Seen From Above: California Fires
Reduced Entire Communities to Ash

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — The charred ruins of hundreds of homes in Coffey Park stretched on for two-thirds of a mile, block after block, cul-de-sac after cul-de-sac. Cars had been flipped over, or knocked more than 100 feet away from their original parking spaces, residents here said. The fire may have sent appliances into the air too. In one home, residents found a stove they said belonged in another person’s home — and that that person’s stove was found in yet another home.

These WERE upscale homes and upscale lives. I cleaned up places like this two years ago when the wind driven fires whipped through Cobb Mountain and Middletown, just north of Napa County. The wind makes the fire two to three times hotter than a normal fire and melts whatever doesn´t burn. We were lucky to find a few dishes intact. Note to self: invest in things eternal, not stuff that burns up.

So far I´ve been lucky but the Redwood Complex is only about 5 miles away (fortunately going away but the same conditions exist around here, go-bag is ready)
the devastation has to be experienced to begin to comprehend

You may have seen them--brown, flat bugs crawling around your door and window frames. They’re stink bugs and bug experts say if you see a few now, you can expect many more as fall goes on. They’re brown and big, according to Ellen Zinsmeister, who had one in her bathtub. “Actually my daughter saw it. Who’s an adult, this is her son and she came running to get her dad,” Zinsmeister said. The creepy crawlers are brown marmorated stink bugs. If you’re seeing them now get ready.

Catalonian leader Carles Puigdemont claims the region has the right to claim independence from Spain after a reported 90 percent voted for independence in Sunday’s banned referendum. Puigdemont said the results, which are not recognized as valid by Spain, have paved the way for a unilateral declaration of independence. Regional leaders have previously stated that a declaration could be made within 48 hours of polls closing. “With this day of hope and suffering, the citizens of Catalonia have won the right to an independent state in the form of a republic,” Puigdemont said in an address to the nation. “My government, in

The television remote could become a thing of the past according to scientists who have developed a new technology that allows the device to be controlled through gestures instead. Computer scientists at Lancaster University have come up with a system that makes it possible interact with screens simply by using body movements, or waving objects. Requiring only a simple webcam, the "Matchpoint" works by displaying moving targets that orbit a small circular "widget" in the corner of the screen.

Sexual Harassment Charges

ROCHESTER — With its frosted glass windows, gleaming hardwood floors and modern teal chairs, the office of the University of Rochester’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences seems designed to project prestige. The sleek appearance fits the department’s reputation as one of this private university’s crown jewels, with a graduate program ranked as high as fourth in the nation by the National Research Council. But for the past year, the department has become the site of a fierce — and until recently, secretive — battle over allegations of repeated sexual harassment. The allegations have led to a federal discrimination complaint, the

SACRAMENTO – A bill approved in Assembly Appropriations this past week would expand free and reduced breakfast and lunch for hundreds of thousands of students on Medi-Cal. SB 138 – the “Feed the Kids Act” will address childhood hunger by removing a massive layer of bureaucratic red tape from the State school meal program enrollment process and by serving all students in very high poverty schools for free. The legislation would develop a universal enrollment process by ensuring that all school districts utilize Medi-Cal data to seamlessly enroll income-eligible students in free and reduced-price school meals. California has more children in poverty than

A pair of intrepid explorers have taken fascinating new images of one of the most closely-guarded US Army Bases of all time: supposed alien prison Area 51. Located out in the arid Nevada desert, Area 51 - a detachment of California´s Edwards Air Force Base - was founded in 1955 to test the Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance plane. Since then, however, it has become the subject of numerous UFO sightings and has become inextricably linked in the public´s mind with captive aliens and government conspiracies. Closed off to those without top-level security clearance, the site has largely remained a mystery -

Former President George W. Bush offered an unmistakable denunciation of Trumpism Thursday without mentioning the president by name, urging citizens to oppose threats to American democracy. “Bigotry seems emboldened. Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication,” Bush warned in remarks at the Bush Institute’s Spirit of Liberty event in New York. By chance, Bush was standing in the same spot at the Time Warner Center where former President Barack Obama made a similar plea for democracy and American leadership in late September, shortly after President Donald Trump had finished a belligerent, isolationist speech to the United Nations

Former President George W. Bush said Thursday that “bigotry seems emboldened” in the United States, warning that Americans need to reject “white supremacy.” The former president also criticized the “governing class,” but did not specifically mention President Trump, Congress or any other politicians in office. “Discontent deepened and sharpened partisan conflicts” in recent years, Bush said in remarks from New York City at a forum focused on security and sponsored by the George W. Bush Institute.

George W. Bush hinted Thursday at his dissatisfaction with Donald Trump, complaining in a New York City speech that ´bullying and prejudice´ has become a caustic norm in American public life. At an event hosted by the George W. Bush Institute, the 43rd U.S. president rattled off a thinly veiled litany of complaints about the current commander-in-chief, focusing on both his tone and his isolationist policy choices. ´Our young people need positive role models,´ he said. ´Bullying and prejudice in our public life sets a national tone, provides permission for cruelty and bigotry, and compromises the moral education of children.´

But Goodell said he would not commit to making a rule stating players must stand for the anthem. "Our players will state to you publicly they are not doing this in any way to be disrespectful to the flag," Goodell said. He said the league is "not looking to get into politics, but what

Damning new evidence appears to show that Hillary Clinton used her office as Secretary of State to confer benefits to Russia in exchange for millions of dollars in donations to her foundation and cash to her husband. But there’s more. It seems it was all covered up for years by the same three people who are now involved in the investigation of President Donald Trump over so-called Russian “collusion.” (Snip) What’s more, Holder was a member of the “Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States” which approved the uranium sale to the Russians in 2010.

A Massachusetts elementary school has canceled its Halloween events and is celebrating ´black and orange spirit day´ instead. Boyden Elementary School´s principal sent a letter to parents this week saying that it had decided to cancel its traditional Halloween parade on October 31 because it was ´not inclusive of all students´ and was ´difficult´ for many. Without specifying which students the parade excluded, Principal Brendan Dearborn said the school would instead hold a ´black and orange spirit day´.  Children are allowed to dress in those colors but cannot come to school in costume. The tale of Harvey Weinstein is now a thread that has tangled its way through Hollywood, connecting women, mostly actresses, in a depressingly common way. We all seem to have a Harvey story, each one a little different but with essentially the same nauseating pattern and theme. Women were bullied, cajoled, manipulated, and worse, and then punished. My Harvey story is different, mostly because of timing. I was in one of the first films that Weinstein produced. I accepted a supporting role in a small movie based on “Loser Takes All,” the short novel by Graham Greene. I was twenty years

For fark’s sake. The guy’s accused of rape, by more than one woman. What sort of behavior does she think “invited” that? Even his somewhat less egregious offenses are inexplicable in terms of an invitation. Does anyone think Lauren Sivan put out the vibe upon meeting famous Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein that she was hoping to watch him furtively whack it into a potted plant in a dark corner of an empty restaurant kitchen? The more aggressive harassment is, the harder it is to explain in terms of a misconstrued female “invitation.” Actual assault is plainly indefensible, yet here’s Eddie
