Arrest of 3 UCLA basketball players
in China could complicate
Trump’s deal-making

A day before Donald Trump arrived in Beijing for crucial talks, China arrested 3 prominent African-American athletes. It would be awful if this became a racial issue today back home. A new element could be introduced into the deal-making at the heart of presidential mission to East Asia, and these youths have a following. They all have head shots from UCLA (snip) If the Chinese wish to use this incident for bargaining leverage (and why wouldn’t they?), they could exchange lenient treatment of the matter, as an “administration violation,” which sounds non-criminal. But either way, the 3 men can be

Way to go, boys! 3 to 10 for stealing a bunch of ugly crap. How stupid do you have to be?

As for the school, don´t they teach them "You´re in a foreign country, nobody there cares how popular or important you are at home"? Seems like every year, this happens with some college football team or other, when they go to a bowl game.

If guilty, convict them. UCLA needs to expel them, but how much would you bet this bastion of Leftist academia will do the right thing.

Doesn’t complicate anything for Trump. California doesn’t deserve anything from Trump.

Thugs will be thugs no matter where they are. It is incomprehensible that they would try this in any foreign country let alone China.

I wonder what would happen if they went to Saudi, Iraq, Syria, etc. There might be no coming back for them at all.

Did you look at their photos? Can you imagine the attention they attracted in China? (In my case, it was blue eyes - many had never seen a blue-eyed person) They had to be on everyone’s radar from the moment they entered the store.

Don’t know what they’re like, but Ball’s father thinks he is a god so I imagine he’s instilled that in his kids as well. An obnoxious self- and son-promoter. His kids are his pots of gold.

This should have no affect on President Trump’s state visit to China. Can’t say it won’t here, though, as this kind of thing can cause riots in a nanosecond.

Good point, Poster 8. According to the UCLA roster, LiAngelo Ball is 6´5". The other two are listed as 6´10". All three are handsome. Clearly they have presence everywhere they go, especially in a country where the average male height is less than 5´6".

FTA: "They weren´t messing around," the source told ESPN. "The kids were scared."

The "fake" source must have been one of the American "adults" (coaches) with these thugs. Calling them "kids" is an affront to the Chinese people who live under their repressive system and "know" better than to act out this foolishly. To even consider them for release before they have been tried would be wrong.

The girls in the article below all got up to 1 year in prison, only because they were underage.

There are few places left in the world that you can go into a store, steal items, and then just figure that when you are caught there would not be consequences. In the modern world it might mean a jail term, in the Middle East they could chop off your fingers or hand, and in some primitive countries you could be dead. In China a repeat thief could end up morphing into an organ donor. Those UCLA basketball players have to be pretty dumb as anyplace in China they would by their appearance stand out bigtime will all eyes aimed at them.

There is no reason for President Trump to get involved in this matter that involves three petty thieves, as the President’s mission is to ultimately stop the Kim Dynasty in North Korea from gaining the capability of firing a nuclear weapon into America and killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Americans that is much more important.

"I think the University of California needs to examine what travel orientation or training, if any, was given to these kids being sent into an intense and alien culture."

First off, these "kids" are generally kept in a bubble surrounding their events. They were hardly exposed to "an intense and alien culture" - a Louis Vuitton shop next to the hotel? Stealing is stealing, isn´t it?

In my experience, the Chinese are kindly folk. On my visits there I have often been approached for photos by adults and kids alike, and always very politely. (Yes, I am significantly larger than the average Chinese.) I have never felt threatened there by anyone staring at me. I certainly have never felt the urge to steal as a result.

I suspect the situation will be fixed by the Chinese sponsors of UCLA´s basketball adventure. Money talks, and this is not a low budget deal. The Chinese, big NBA basketball fans, don´t need the hassle, either. A substantial "fine", sincere apology, and out of the country ASAP...all a misunderstanding. Poor kid thought it was a "gift" he took. So sorry.

PDT needs to stay out of it and let the Chinese enforce their own laws. 10 years in a Chinese prison with no computers, no fitness center, no American food might teach them a thing or two about gratitude and some appreciation of their country.

I don´t want anyone to be subjected to the tortures of any totalitarian regime.

It wasn´t that long ago that the beaten, abused body of Otto Warmbier, barely alive... not really alive... was returned to the USA. He had stolen a poster from a wall (wondering, though, why on earth did he accept the invitation from some commie youth league to visit NORK-land).

If they did steal things, they ought to go through some sort of "legal" process. Remember the American teenager who ended up getting caned in Indonesia?

Maybe the Chinese could teach these young men some lessons about the rest of the world, where they´d never have to stand for the National Anthem again.

In a new low point for the Cable News Network, CNN Reliable Sources’ host Brian Stelter welcomed MMFA president Angelo Carusone for a live, in-studio, softball interview on why Hannity should be forced to go. Stelter is no friend of Hannity, who has the #1 talk show on cable news. (snip) It was advertisers deserting O’Reilly’s show that cost him his job. Carusone is

Friendship is a beautiful thing, and it´s really good to know that Robert Mueller, Comey, Brennan, and Clapper have known each other for many years. They´re loyal friends. Mueller is a former top FBI dude, who helped to clear Bill Clinton after that impeachment mess, and like Mr. Comey, he did his very best. Clapper was the single most powerful man in the "intelligence" "community," a centralized directorate (as the Soviets used to call it), which was George W. Bush´s principal response to 9/11/01. Now don´t get me wrong: I´m sure all these brave men (or persons, I should say) made great

The irony. So rich it could give you gout. At a fundraiser on September 9, 2016, Hillary Clinton made a soul-baring gaffe. With uncharacteristic candor, she stated that half of all Trump supporters are a "basket of deplorables," that they´re "irredeemable," as well as "racist, sexist homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic – you name it." Naturally, with her epic lack of self-awareness (see What Happened book tour, 2017) and a blind spot about herself that rivals a covered wagon´s, she said this adjacent to a banner pimping her slogan, "Stronger Together." Because Hillary Clinton is all about the unifying. I checked. Page 1 of How to

Al Franken’s career is collateral damage

That sinking feeling Al Franken is experiencing is the realization that his career is now a pawn in the fanatical efforts of Democrats to get President Trump out of office. The Democrats would not lose his seat, since Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton can be expected to appoint a Democrat to serve out his term. Franken is not well liked for reasons that should be self-evident: he is as big a jerk in regular life as the infamous picture of him and Ms. Tweeden on the C17 would seem to indicate. The logical steps for getting Trump are clear: Step one, establish

Budding Hollywood actresses do not have to rely on semi-naked fat dudes in expensive hotels for acting tips. Not anymore. Real-life examples of real-life emotions such as despair, abandonment, anguish, and betrayal are easy to find if you know where to look – e.g., local stories of black-on-white violence. Let´s start with some backstory in Chicago. During last year´s election for the Chicago version of district attorney, Kim Foxx was not hiding anything. With loads of cash from George Soros and lots of support from Black Lives Matter, she bragged about how, under her watch, she was going to stop over-policing, halt

It is worth noting that when he went overseas as a USO performer accompanied by Leann Tweeden in December 2006, Al Franken was not professionally identified as a “comedian” – as virtually every current media account has branded him. He was preparing for a run for political office by conducting the flagship program for Air America, the vanguard of the Left’s plan to deprive conservatives of their talk radio dominance. Am I the only person who remembers what a huge and embarrassing fiasco that was? It is not surprising that the mainstream media have consigned it to the memory hole,

Malia Obama appears to be settling in just fine at Harvard. On Saturday, former President Obama´s eldest daughter was caught making out with a handsome fellow Crimson fan at the annual Harvard-Yale game. Yale hosted this year´s face off, which saw Harvard students decamping down to New Haven to tailgate at their rival´s campus before the game. The 19-year-old former first daughter, who took a gap year before starting at Harvard this fall, was seen locking lips with a mystery man at the festivities outside of the Yale Bowl. Video shows the moment Malia reached up and put her arms

Imagine: even the New York Times’ Ross Douthat now thinks that Bill Clinton should have stepped down over the Monica Lewinsky affair. Douthat’s mea culpa op-ed in this past weekend’s paper, in which he confesses that he and others may have been wrong to dismiss Bill Clinton’s indefensible behavior, will serve as the official political obituary for Clinton, Inc. Hillary Clinton is done, finished, kaput. Dogged by scandals old and new, out of step politically, her excess baggage has morphed into an entire baggage train, dragging her towards political oblivion. While it is refreshing to consider the landscape unadorned by Clintons,

A federal judge on Monday permanently blocked President Trump’s executive order to cut funding from so called “sanctuary cities.” Trump’s order would have removed some federal funds from cities that limit their cooperation with U.S. immigration authorities. U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick rejected the Trump administration’s argument that the measure only applies to a relatively small pool of money. Orrick also said that Trump cannot set fresh conditions on spending that Congress has previously approved. Monday’s ruling came in lawsuits brought by two California counties, Santa Clara and San Francisco.

Over the last few days, I’ve had a number of conversations with both right- and left-leaning friends about the political futures of Al Franken and Roy Moore. Without equating the severity of the alleged offenses (Moore’s are obviously worse), I’ve been struck by the extent to which people across the political spectrum will tolerate misconduct in politicians that they’d never, ever tolerate in their own workplaces. In most functioning corporations, if there’s pictorial evidence that a senior executive groped a woman, then that executive is forced to resign. If there are known, credible allegations that an applicant for a senior

Rep. John Conyers, newly facing sexual misconduct charges from former aides, was praised by fellow Rep. Maxine Waters just last month as a champion of women. A second federal judge has halted the Trump administration’s proposed transgender military ban, finding that active-duty service members are “already suffering harmful consequences” because of the president’s policy. The ruling Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Marvin J. The preliminary injunction issued by the judge in Baltimore on Tuesday goes further than the

If it is possible for a man, as he´s being hauled in front of a judge for his arraignment, to somehow still project an air of haughty superiority, well, that man would look like Rene Boucher did as he appeared in court just over a week ago. A retired anesthesiologist, Boucher—who stands accused of a bizarre beating earlier this month that left his neighbor, the Kentucky senator Rand Paul, with six broken ribs—strode into the jammed courtroom wearing a well-pressed blue suit. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Former U.S. President Bill Clinton visited Puerto Rico on Monday and met with those left homeless after Hurricane Maria hit the U.S. territory as a Category 4 storm. Clinton arrived with medical supplies and solar energy equipment donated by the Clinton Foundation, which has already shipped 76 tons of medicine and medical equipment since the storm hit on Sept. 20. Clinton also visited health clinics and the island’s largest shelter with Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello. He planned to meet with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and other officials later Monday. Rossello said Clinton’s visit will help
