Miami residents fear ´climate gentrification´

Schiller Sanon-Jules remembers eating fried pork and plantains in Little Haiti when he was a kid in the 1980s. “It was a taste of Haiti,” says Sanon-Jules, who immigrated to the US as a child and now owns the Little Haiti Thrift and Gift Store, one of the shops on the neighborhood’s brightly-colored main street. (Snip) On Miami’s beachfront, rising seas regularly push water up through the ground during high tides. Flooding is more and more of a problem. But Little Haiti sits roughly a mile inland, and on relatively high ground. Sanon-Jules’ store, for example, is 11 feet above

Elevation 11 feet is ´high ground´? Article admits near end that shore-front properties are booming.

IIRC, the last Ice Age ended about 20,000 years ago. Its a good thing we didn´t have automobiles, BBQ grills, lawn mowers, factories, etc. or humans would be blamed for that!

It couldn´t possibly be related to beach erosion. No, not possible. Same issue in Monterey Bay (California), beach erosion attributed to rising sea level.

Condominiums in south beach are going for 20 to 30 million . The main reason that they will need to move is because of growth. Little Haiti sits next to Miami shores which they basically destroyed and was one of the most expensive communities .Little Haiti is crime infested .

I lived in Miami for about a year. Longest decade of my life. The weather is beautiful, but most of the neighborhoods are ´no go zones.´ The traffic is horrid. I´ve been forced to drive at over 110 mph to keep from getting ran over and I´ve sat in traffic on I-95 for hours reading a book. I see no reason I would move there.

My house is at about 700´ elevation. Springs break out of the ground by the house virtually every spring, and run all summer. Is the raising and the lowering of the local water table to be blamed on climate change? If so, the climate changes twice per year.

There is little accurate information that shows any legitimate sea level changes in the last century or two.
Land levels are more likely to drop locally than the sea is to rise globally.

I call BS. Probably subsidence if it isn´t entirely their imagination, this was marshland and sand. Load it up heavily and it just flows out. Any building not having piles down to bedrock will eventually settle on that kind of land.

It is part of the natural life-cycle for barrier islands (like Miami Beach, Cape Hatteras, Chincoteague Island, et al) to migrate towards the shore over time and to gradually disappear beneath the water as they are reborn further offshore to start the cycle all over again. It´s virtually impossible to stop these glorified sandbars from sinking, and to blame it on a non-existent sea-level rise is doubly-disingenuous.

Same basic thing for oceanic atolls (e.g Polynesia and the Maldives), which temporarily rise around aging volcanic islands, and later recede back beneath the waves, as a natural part of their life cycle.

I just spent a week in the Miami area and have this to say. If your not within walking distance of a beach, the area is largely a crap hole. The traffic is atrocious. 30 minutes just to get off of the off ramp during rush hour.

It wasnt that way in the 80´s.

LEMONT, Ill. - Chicago-area Democrats cast their ballots on Tuesday in a nationally watched congressional primary election that could signal whether the anti-Trump sentiment that has galvanized the party´s base could also sweep moderate lawmakers out of office. U.S. Representative Dan Lipinski is facing a stiff challenge from businesswoman Marie Newman, who says the incumbent´s socially conservative views are out of touch with the district that first elected him in 2004. Lipinski, who opposes abortion and gay marriage, says Democrats need to avoid ideological litmus tests if they want to win back the working-class voters who supported Republican Donald Trump

You must always check the date on news stories popping up on Facebook. It’s embarrassing to register shock — James Garner dead? Oh no! — only to be informed that he passed away in 2014. So a week ago, when I noticed a CNN report headlined “Nation of Islam leader Farrakhan delivers anti-Semitic speech,” the first thing I did was see whether he delivered the speech in 2012 or 2002. I mean, talk about an evergreen headline, right? Feb. 25, 2018. Nation of Islam Saviours’ Day. In Chicago. Prompting me to then wonder if the local papers covered it. Nope.

WASHINGTON — Bernie Sanders is back in the Senate minority. Hillary Clinton is selling books and playing with grandchildren. And the Democratic Party is still navigating the fallout from their bitter 2016 presidential nominating fight. The latest reminder came this week as party leaders failed to agree on how to reduce the influence of so-called "superdelegates" in picking Democrats´ next White House nominee. That class of party leaders — Democratic National Committee members, elected officials and others — overwhelmingly favored Clinton two years ago, inflaming Sanders backers who accused Democratic power players of stacking the deck. James Kallstrom is no joke. With nearly thirty years in the FBI, several of them as the Assistant Director, Kallstrom knows how the agency functions far more than most. So when he says there was a plot to protect Hillary Clinton from prosecution and to illegally influence the 2016 Election people should pay attention. Kallstrom goes on to call the entirety of the FBI investigation against Donald Trump completely phony. Maria Bartiromo’s own take appears very much to compliment Mr. Kallstrom’s assertions. President Trump says he didn´t collude with Russia in 2016, promising something to a foreign country in exchange for his installation as president. That seems increasingly likely to prove true. Where they do not spring from simple malignancy, critics’ arguments that Trump used Russian intervention to win the election are mostly an excuse to avoid the plain truth that Hillary Clinton deservedly lost because she was an awful candidate. And the country is better for that result. We aren’t persuaded, either, that the Russians’ paltry $100,000 in Facebook spending had anything to do with Trump’s win, given that very little of it

Discussing cities is like talking about the knots in a net: they’re crucial, but they’re only one part of the larger story of the net and what it’s supposed to do. It makes little sense to talk about knots in isolation when it’s the net that matters. Cities are part of the system we’ve invented to keep people alive on Earth. People tend to like cities, and have been congregating in them ever since the invention of agriculture, 10,000 or so years ago. That’s why we call it civilisation. This origin story underlines how agriculture made cities possible, by providing

This made her the highest-paid anchor at NBC following Matt Lauer´s departure, but unfortunately, courting Kelly may not have been a smart investment.  Her first attempt at success, a Sunday night news magazine dubbed Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly, debuted in June 2017 and soon proved to be a flop.
