Ex-Black Panther awarded $3.75 million
after clash with Oakland councilwoman

San Francisco Chronicle, by Bob Egelko

Original Article

Posted By:Ribicon, 12/23/2017 9:54:06 PM

An East Bay jury has awarded former Black Panther leader Elaine Brown $3.75 million in damages for injuries she suffered when Oakland Councilwoman Desley Brooks assaulted her during an argument at a downtown restaurant. (Snip) The women’s confrontation stemmed from Brown’s recent venture to build affordable housing for formerly incarcerated people near the urban farm she operates in West Oakland. The two faced off in Everett & Jones Barbeque, a restaurant near Jack London Square, in October 2015. Brown said Brooks, 54, threatened to block her funding request and told her the project was “of no benefit to black people.”

Comments:
They handle city business street-style out in Oakland.

Lemme guess. The City of Oakland, not Ms. Brooks, is on the hook for the $3.75 million.

Close #1, but with government you have to spread that out to taxpayers in any US territory. Sooner or later, one way or another you and anyone who actually pays Federal taxes will be part of the ´cost of government.´

Everett and Jones is swanky? Wow. They´ve gone way upscale since I´ve been in the East Bay. Used to be a wee little bbq place on San Pablo with 4 tables inside and maybe as many outside. Mild, medium or scream in pain bbq served with white air bread. Good stuff but purely working man "atmosphere"...

President Trump is employing techniques “popularized by Joseph Stalin” to demonize the press and his approach could do great harm to the nation in the long run, Sen. Jeff Flake said Sunday. In an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” the retiring Arizona Republican and outspoken critic of the president said he’s deeply troubled by how Mr. Trump attacks the media. “You can talk about crowd size, and this is pretty innocuous if there’s a falsehood. Lots of the news from sub-Saharan Africa is about war, famine, poverty or political upheaval. So it’s understandable if many Americans think most Africans who immigrate to the United States are poorly educated and desperate. Research tells another story. While many are refugees, large numbers are beneficiaries of the diversity-visa program aimed at boosting immigration from underrepresented nations. And on average, African immigrants are better educated than people born in the U.S. or the immigrant population as a whole.
