The Senator Who Wouldn’t Leave

We should not be surprised by the news that “at least four senators are urging Al Franken to reconsider resigning, including two who issued statements calling for the resignation two weeks ago and said they now feel remorse over what they feel was a rush to judgment.” One can’t help but notice that 11 days have passed since Al Franken declared, “in the coming weeks I will be resigning as member of the United States Senate.” Not only has Franken not resigned yet, he has not publicly declared a date of resignation. If Franklin doesn´t resign , it is another sign that the democratic party is racist after forcing John Conyers to resign.

I figured that he was not going away in the way he "resigned" on the Senate floor. Like all liberals, he was not sorry for what he did but sorry that he got caught. If he does not resign I would love to see Pete Hegseth from Fox & Friends Weekends run against him. Pete is a veteran and would wipe the floor, literally and figuratively with Weird Al Frankenstein.

Since Roy Moore won´t be going into the Senate, the whole reason (from the Democrat perspective) for Franken to resign is a non starter. They were going to take the moral high ground and say if Franken resigned, then Moore can´t be seated in the holier than thou Senate, but since Moore lost, the Senate doesn´t have to be holy.

The iconic I-Conyers announced his “retirement” and the iconic funnyman Franken announced his resignation down the road. Franken will probably announce his retirement at the end of his term to avoid resignation n disgrace. Of course both could be expelled but we know that will never happen.

I see what they did there. There was a hilarious ongoing sketch on Saturday Night Live in the 1975-79 era. It was called "The Thing That Wouldn´t Leave." John Belushi starred as a party guest that wouldn´t leave and wouldn´t take a hint when the hosts tried to ease him out the door.

I would call Franken a disgusting lying weasel, but that would be unfair to hard-working weasels the world over.

On his first day as Secretary of the Interior, last March, Ryan Zinke rode through downtown Washington, D.C., on a roan named Tonto. When the Secretary is working at the department’s main office, on C Street, a staff member climbs up to the roof of the building and hoists a special flag, which comes down when Zinke goes home for the day. To provide entertainment for his employees, the Secretary had an arcade game called Big Buck Hunter installed in the cafeteria. The game comes with plastic rifles, which players aim at animated deer. On the Friday before Christmas, Fox News confirmed that its chief Washington correspondent, James Rosen, had left the network. He had worked there for 18 years and become something of a legend. The U.S. Justice Department under the Obama administration was so frustrated by his reporting on U.S. intelligence about North Korea that it conducted a leak investigation into his sources. The network cited no reason for Rosen´s exit and did not announce it on the air. According to Rosen´s former colleagues, however, he had an established pattern of flirting aggressively with many peers and had made sexual advances toward three

In the minds of today’s political activists, the objects of their fixations represent an existential threat. This is how opposition to an arcane, bureaucratic decision by the Federal Communications Commission transformed from a liberal cause into an obsession. This is also how the FCC’s chairman, Ajit Pai, became the subject of almost daily persecution. The source of great consternation on the left is the FCC’s decision to scrap an Obama-era rule implemented in 2015 deemed “net neutrality.” The end of net neutrality will allow internet service providers to, if they choose, privilege the content of providers that they own or support. Republicans’ first victory of 2018 will likely be Judge Timothy J. Kelly’s denial of the plaintiff’s motion for a preliminary injunction in English v. Trump following a hearing on the Friday before Christmas. The case began over Thanksgiving weekend when Richard Cordray, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s first director, promoted his chief of staff Leandra English to deputy director. The soon-to-be Ohio gubernatorial candidate then announced his resignation would take effect at the end of the day and declared English acting director until the Senate confirmed a new one. My hometown, Portland, Oregon, voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton in 2016, but the Democratic Party lost almost everywhere else in the state, including in every county east of the Cascade Mountains. Except for in Vermont and Massachusetts, the same urban/rural divide in American politics exists around the country. A county-by-county map of the election looks like a Clinton archipelago in a vast Trump ocean. Lots of journalists have ventured into the rust belt to find out why so many working-class voters abandoned the Democrats for Donald Trump, but hardly anyone is asking why blue-collar voters in the rural West have

Save for the occasional stains left by waters that rose roughly three feet high, the outside of the brick ranch-style homes along Lucian Lane looked mostly untouched. The grim evidence of Hurricane Harvey’s unprecedented flooding was instead marked by piles of debris lining the streets: crumbling Sheetrock, warped dressers, soggy mattresses, faded photos in shattered frames, an elliptical trainer that looked like a mangled grasshopper. Members of Team Rubicon, an emergency response outfit run by military veterans, had already scoured this neighborhood in Friendswood, a middle-class suburb southeast of Houston, gutting the houses and hauling the storm’s detritus to the

It had been two days since Hurricane Harvey made landfall, and the wind and rain continued to lash a wide swath of Texas, leveling houses, flooding cars, and leaving millions without power, clean water, or food. The news reports had gone from bad to catastrophic, with the National Weather Service declaring, “This event is unprecedented and all impacts are unknown.” And Beto O’Rourke was headed toward the storm. When Harvey hit, O’Rourke, a three-term congressman from El Paso, had been in the midst of his month-long “Town Haulin’ Across Texas” tour, introducing himself to voters during the House’s August recess

At some time or another, every historian of Rome has been asked to say where we are, today, on Rome’s cycle of decline. Historians might squirm at such attempts to use the past but, even if history does not repeat itself, nor come packaged into moral lessons, it can deepen our sense of what it means to be human and how fragile our societies are. In the middle of the second century, the Romans controlled a huge, geographically diverse part of the globe, from northern Britain to the edges of the Sahara, from the Atlantic to Mesopotamia.
