Bain Capital Surprisingly Seen

For Bain Capital Private Equity, distress has come to five of the leveraged buyout deals it made in the early 2000s, but the private equity firm´s finances are likely to weather any fallout just fine. The year started out with the bankruptcy filing of Gymboree Corp. and is wrapping up with the Chapter 11 of Toys "R" Us Inc. -- Bain investments from 2010 and 2005, respectively. Three other Bain companies, Guitar Center Inc., TOMS Shoes Inc. and iHeartMedia Inc., are each experiencing distressed financials, according to ratings agencies. Privately-held Bain declined to comment on whether these investments have had or could

Over six years of voting in the General Assembly, Republican Rep. Rick Saccone garnered perhaps the most public attention for his support of legislation promoting Christian values. Saccone, the Republican Party´s newly selected nominee for a March special election to represent the 18th Congressional District, promoted bills that would have allowed schools to display the national motto, “In God We Trust,” and would have declared 2012 to be “The Year of the Bible.” In a speech following his nomination Saturday, Saccone, who represents the 39th legislative district covering parts of Allegheny and Washington counties, pledged that if elected to Congress he would

Mitt Romney is edging closer to a 2018 Senate run. The former GOP presidential nominee is huddling with Utah’s class of GOP power brokers, contacting the state’s major political donors, and hitting the trail for candidates running in local races amid mounting speculation that the state’s longtime senator, Orrin Hatch, will retire. Romney is also raising money for House and Senate Republicans, winning him favor with GOP leaders ahead of a treacherous midterm election.

Presidential candidates have been doing it for years. They raise money and explore their viability long before they announce they’re running. And that practice is increasingly trickling down to the House and Senate level. The latest example comes from the Montana Senate race, where Republican candidate Russell Fagg won’t have to disclose any of the money he’s raised until January — seven months after he formed his exploratory committee for Senate this summer.

Lawmakers put the finishing touches this week on military funding legislation that contains a provision that stands to significantly benefit Amazon. The amendment, Section 801 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), would help Amazon establish a tight grip on the lucrative, $53 billion government acquisitions market, experts say. The provision, dubbed the “Amazon amendment” by experts, according to an article in The Intercept, would allow for the creation of an online portal that government employees could use to purchase everyday items such as office supplies or furniture.

The Senate unanimously confirmed on Thursday John Raymond Lausch Jr. to be the next top federal prosecutor in Chicago — a city President Donald Trump has singled out for blistering criticism because of its struggles to curb violent crime. Lausch, 47, will officially become the new U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois when Trump signs his commission. The president is traveling in Asia, so it is not known when he will sign the paperwork — a formality at this point.

What has the world come to when even bourbon gets caught up in politics? (Actually, don´t answer that.) Over the weekend, bourbon brand Jim Beam got dragged into the fight over women´s rights after its spokeswoman, actress Mila Kunis, revealed that she´s been sending monthly donations to Planned Parenthood in Vice President Mike Pence´s name. See, Kunis doesn´t agree with Pence´s non-wavering stance against abortion rights. And as a guest on TBS´s "Conan," she told host Conan O´Brien that she chose to voice her disagreement by adding his name to a list of recurring donations made to the women´s health care provider.

Kristol was a staunch critic of candidate Trump prior to the election and continues to be critical of a president he has said is not qualified for the office he holds. What emerged Friday was an optimism in the country and its institutions, and a call for more action by conservatives. He also offered his

The United States has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. If you want to know why so many U.S. companies go through “inversions” (setting up new corporate headquarters in other countries), there’s your answer. Why pay 35 percent of your net earnings when you can pay a much lower rate elsewhere? So the long-overdue proposal released Thursday to reduce the corporate tax rate to 20 percent is one of the most important economic developments this country has seen in a very long time. It’s part of a much larger Republican proposal, and there’s plenty of time to

George W. Bush earned a series of softly fawning headlines in October when he delivered a speech critical of Donald Trump. While the speech itself didn´t have anything particularly groundbreaking in it—immigration isn´t a bad thing and cruelty is—it was praised as a "smackdown" and left some people yearning for the long-gone Bush years. Which of course is part of the point. George W. Bush left office if not disgraced then close to it, amidst a financial crisis and disastrous wars spreading across the Middle East. Now with an even more reviled in the Oval Office, he has the chance to

On the anniversary of Donald Trump´s victory, many conservatives were delighted watching the outrageous video meltdowns of the leftwing media. They should be afraid rather than amused. The anger and disappointment over Hillary Clinton´s 2016 loss is not only unprecedented, it´s inexplicable. These are supposedly intelligent, educated professionals and yet their anguish has in some cases turned to unbridled hatred towards the voters who dared to think for themselves. We have been labeled deplorable, moronic, racists and despicable even though these so-called failed political prognosticators have no idea who we really are.

Sessions´ contemplation comes after the House Judiciary Chairman urged him to look into Comey´s handling of the FBI´s investigation into Clinton´s email use, the 2010 Uranium One deal, and the Clinton Foundation. Trump has repeatedly called Sessions a "weak" attorney general and pushed him to investigate Clinton and the Democrats as the FBI investigates Trump and his campaign for possible collusion with Moscow during the 2016
