Training in sport plane comes
under scrutiny following
death of pitcher Halladay

Tampa Bay Times, by Tony Marrero

TAMPA — Spirits were soaring last year when an airplane manufacturer named ICON opened its new flight center at Peter O. Knight Airport. At a grand opening on a clear November day, guests gawked at the company´s new A5 airplane and company executives gushed about the location . They were marketing their product as a Jet Ski with wings and their new second home in Tampa was surrounded by water. "If I were to actually take a clean slate and design a flying environment for us, it looks about like this," company chief executive Kirk Hawkins said at the time. "This is

Comments:
The ICON isn´t much more than a pontoon boat with a propeller. Halladay appeared to be flying as close to the water as possible when his plane touched the water´s surface and violently flipped over. At speed the human body has the properties of a tomato. If you´re going to fly, get a real plane. And don´t skim the water unless you´re a pelican, which is designed for flying one inch odd the water.

Apparently he was playing around doing dives and then pulling up at around five feet above the water. Not good. I´m told this plane has a type of black box so we will learn more.

I think there was another accident where the pilot got himself stuck in a blind canyon and his desperate attempt to turn around failed. One of his wings hit the canyon wall. These aircraft are not toys. The government is liable to ground them until they complete an investigation.

FTA: ´Man, I would love to learn to fly if you made it easy, you made it safe, you made it fun, you made it cool — sign me up,´ "Hawkins, a former fighter pilot, told the Times last year.
Three-fourth´s of that statement is a recipe for disaster. Flying isn´t a game. The first classmate I lost in a flying accident crashed his T37 upside down in his uncle´s field. He apparently bought into the "cool" and "fun" part.

Flying near stationary objects is a fun rush, it gives you the feeling that is often shown in movies, classic example is starfighters down in the slot on the Death Star. Fun, thrilling, no doubt.

And completely, totally unforgiving of even the slightest error or miscalculation. The designer of this aircraft died flying low, got into a canyon that tightened up, too steep to climb out, too tight to turn around - dead. Similar stuff cavorting low over the water. Thousands have died doing stupid low level stunting, it is purely pilot error.

A tip, if one feels the need to zip by stationary things to get the feel of speed and to maneuver next to things - try a cloud, they don´t hurt if you screw up and hit one. It is illegal to do by FAA regulations, but a whole lot safer than canyon flying or low level semiaerobatics by beginner pilots.

And get some aerobatic instruction before you go past the legal levels of a 30 degree bank. Learn how to do the maneuvers from an instructor, save your life.

A pilot with a nice new license is safe in basic maneuvers, capable of safely taking off and landing. There is still a lot to learn, and a prudent person learns to walk before running.

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

I would attribute all of the described crashes to pilot error.

Not a pilot but years of flying drones have taught me that the aircraft does exactly what you tell it to do and sometimes faster than you expect. The more sporty the design the faster the reaction.

That also goes for driving expensive Porsches at 90 mph on the street. The car doesn´t crash the driver does.

Juan Brown video (link above) nails it. Many times we see a mixture of lots of cash, celebrity, belief in invincibility, liquid courage bravado and insufficient education as a precursor to these life-ending accidents. a few years ago a young dare-devil got her pilots license and went totally out of control buzzing her neighbors, flying under power lines, doing low-level loops and doing sloppy aerobatics. That was her last flight. Fortunately only the airplane got destroyed and she went to jail and her passenger got grounded.

Al Franken is a well-known jerk. I would say that just about everyone who has dealt with him personally knows it, including Senator Amy Klobuchar and his other Senate colleagues. One can see the pure manifestation of this aspect of his character in his treatment of Leeann Tweeden as set forth in her powerful first-person account of his unwanted attention. Franken has issued two statements in response to Tweeden’s account today. First he offered a cursory attempt at exculpation. As his colleagues abandoned him, Franken sensed he couldn’t talk his way out of this jam. He abjectly apologized and joined the

ST. PETERSBURG — What does disgraced Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein have to do with the city’s fight against the influence of money in politics? Believe it or not, there is a connection. Last month the City Council approved an ordinance limiting the amount an individual can give a political action committee in a single year to $5,000. It could serve as a vehicle for challenging the Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission decision. The historic 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling removed restrictions on how much outside groups can spend on elections. Two weeks ago, City Council chairwoman Darden Rice touted the offer

The Trump administration’s Justice Department is inching toward a full investigation of possible corruption in Hillary Clinton’s dealings with Russia as secretary of state — with Republican lawmakers urging a focus on her campaign as well. Senate Republicans coupled its tax-reform bill with a massive budget cut. The House of Representatives would be wise to follow suit. The Senate majority leader and the Senate finance committee endorsed Senator Tom Cotton’s proposal to include a repeal of Obamacare’s individual mandate alongside tax cuts. This either kills two birds with one stone or that one stone sinks the tax plan because of its weight. If Senator Bob Corker issued his complaints last month regarding deficit reduction in earnest, one guesses that the former occurs.
