Young Sheldon and
the War Against Genius

My husband and I are huge fans of shows like The Big Bang Theory and Scorpion, so it’s no shock we’d enjoy the new spinoff Young Sheldon that premiered this fall on CBS (to return in November after football season). It’s refreshing to see gifted minds featured in fictional scenarios, whether for laughs or dramatic adventures, because we can relate to them. We were the nerds in school and we’re the geeks now, always intrigued by how new knowledge shapes the way we see and work in the world around us. Note, I say “we” because “nerd” and “geek” are

Couldn´t get past the first sentence. Anyone who admits to being a huge fan of those two shows can´t have much to say that would be of interest to me. I´ll bet she loves ´Two Broke Girls.´

Public schools fail gifted students because the education profession is composed of mediocre minds.
(That was my opinion as a public school student, and it remained my opinion when I was a professor, and occasionally had Education majors in class.)

The Big Smut Theory (my name for it) never had any appeal. Our daughter used to watch it, and the few minutes I saw were disgusting and unfunny. Sheldon? Please.

My Mensa club (which I very seldom attend) is filled with plumbers and brick layers....electricians and Ex-Cons. Most had the same experience in school. "Teachers" resent hard questions and get ugly in the presence of truly gifted students. Even worse for young, poor, conservative, males (like myself) who were (are) very interested in politics. The system weeds out gifted conservatives and they are brutal about it.

#2 nails it. As a bright student, I found a fabulous 3rd grade teacher who helped me control my boredom by sending me to do book reports in the library after I had completed my class work early, kept me out of trouble and engaged. A truly demented 5th grade teacher was a good negative example. By the 7th grade (thank you Sister Domina) I was learning to better channel my leftover time in class, and I had several great HS teachers who pushed me to do well.
I have tutored HS and Junior College students in the last few years and am not impressed with their teachers, and our suburban KS schools near KC are rated some of the top in the nation. I´d hate to see the results of the poor schools, because the kids I have tutored haven´t been taught by skilled teachers.

Bright kids cause problems, and are effectively punished for being bright much of the time by mediocre or worse teachers.

Among the many important periodicals that I don’t have time to read is Cigar Aficianado. I’ve been holding out for years for a companion glossy tabloid, Trophy Wife Aficionado, and long thought it was the perfect venture for Donald Trump, but he apparently had other ideas for his next career move. If someone made Trophy Wife Aficionado a package deal along with Marvin Shanken’s other glossy tabloid, The Wine Spectator (which I do read from time to time), then I’d sign up for the whole group. In any case, a sharp-eyed Power Line reader who is also a subscriber to Cigar

TAMPA — A 43-year-old Pinellas County man was sentenced Monday to spend 27 years in federal prison for a 2017 armed robbery that authorities said netted him a total of $374. That breaks down to $13.85 for every year Patrick D. Cummings faces in prison. A federal indictment said Cummings used a gun to rob a St. Petersburg Walgreens on March 24. He walked into the drug store after 4 a.m., pressed a black handgun against a cashier’s back and threatened to shoot her unless she gave him all the money in the register, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Tampa.

TAMPA — Two Tampa law firms are part of a nationwide effort to recover damages from pharmaceutical companies for states and local governments burdened by a rising tide of opioid overdoses. Hillsborough County already is a potential plaintiff. Tampa could sign on this week. The suit would be similar to the multi-state legal campaigns launched against Big Tobacco and BP after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. And the initiative is being led by former Mississippi attorney general Mike Moore, who in 1994 filed the first suit against cigarette makers over the public costs of treating disease caused by smoking. Readers may be vaguely aware that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and two other AGs filed suit again ExxonMobil alleging that “they knew” about climate change decades ago, but have been practicing “deception” ever since. These lawsuits all came with subpoena demands for thousands of pages of documents, no doubt hoping to turn up . . . what exactly? This is a transparent attempt to turn policy disagreements into legal culpability. In fact there is considerable evidence that this legal action was part of a political strategy hit upon by environmentalists to replicate the experience of tobacco litigation. ExxonMobil has

The Cold War for all its danger had the virtue of seeming definite. Once there was a well defined enemy located across a geographically specific battlefield on the eastern edge of Western Europe. There were ritual nuclear signals between the superpowers. By contrast the immediate future seems full of shadows. Some pundits say the world is on the threshold of Cold War II. Others despair of characterizing it at all. Perhaps the coming years will bring something totally new. Events have a clarity in hindsight that was not obvious at the time. The term "World War 1", for example, was coined

The Democrats are doing the same thing to Donald Trump that they did to Ronald Reagan–questioning his sanity, claiming he is senile and unstable, denying his fitness for office. There are two differences: the Democratic Party controls the press more monolithically today than it did durning the 1980s, and the Democrats hate Trump even more than they hated Reagan–something I never expected to see. In this crazed historical moment, Ambassador Nikki Haley is, as usual, a voice of sanity. She responds to George Stephanopoulos’s faux concerns about the president. Blue state governments are reeling following enactment of the tax reform bill, which among many other virtues, corrects an injustice: residents of low-tax states like South Dakota will no longer be forced to subsidize residents of high-tax states like New York. Or at least, not to the same extent. State and local taxes will still be deductible, up to $10,000. The Associated Press reports: “States exploring tax changes in response to federal overhaul.” In New Jersey and California, top Democratic officials want to let people make charitable contributions to the state instead of paying certain taxes. Sure, that’ll work. In Connecticut and New York,

Clinton Scandals: As the media focus on Donald Trump´s mental condition and whether he can be kicked out of office using the 25th Amendment, something far more significant is taking place: Former slam-dunk-future-first-woman-president Hillary Clinton, after avoiding any serious scrutiny for her misconduct while secretary of state, now sits at the center of a growing number of investigations — any of which might lead to a special counsel and criminal charges. ALBANY – Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo thinks he has a way to end run President Trump. If the president´s federal tax overhaul plan is going to hit thousands of New Yorkers with higher tax bills, then New York will circumvent Washington by rewriting part of its complex tax code, Cuomo reasons. But it’s not so easy. The basic premise of the still-evolving state plan, vaguely unveiled during Cuomo’s State of the State speech last week, is to sharply reduce the state’s reliance on income taxes that employees pay by starting a new, statewide payroll tax that employers would pay. Forget baby showers. There´s a proposal to give every newborn in the United States a Baby Bond account with somewhere between $500 and $50,000 in cash. Neither the kids nor their parents would be able to touch the money until the child turned 18. Then the young adult could spend the trust fund on attending college, buying a home or starting a business. The whole point of Baby Bonds would be to dramatically lessen wealth inequality in America, according to the economist who came up with the idea, Darrick Hamilton of The New School and William Darity of Duke University.
