Menendez trial in turmoil as jurors

NEWARK -- Seven of the 16 jurors and alternates in the trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez raised their hands when U.S. District Judge William Walls on Monday morning asked whether they´d heard or read anything about the case, prompting the judge to take them into his chambers individually to get more details. The inquiry came after defense attorneys in the trial noted that widespread news coverage of an excused juror´s public statements may have tainted the remaining members of the panel. The defense said they were concerned about statements made to the press by Evelyn Arroyo-Maultsby on Thursday after she was

It saddens me to say I´ve lost faith in jury trials. If you´re a minority, it seems, all it takes is one minority on the jury to get a not guilty verdict when evidence is overwhelming.

This juror is saying, according to this article, that she was the only one that was voting not guilty for Menendez. I has heard previously that most were for not guilty and only a few were voting guilty.

Mistrial? Seems like would be a win for Menendez.

When millions are at stake, or celebrities are on trial, juries of common people get flummoxed and insecure. They build up the defendant into a God-like figure and then they go wobbly for no reason what-so-ever except imagined possibilities. They are only people. They feel small and vulnerable. Even though the movie "12 Angry Men" was an absurdity, it is worth watching again. They let a perfectly guilty person walk all because of fake evidence illegally introduced into the jury room and failed to deliver justice because of their own prejucides and self doubts.

Having served on two criminal cases juries, one both as Jury Foreman ond one a death penalty case, I can say from my experience the jurors invovled have absolutely nothing in commmon with the sterotypes mentioned. They took their job seriously and there was considerable and productive debate. And just because a jury member is black doesn´t mean they vote based on color. I didn´t witness anything of the sort. Placing common, untrained people on juries is placing huge burden on those individuals chosen. However, I would much rather take my chances with true jurors of my peers than professional (and easily corruptible) jurors. Is the system perfect, no. But serving on a jury is the only responsiblity the Constitution grants where common citizens have a direct say on the outcome of a goobernment process. It is the ultimate check and balance.

Sadly I agree with #14. Judge Nep on F&F this AM spelled out potential reasons for mis-trial, mostly the actions of the judge, i.e., precise daily quitting times, no Friday court, and this in spite of the fact he knew about the jurors vacation plans. Why let her on the jury in the first place if you were just gonna let her leave before finishing? Pick folks who are there for the duration. As to the quality of jurors, many are just no-loads who are not smart enough to have a reason to get dismissed. My peers, Meh? Menendez walks...justice served? Not!

I recall hearing the late Justice Scalia interviewed about jury trials vs. bench trials, where a judge determines the facts and renders a decision. He said that if he were charged with a crime and innocent, he´d prefer a bench trial; if he were guilty, he´d opt for a jury trial. ´Nuff said.

Having served on many juries in both civil and criminal cases, I´ve seen misconduct by jurors that almost set my hair on fire. A lot of jurors refuse to follow clearly stated instructions from the trial judge. Twice I´ve threatened to summon the bailiff, and both times the miscreants backed down. One juror in a trial for a robbery kept yammering about the film "Twelve Angry Men." Great film, and a terrible standard to set.

Back in the day, Google famously adopted the corporate motto, “Don’t be evil.” It hasn’t turned out so well. The problem is that their motto didn’t define what constitutes evil, so it left an opening for narrow-minded zealots to commandeer company resources in a witch hunt against whatever they define as the forces of wickedness. That’s what has happened at Google, which has adopted a corporate culture of quasi-totalitarian ideological uniformity that it is now starting to impose on everyone who uses its services. Which is, let’s face it, pretty much everyone. For now. Google’s internal culture has been laid bare by

Yesterday, writing about former president Obama’s hack remark to David Letterman about the absence of “a common baseline of facts” shared by Americans, I asked whether Obama really is as shallow a thinker as he appears to be. It was not a rhetorical question. To be sure, Obama has failed to display appreciable depth since he wrote his fictionalized autobiography, Dreams From Father. His signature pronouncements and phrases are banal and borrowed. “The audacity of hope,” borrowed from his spiritual mentor the Reverend Wright. “Just words,” lifted from Deval Patrick. “You didn’t build that,” the obnoxious contribution of Elizabeth Warren. “Right

President Trump likes to do "yuge" things: tall hotels, massive walls, big deals. Congress, meanwhile, tends to make bills more complex as parochial interests and powerful lobbies tack their favored provisions on to bills as they move through the Capitol. For any immigration bill, these habits would be fatal. Congress and Trump should pass a small immigration deal, resisting any push for “comprehensive" immigration reform. In fact, the House bill probably already has too much clutter. The White House’s press release generally supporting the bill sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., noted only four provisions: “The president looks forward

The main thrust of the argument against the president’s remarks, which were reported first by the Washington Post and the New York Times, is not that he used naughty language, but that he suggested immigrants from poorer countries are somehow subpar to immigrants from wealthier, predominantly white countries. Lots of the news from sub-Saharan Africa is about war, famine, poverty or political upheaval. So it’s understandable if many Americans think most Africans who immigrate to the United States are poorly educated and desperate. Research tells another story. While many are refugees, large numbers are beneficiaries of the diversity-visa program aimed at boosting immigration from underrepresented nations. And on average, African immigrants are better educated than people born in the U.S. or the immigrant population as a whole.
