The new battle of the Alamo: Conflict

A plan to quadruple the size of the Alamo with a major restoration project has been attacked by conservatives over worries its history will be sanitized. At a time when Confederate statues are being removed across the country, some Texans are fearing the battle site will become the latest victim of ´political correctness´. Land Commissioner George P. Bush - son of former Florida governor Jeb - is overseeing a 7-year revamp of the shrine where 189 Texas independence fighters were killed by Mexican Gen. Santa Anna´s troops in 1836. The site´s size would quadruple after excavation and restoration of historical

Travis had his slave, Joe, with him at the Alamo. The Mexicans let Joe live, probably a lot like Mel Brooks´ character let Sheriff Bart´s family go after the Indian attack. But the fact that a slave was at the battle will end any chances of non-political correctness.

Putting a Bush in charge of the restoration virtually guarantees that it will be maximally PC.

That´s just plain sacrilege. They might as well just give it back to Mexico.

In 1976 on the way to the first Bing Crosby Intercollegiate at San Isidro Country Club outside Guadalajara (where Bing--I met him at the pool; nice, thoughtful man--had a house on the 17th or 18th hole; he died shortly after the 1977 tournament, which he did not attend), our Vanderbilt golf team stopped over half way in San Antonio. During the layover with our coach Jess Neely we visited the Alamo. I had seen the 1955 movie of my intrepid cousin David Crockett, played by John Wayne, and had read a history book or two, but until I got to the actual place, it didn´t mean as much to me. The older I get the more the knowledge of history means to me, not because I am more likely to be in it, but because I delight in people, and in the fact that they never seem to learn, except temporarily.

President Donald Trump´s occasional unfiltered coarse cloudbursts belie a man who is enormously joyful, having an abundance of entertaining good humor easily expressed, fairly shared. Trump is having a ball, for good reasons.Trump´s first year as president may have been the most extraordinary since the 1840s. While Trump has disrupted almost all presidential governance and communication norms, his tenure so far has produced capital market gains of some $7 trillion, spreading investment wealth to millions of regular Joes and Marys, while tax cuts have already distributed $3 billion in bonuses and wage hikes to over 2 million workers and counting.

As Congress and the White House go back to the drawing board on immigration, the administration took a hard line against compromise plans pushed by Senate moderates, and a new Harvard University poll backed up President Trump’s plan. As the budget shutdown ended, the White House made good on its promise to consider immigration reform. Six Republican senators met with the president to begin the negotiations, according to spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. But another spokesman decried a bipartisan compromise pushed by three senators not at the meeting, Sens. Lindsey Graham, Floyd Flake and Dick Durbin. “Their plan totally fails to secure

America’s federal government and its extra-legal Deep State have once again proven to be hopelessly corrupt with the news over the weekend that the FBI lost five months worth of text messages between Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.
