Biggest full moon of 2018
rising on New Year´s Day

(Video) - On this first day of 2018, at 5 p.m. EST (2200 GMT), the January full moon will arrive at perigee, its closest point to Earth in an orbit. Today, our lunar companion reaches an extreme perigee distance of 221,559 miles (356,565 kilometers). When these events coincide (a full moon at perigee), some people refer to the event as a "supermoon." This will be the "biggest full moon of 2018," and the difference in the moon´s apparent size, compared with when it is positioned at its average distance from Earth, will be 7.3 percent. But that variation is not readily apparent to observers who are viewing the moon directly.

Comments:
It´s free. Just remember to bundle up tonight, if you have a view. (In Kalifornia, now that weed is legal, look to see if the moon IS made of cheese.) More explanations of various annual full moons and other great pictures:

AND it will be the first of two full moons in January 2018.
And there will be two full moons in March 2018.
Poor old February gets left out in the cold, with no full moons for her.
How about that? Two blue moons in the first three months of 2018!
This does not happen very often.

Don´t cry for February, it has Black History Month. There is no White History Month, nor Brown.

A supermoon that you wouldn’t know is any bigger or brighter if you hadn’t read about it on the internet? As Lucy Van Pelt said about eclipses: “Somebody messed up in production.”

Astronomers determined a long time ago that the orbit of the moon is ever so gradually growing larger, as the gravitational attraction between earth and moon is slightly less than the moon´s angular momentum. (Meaning those total solar eclipses will eventually become annular eclipses, at best, and the moon will eventually escape earth´s gravitational pull and become more-influenced by the sun´s mass than the earth´s.)

That´s a long-winded way of saying that every time the moon is full at perigee, tabloids can accurately declare that no full moon will ever be bigger.

Jupiter is renowned for being a stormy planet, but the latest images reveal it´s not just the famous Great Red spot that has horrific weather. This incredible new image image captures the intensity of the jets and vortices in Jupiter’s North North Temperate Belt. It reveals massive clouds made of ammonia-ice crystals, and mysterious dark patches where scientists think the clouds are deeper. The image was taken when the spacecraft was about 4,900 miles (7,900 kilometers) from the tops of the clouds of the gas giant. NASA’s Juno spacecraft took this color-enhanced image at 10:31 p.m. PDT on May 23, 2018 (1:31 a.m. EDT on May 24),

Officials in Virginia are warning residents to be on the lookout after an invasive plant was found Tuesday in the northern part of the state that can cause third-degree burns and even permanent blindness. The Massey Herbarium at Virginia Tech said in a Facebook post that 30 giant hogweed plants were discovered in Clarke County, located between Winchester and Leesburg. The plant contains a very toxic sap, that when combined with sun exposure, can cause severe health hazards. "In brief, the sap prevents your skin from protecting itself from sunlight, which leads to a very bad sunburn," according to the New York Department

Is Trump gaslighting

Washington Post, by Ishaan Tharoor    Original Article

Critics of President Trump routinely accuse him of "gaslighting" — that is, of deliberately repeating misinformation to the extent that the public starts doubting verifiable facts and believing in Trump's self-serving talking points. On Sunday, a flurry of more than a dozen presidential tweets offered clear reminders of his tactics. In one glaring example, Trump reiterated a lie that his political opponents are responsible for the forcible separation of the children of undocumented migrants arriving at the American border — it was his own administration that chose to pursue these measures, which have sparked a growing backlash.

The Port of Virginia is one of the most significant ports in the United States. It facilitates $242 million worth of commerce a day, and a full 9 percent — or 343,000 — of Virginia’s jobs are port-related. But there’s a problem. It’s not big enough. Not when cargo ships have gotten bigger, which threatens both business and safety. Experts say deepening and widening of the port at its channel is crucial. (Snip) How much is that? Around a billion dollars. Virginia has already secured $695 million in private and state investment, and the state is asking for $300 million more from the federal government.
