice between achieving peace and “hateful rhetoric”. Haley also made clear that while the United States is holding out its hand for peace, it will not chase after the Palestinian Arabs. “I sit here today offering the outstretched hand of the United States to the Palestinian people in the cause of peace. We are fully prepared to look to a future of prosperity and co-existence,” she said. “The Palestinian leadership has a choice

BRUSSELS is gearing up for a bitter trade war with US and has pledged to fight fire with fire if Washington carries out its threat to introduce import barriers to steel and aluminium products from Europe. European Union trade officials have warned such a move would result in counter-tarrifs being slapped on exports from the US within days. They said iconic US products ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to Jack Daniels whiskey would be targeted in any retaliatory strikes and that preparations for such a confrontation were in full swing. Analysts said the choice of products was significant as Harley-Davidson is based

WASHINGTON - A federal judge on Tuesday denied a request by AT&T Inc (T.N) to compel the U.S. Justice Department to disclose any records of communications between the White House and government lawyers that detail President Donald Trump’s views on the company’s proposed $85 billion merger with Time Warner Inc (TWX.N). The Justice Department on Friday moved to prevent AT&T from arguing that politics played a role in the government’s decision to stop the merger, which Trump has publicly criticized. Share prices for AT&T and Time Warner were steady on the news, both down slightly for the day. “We respect the judge’s

CONSERVATIVE MP Iain Duncan Smith stunned BBC host Jo Coburn and Labour MP Chuka Umunna as he whipped out a list of EU regulations he would change during a Brexit debate. Mr Duncan Smith said the UK would look at EU regulation to see whether it should be changed post-Brexit. It comes after the Brexit Secretary spoke in Vienna and outlined the UK’s post-Brexit relationship, where he said Britain and the EU should be able to trust each other with “regulations and the institutions that enforce them”. Speaking on BBC’s Daily Politics, Mr Duncan Smith outlined EU regulation that he thought should

A British couple kidnapped and held hostage by suspected terrorists while on holiday in South Africa have been dramatically rescued by counter-terrorism forces. The pair had been snatched while visiting KwaZulu-Natal in the north-east of the country and their family were not even aware they were in danger or indeed missing. Anti-terrorist officers who were monitoring two suspects discovered information linking them to a couple in Cape Town who had not returned as expected on February 15. Fearing their life was in danger, a specialist force was put together to storm the suspected terrorists´ home in Vryheid, a cattle ranching and mining town

If I had a say in this, there’d be only two countries taking part in Winter Olympics 2018 – the United States versus Russia. We don’t need the rest. Like it was when we beat them in hockey, 1980. As you can see, there are too many countries around the world…too many, absolutely, around Pyeonchang, which is in South Korea. Was that really the best choice? Never mind. That’s another topic. But I must say this – my Uncle Marv did return (wounded) from the war there; but 33,652 other Americans did not. It’s called “The Forgotten War.” I’ll bet it is not forgotten

An ancient oak tree marking the border between England and Wales has fallen down at the grand age of 1,000. The Buttington Oak was planted as a boundary marker and had stood proudly for centuries. It was planted along Offa´s Dyke - a line of earth that fo llows the border between England and Wales - named after Anglo Saxon king Offa. But images show the historic oak, with a girth of 36 feet, now lying on its side in a field near Welshpool in Powys. Eagle-eyed Rob McBride, who has the nickname ´Tree Hunter,´ spotted the grounded oak. Rob,

Scot Peterson chose to resign and retire Thursday morning Israel said. “I am devastated,” Israel said. “Sick to my stomach. He never went in.” (Snip) Israel said two other deputies, Edward Eason and Guntis Treijs are also under investigation and have been put on “restrictive duty.” According to Israel, Peterson remained outside Building 12 for about four minutes. Asked in 1972 if he believed in miracles, Billy Graham answered: Yes, Jesus performed some and there are many "miracles around us today, including television and airplanes." Graham was no theologian. Neither was he a prophet. Jesus said "a prophet hath no honor in his own country." Prophets take adversarial stances toward their times, as did the 20th century´s two greatest religious leaders, Martin Luther King and Pope John Paul II. Graham did not. Partly for that reason, his country showered him with honors. So, the subtitle of Grant Wacker´s 2014 book "America´s Pastor: Billy Graham and the Shaping of a Nation"

New York University has issued a public apology and fired their director of food service after students pointed out the watermelon-flavoured water and collard greens the school was serving during Black History Month were racially insensitive. College of Arts and Science sophomore Nia Harris noticed the offensive meal when she walked into Weinstein Passport Dining Hall - before alerting the deans of the school and NYU’s President Hamilton of the insensitive and “stereotypical” meal. In her letter, which she also shared on Facebook, Harris wrote: “It is with great sadness and frustration that I even have to send this email.”

For the past year, chief executives have often talked about the new sense of moral responsibility that corporations have to help their communities and confront social challenges even when Washington won’t. What if the finance industry — credit card companies like Visa, Mastercard and American Express; credit card processors like First Data; and banks like JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo — were to effectively set new rules for the sales of guns in America? Collectively, they have more leverage over the gun industry than any lawmaker. And it wouldn’t be hard for them to take a stand.

Billy Graham and Ruth Bell met at Wheaton College in the fall of 1940. A vivacious and feisty beauty who had grown up in China as the daughter of Presbyterian medical missionaries, Ruth was the prize catch of her class. After a first date, to a performance of Handel’s “Messiah,” Billy wrote home to announce that he had met the girl he planned to marry. Ruth described Billy as “a man that knew God in a very unusual way.” Graham died Wednesday in his home in Montreat, N.C., at the age of 99. The courtship between Billy and Ruth, though hardly

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The Latest on the deadly Florida school shooting (all times local): 9:45 p.m. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is being challenged by angry students, teachers and parents who are demanding stronger gun-control measures after a shooting rampage claimed 17 lives at a Florida high school. One of those confronting Rubio at a CNN´s "Stand Up" town hall Wednesday night was Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter Jaime Guttenberg was killed on Feb. 14 with 16 others. Guttenberg told Rubio that his comments about the shooting "and those of your president this week have been pathetically weak."

He listened as the kids were being shot. Today Officer Scott Peterson resigned from the Broward Sheriff’s department. His conduct and cowardly behavior reveals a larger sentiment within a heavily politicized law enforcement agency. Politics is the filter for all decision-making. REPEAT: Politics in Broward and Dade

Adults who prostitute traumatized teenagers to advance their political agenda should be ashamed of themselves, and those at CNN who do it should be fired. Last night, moderator Jake Tapper looked on silently as Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Cameron Kasky compared Sen. Marco Rubio to a mass child murderer. Kasky prefaced his ignorant attack on the National Rifle Association by saying, “Senator Rubio, it’s hard to look at you and not look down the barrel of an AR-15 and not look at [shooter´s name], but you’re here.” Such vile calumny would ordinarily demand censure even from the Democrat

With high school students from Parkland in the Capitol this week advocating for gun control, the bill that would have allowed superintendents and principals to designate trained employees who can carry concealed weapons at school didn’t get heard as scheduled. That did not stop debate over the issue. In fact, it had a growing national audience, spurred on by President Donald Trump’s endorsement of the idea on Wednesday. "If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly," Trump said during a White House event with students and teachers. Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota,

On Tuesday evening, I was watching CNN (note to editor: my request for hardship duty pay will follow) when I observed a new low point – and considering the recent history of CNN, that’s really saying something. The program was The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Like all of the hosts on CNN, including news anchors, Blitzer is consistently anti-Trump so I wasn’t expecting anything close to fair and balanced. But what I saw this time was even more obnoxious and telling. As Blitzer and his talking head guests opined, a chyron on the bottom of the screen

A lawsuit against Microsoft may seem outlandish but expresses a not-uncommon user complaint. Filed earlier this month by a “Frank K. Dickman Jr.” of Albuquerque, NM., the lawsuit seeks damages of $600 million from Microsoft and its CEO Satya Nadella. The upgrade “deleted the cached, or backup, version of Windows 7,” the complaint states. “The only sensible remedy is for Microsoft to supply the OEM version of its operating system by download from its website and confirmed by the key code which came with the computer,” the filing notes. The owner is demanding that Microsoft supply the Windows 7 operating
