Yes, Deficits Still Matter
National Review, by Kevin D. Williamson

There’s a lot not to like about the current Republican tax proposal, beginning with its effect on the debt, to which it will add about $1.3 trillion according to current estimates. It is becoming something of an unfortunate tradition in American politics that deficits only matter to the party out of power. Republicans wailed and moaned about the Obama-Pelosi-Reid deficits and, to their credit, reduced them when they came to power in Congress. But having whiffed on health-care reform and much else toward which they have turned their increasingly addled, muddled, and unample attention, they are desperate to pass some

It will only add deficits if they don´t cut spending. Eliminate at least 5-10 federal agencies (the ones you can´t find in the constitution´s delegated federal powers) and I bet you´d save a ton of money, even have room for deeper tax cuts, in fact.

Kevin seems to be a static analyzer. Surely there will be increased business activity which generates tax revenue. Look no further back than 1980 to see how revenue increased with the Reagan tax cuts.

Back to the old zero-sum game. I don´t how you can even make such an analysis in the midst of such a long-term suppressed economy. Status quo for sure!

First, if they don´t do anything, will they be adding to the deficit?
YES.

Second, is the $1.3 trillion, over 10 years, or $130 billion per year, and increase over what would be if no tax reform was done, or just will be added to the deficit?

Third, the Democrats will complain, regardless of the plan as they don´t want any success, so might as well adjust the taxes to help the economy.

Forth, they can adjust the SALT and other items next year, after the new baseline is established, and growth is happening.

Does the California Model

The alleged success of the California model is one of the more intense controversies in the nerdier corners of public-policy debate. For many progressives, California’s metastasizing liberalism proves you can have Scandinavian-style social policies and tax rates and still have robust economic growth. For conservatives, California is like a bumblebee. On paper, the damn thing shouldn’t be able to fly — and yet it does. Thus the cottage industry on the right of prophesizing California’s inevitable demise. What’s always bothered me about the whole argument is how it leaves out important factors. For me, the biggest one was always geography

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that while he supports additional barriers at the U.S.-Mexico border, he believes some of the estimated costs for President Trump’s border wall are too high to justify. "I remain a fiscal conservative, even on the wall, so I’m not excited about spending $20, $30, $40 billion on a wall. I’m still a believer that we don’t have money to spend. We’re $700 billion in the hole,” Paul said on CNN.  “And while I will vote for money for barriers, I’m not voting for $40 billion for barriers,” Paul added.  A report last week detailed Trump’s

A bit more than a year after voters booted him out of office, former Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio has announced he´s running for the U.S. Senate. The 85-year-old Arizonan—an unrepentant birther, nativist, and whiny baby—told the Washington Examiner that he will run on a platform of supporting the agenda of President Donald Trump, who pardoned Arpaio last year after a federal judge held the ex-sheriff in criminal contempt. "I have a lot to offer. I´m a big supporter of President Trump," Arpaio told the paper. "I´m going to have to work hard; you don´t take anything for granted.

After criticism by some local officials of a new program that refers people caught with four ounces or less of marijuana for fines and community service, El Paso, Texas, Police Chief Greg Allen turned out to be a surprise defender of bypassing the usual criminal justice rigmarole of booking, mug shots, and jails. The most exhausting thing about the Middle East — except for the bloodshed, poverty, tyranny, etc. — is that it refuses to conform to how it’s described in the West. It’s like journalists, diplomats, and politicians want to announce a football game, but the players keep insisting on playing rugby. The field looks similar. The scoring isn’t all that different. It’s just a different game. But don’t tell the gang in the booth. (Snip)Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, convenes there. A new study using more than 38 years satellite and weather balloon temperature data hypothesizes that global temperatures are going up more slowly than projected by most climate models. And right on time, these results were challenged by other researchers who defend the scientific climate consensus as embodied in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports. The new study done by University of Alabama in Huntsville climatologists John Christy and Richard McNider published in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Science argues consensus models may not have accurately captured how storms in the tropics expel excess heat back into space and/or that they have failed to

I have a new ritual on Sunday mornings. I wake up, get my coffee, fire up Twitter, and check in on the mental health of the pundit class. More often than not, President Donald Trump has tweeted something that outrages a whole mess of people, and the fallout can last for hours on end. Part of me is amused by this. It is pretty clear that one of the purposes of Trump’s Twitter feed is to drive people crazy, and for the life of me, I don’t know why people rush to take the bait.

Our national debt is $20.5 trillion and heading to $30 trillion by 2030. You´d think that this would be a wake-up call for Republicans, who control all three branches of government, to finally take spending seriously. Instead, they want to get rid of the spending caps meant to constrain lawmakers´ uncontrollable appetite to spend. The spending caps were implemented as part of the Budget Control Act of 2011. The deal itself was the result of a vigorous debt ceiling battle between those who wanted the unconditional ability to raise the debt limit and those who called for fiscal discipline going

Was a 14-year-old girl molested by Alabama Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore, or is she lying? It’s a yes-or-no question. Was a 16-year-old girl sexually assaulted by Moore, or is she lying? Again, it’s a yes-or-no question. Finally, do you believe that there are conditions under which a child molester should sit in the United States Senate? Again, this question is binary. Yet many conservatives seem to be seeking a third answer to all three of these questions, mostly to avoid giving straight answers. Let’s begin with the first question: Did Roy Moore molest a 14-year-old girl?
