UCLA basketball team leaves China,

The UCLA basketball players arrested for allegedly shoplifting a pair of sunglasses in a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou, China have been left behind to face the tender mercies of Chinese justice. Perhaps we should send all of our NFL teams and NBA teams over to China for a week and let them keep the ones who probably shouldn’t be roaming free anyway.

I know nothing about the background of these three individuals except that they, apparently, were never taught that stealing is wrong.

If they get out of China, we can pretty much bet that, if they are gifted athletes, they will face no further consequences for their actions.

Oh, this makes we happy. Didn´t hear of any of the "fake news" questioners dare to ask President Trump about these thugs (not "kids"). One thing to ponder. If they were that stupid to try to steal from a major vendor (store) in China, what have tried before to embolden them to do so, and where? A little "questioning" by them Chinese legal system just might fill in those blanks that this wasn´t an desolated offense at attempt at robbery there and elsewhere.

They need to be punished. To allow this to pass with no direct punishment would only feed fuel to the fire that permitted them to do it in the first place. To not pay for their crime will make it a joke and these men will laugh it off and continue with their ways. I am of hope that PT did not mention it. It is a matter for China. They do not deserve our support.

This could go very badly, very quickly and very bigly. However, since China is not NK and the Chinese are trying to curry favor with Pres. Trump, I do not expect harsh penalties will be handed down.

But I wouldn´t mind seeing those idiot athletes spend 30 days in a Chinese detention center either.

The Chinese are obsessed with basketball. This experience makes it much less likely that American college or professional teams will visit China. I expect the players will be quietly returned to the States - they will forfeit quite a bit of this season and they won´t make public statements other than to say they were treated kindly in China. And that is probably a fair outcome.

Lifson: In China university professors are held to a high standard themselves and are expected to teach the same high standards to their students.

What Chinese justice deserves, and should demand in return for letting off the students with a warning, is a public formal apology from the head of the University of California for failing to prepare the students for their responsibility as representatives of a world-famous university. That would be Janet Napolitano.

In the old days before the Chinese Revolution, such an apology would involve the penitent individual kneeling on the ground and bending the head forward to the point it touches the ground, the infamous “kowtow” as Westerners called it. While I would pay cash money to see Janet Napolitano grovel that way, I doubt that the Chinese would go that far.

I could supply popcorn. (Does anyone LIKE Napolitano? She hasn’t done a thing for the university but spend money and draw bad press.)

These black athletes knew it was wrong to steal, but they did it anyway. This is the direct consequences of refusal to change their social pattern of behavior from the past. Now if it´s in their DNA to steal, then their Chinese husband in prison can fix that through months of physical counseling.

I would not mind seeing the Chinese do a modified *scared straight* style rehab for these boys. Maybe, just maybe, if the tough love treatment works, they might get a sudden change of attitude and come out of it better young men for it.

As to Trump, since he is president of everyone in this country, I am sure he probably is aware of this situation, and if he needs to step in, he will. This will not be another replay of Obama, where American citizens get ignored and left to the whims of fate.

For those of you who do not know, LiAngelo Ball is the second of three very talented brothers, whose father´s opinion of their talent and marketability exceeds even their tremendous talent. The eldest is currently a highly touted rookie in the NBA. To some degree they are to basketball what the Manning brothers were to football. All three probably have the talent and training to be NBA players with long careers. Depending on how this works out, LiAngelo may have just forfeited that opportunity.

Going to a foreign country--especially a totalitarian one--and breaking the law is double measures ignorant and stupid. Three obvious non-Chinese, all standing between 6´5" and 6´11", are certain to be noticed in a retail establishment. Is petty thievery irresistible to them? Are they used to doing the same with impunity in Los Angeles?

The Chinese won´t ship them back to America brain dead as Little Rocket Man did to Otto Warmbier, but they might have forfeited a basketball season and a semester, if the Chinese don´t decide to make examples of them.

Want to hear something even more stupid? Back in the late ´70s an acquaintance--not friend--of a close friend took a boat to Colombia, hoping to bring back a ton of marijuana and some cocaine. After making their pickup in Barranquilla, their boat strayed into Cuban territorial waters, where they were arrested. After three years in Fidel´s five-star accommodations, Jesse Jackson appealed to Fidel, and they were released. If that hadn´t happened, they´d probably still be there.

Why California is the

An excellent op-ed in the LA Times today by Kerry Jackson on why California - with its liberal politics and generous welfare system - is the "poverty capital of America." (snip) From 1992 to 2015, state and local governments spent nearly $1 trillion to help the poor. The state, with 12% of the American population, is home today to about one in three of the nation’s welfare recipients. Jackson then reaches the not so astonishing conclusion: "The generous spending, then, has not only failed to decrease poverty; it actually seems to have made it worse." One of the big reasons for this

It´s a shocking claim made by a political insider: the Deep State is so opposed to draining the swamp that it will, if necessary, kill President Trump to prevent it. Roger Stone, a longtime Trump adviser and confidant, certainly knows his way around Washington, having worked as a senior campaign aide to Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Senator Bob Dole as well as having held many other political positions. Lots of the news from sub-Saharan Africa is about war, famine, poverty or political upheaval. So it’s understandable if many Americans think most Africans who immigrate to the United States are poorly educated and desperate. Research tells another story. While many are refugees, large numbers are beneficiaries of the diversity-visa program aimed at boosting immigration from underrepresented nations. And on average, African immigrants are better educated than people born in the U.S. or the immigrant population as a whole.
