The leg lamp! The frozen pole!
Fox prepares to bring a holiday classic
to life with ´A Christmas Story Live!´

On a backlot in Burbank, it’s an oven-like December day — but no matter, because Christmas is on its way. Maya Rudolph is roaming “snow-dusted” streets wearing a surgical mask — to keep the rampant particles at bay. Matthew Broderick has stopped to snap photos of trees that are only partially frosted in an area meant to resemble a nippy Indiana neighborhood. Every which way actors are braving ’40s-era winter clothing — sweat stains be damned. And, not to go unnoticed, a cluster of life-size “leg lamp” cutouts stand watch on a nearby stage. Come Sunday — four days from

I love this movie, watch it every year. And any other past year, I would probably tune in for this, just to see.
But Hollywood, the entertainment industry has just sucked out all the joy, or any enthusiasm for any of its products.

I hate it when they try to remake classics. No one can replace Darrin McGavin. He might be the greatest ham actor ever and I mean that as a compliment.

I´ve seen this movie twice, and frankly, the second time was to be polite. It leaves me as cold as the pole the kid stuck their tongue to. The various ´Santa Claus´ shows are okay, but don´t really connect with me, anymore. Once was enough - though I´ll dust ´em off and bring ´em out if family wants to watch.

I miss the real Christmas Classics, like Little Drummer Boy. Or the Christmas Story.

Just can´t get excited about what Hollywood thinks Christmas is about.

"A Christmas Story" is as near perfect as a piece of film art can be. Trying to redo it in another medium (or trying to recreate it at all) is like redoing the Mona Lisa with spray paints or Michelangelo´s David in paper mache.

The Christmas Story is a rather unique part of American Cinema. It can´t be ruined by stage productions. Almost any successful film or event in history can be made into a musical or stage play. Sometimes the productions are really good, sometimes they are awful.

Odds are they will screw this up. Shepherd was an exceptional writer. All of his stuff his great. There are other stories about confrontations with Scut Farkus. All are available.

This will be like the remakes of ´Miracle on 34th Street´. The original with Edmund Gwenn was perfect. The ones that followed were abominations.

I’ll watch because I really enjoy the story. I watch the rebroadcast every year. Neither the original producers nor Gene Shepherd asked my permission to use my life story but they got it just right: northern Indiana, check; little brother, check; tongue stuck to the light pole, check; Red Ryder BB gun, check and double check!

One of the few modern Christmas movies that deserves the badge of classic. I remember the first time I saw it. I was suffering insimnia and turned on the boob tube at 2AM only to get stuck in this crazy christmas story about a BB gun. That was 1989, the film had been made years earlier in 1983. No one had ever so much as heard of it.

I knew my dad would love it so I tried to find it on VHS. I had three of the VHS outlets hunting for it for two weeks, one of them finally found it. They had no idea what it was either, no one at work beklieved I had actually seen such a screwy Christmas Movie. It was years before I saw it on TV a second time.

My Dada Loved it and its been a tradition ever since. For many years we had to studiously avoid accidentally seeing it on TV so it would be fresh again Christmas eve.

Now, of course, it´s everywhere and the leg lamp and the Red Rider BB gun are Americon Icons. Funny for a movie that went straight into the dustbin of history after it was made only to be redicovered a decade later and be in a league with Miracle on 34th Street and Its a wonderful life.

I only read the ´extract´ to this article, but I was struck by the similarity (describing when making the movie) to the ´Lifetime?´ movie ´Christmas in Mississippi´ which was just on TV..... It was made just down the road from me in Gulfport, Miss, and I know some of the ´extras´. Hot & Humid! They had to work very hard to NOT show everyone sweating, as it was set at Christmastime! (But I must admit, a cold front came in just before they shot the last scenes, and a bunch of the extras were still dressed for hot weather..... and they about ´froze to death´ during the overnight shoot!

Oh well, the Show Must Go On!
