Le Corbusier: Liar, Cheat,
Thief, and Plagiarist

Taki´s Magazine, by Theodore Dalrymple

Some time ago, I was asked to review a vast biography of Bertolt Brecht, the German playwright and poet, by an admirer of his work. It is seldom that one reads hundreds of pages about someone without coming across a single instance of a decent, kind, or selfless act, but so it was with Brecht. He couldn’t even be bothered to wash for the convenience of others. The French fascist architect Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, was another of this charmless ilk, though cleaner than Brecht (a Marxist, the latter’s decision not to wash was his tribute, albeit not

The End of Prestige
PJ Media, by Richard Fernandez    Original Article

To understand the damage the storm of scandal is creating in Hollywood, the media and Washington one must go back nearly a hundred years to a time when prestige ruled the world. Whenever a small group of people rule over multitudes coercion usually becomes an impractical method of subjugation. The only alternative to physical control, as 19th century Europeans found, was bluff, or prestige as it was then called. Prestige made it possible for a few to govern numerous (and often violent) subjects. Prestige was almost entirely psychological, based on instilling a genuine respect and admiration among the ruled. The technological

The collapse overnight of negotiations to form a new German government is yet another shock to the liberal world order, not of the same magnitude as the Brexit vote or the US presidential election, but of the same character. Chancellor Angela Merkel´s tenure in office is now in jeopardy. After failing to form a coalition between the odd trio of Christian Democrats, Free Democrats and Greens, Merkel may have to call new elections, which are likely to produce the same intractable stalemate as before. There are many ways in which the deep division in German opinion about the migrant flood

Bonn climate talks end with

BONN, Germany — As the first glimmer of dawn appeared across the Rhine River, delegates stumbled out of an all-night negotiating session at this year’s global climate talks, expressing satisfaction Saturday at the progress made toward creating a comprehensive rule book for fighting global warming. The two-week meeting in Bonn, Germany, was billed as a "blue-collar" event designed to hammer out the technical details of the 2015 Paris climate accord. But fears had loomed beforehand that the administration of President Donald Trump, who rejects the Paris agreement, would seek to block any advances seen as counter to American interests. In the end,

The father of one of the UCLA basketball players arrested on suspicion of shoplifting while on tour in China isn´t praising President Donald Trump for his involvement in their release. When asked by ESPN what role the president played in brokering his son´s freedom, LaVar Ball — a former basketball player himself and star on the Facebook reality series "Ball in the Family" — responded with his own questions. "Who? What was he over there for? Don´t tell me nothing," Ball said. "Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out." Ball in EPSN´s report on Saturday also downplayed

Democrats certainly don’t appear to have an issue with using fear to fundraise. A Senate Majority PAC mailer with an enclosed letter from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tied together the Kremlin and neo-Nazis with corporate tax cuts. “This Must Stop,” the mailer says above the words, “Corporate Tax Cuts. Discrimination. Kremlin. Medicaid Cuts. Bribes. Repealing Health Care. Neo-Nazis.” The previously unreported letter was obtained by TheDC on Friday. Schumer claimed in it that Trump is turning his back on America in order to help Russia and “billionaire backers.” “Well, the president wasn’t elected to represent Moscow; he was elected to represent the

John Greenleaf Whittier´s poem of The Barefoot Boy with "turned up pantaloons" and "health that mocks the doctor´s rules" may have once symbolized carefree youth but anyone who actually lets his offspring do this today would probably be charged with child abuse. For better or worse modern "helicopter parents" now frown on tree climbing, unsupervised river swims or risky activity. Perhaps as a consequence a Scientific American article says "that since around 2000, teens have become considerably less likely to drive, have an after-school job and date. MIAMI On probation for a bloody 1999 gang murder, Miguel Valdes takes a host of pills to keep his longtime schizophrenia in check. Now, he can also legally use another medicine — marijuana, a drug that normally would get a convicted killer locked up for violating probation. A Miami judge, over fierce objections from prosecutors, allowed the 34-year-old Valdes to ingest the herb after he was approved to take part in Florida´s fledgling medical marijuana program. The State Attorney´s office argued that Valdes didn´t need the drug — which he was smoking when he and another man used a tire iron and a

Cosa Nostra´s "boss of bosses," who was serving 26 life sentences as the convicted mastermind of dozens of murders of rivals for power on his Sicilian turf as well as prominent anti-Mafia heroes, died Friday in an Italian hospital prison ward. Salvatore "Toto" Riina´s passing, a day after his 87th birthday, is likely to trigger a scramble for power among Mafia clans in Palermo, the traditional hub of the crime syndicate´s leadership. Nicknamed "the beast" for his ferocity, Riina leaves behind a significantly weakened Cosa Nostra after his ferocious killing campaign eventually backfired, triggering a fierce government crackdown aided by a small

Watching Roy Moore go through the current media circus has made me fear for the future of these men whom I love. Imagine: even the New York Times’ Ross Douthat now thinks that Bill Clinton should have stepped down over the Monica Lewinsky affair. Douthat’s mea culpa op-ed in this past weekend’s paper, in which he confesses that he and others may have been wrong to dismiss Bill Clinton’s indefensible behavior, will serve as the official political obituary for Clinton, Inc. Hillary Clinton is done, finished, kaput. Dogged by scandals old and new, out of step politically, her excess baggage has morphed into an entire baggage train, dragging her towards political oblivion. While it is refreshing to consider the landscape unadorned by Clintons,

A federal judge on Monday permanently blocked President Trump’s executive order to cut funding from so called “sanctuary cities.” Trump’s order would have removed some federal funds from cities that limit their cooperation with U.S. immigration authorities. U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick rejected the Trump administration’s argument that the measure only applies to a relatively small pool of money. Orrick also said that Trump cannot set fresh conditions on spending that Congress has previously approved. Monday’s ruling came in lawsuits brought by two California counties, Santa Clara and San Francisco.

Brooklyn College is kowtowing to cop-hating students by directing officers who need a bathroom break to the broken-down facilities in a building on the far edge of campus. Without equating the severity of the alleged offenses (Moore’s are obviously worse), I’ve been struck by the extent to which people across the political spectrum will tolerate misconduct in politicians that they’d never, ever tolerate in their own workplaces. In most functioning corporations, if there’s pictorial evidence that a senior executive groped a woman, then that executive is forced to resign. If there are known, credible allegations that an applicant for a senior
