Sen. Ben Sasse doubts Trump’s
commitment to First Amendment
after recent anti-media remarks

President Trump’s recent comments about potentially revoking broadcasting licenses from network news outlets critical of his administration has prompted a member of his own party to question the commander-in-chief’s commitment to upholding the constitutionally protected right to free speech. “Mr. President: Words spoken by the President of the United States matter,” Sen. Ben Sasse, Nebraska Republican, said in a statement Wednesday evening. “Are you tonight recanting of the oath you took on January 20th to preserve, protect and defend the First Amendment?” (Snip) Mr. Trump ignited a firestorm earlier Wednesday for suggesting federal regulators review NBC’s broadcasting license after the network reported

Comments:
Principled Republicans such as Ben Sasse (who has 2 extra letters in his surname) far prefer someone like the high-minded and collegial GWB, who let the lying left frame the narrative at every turn. After all, there´s lots of money to be made from the leftist vision of a diminished USA with ever-expanding levels of government control.

Freedom of the Press is just exercising the Freedom of Speech in print. ´The press´ is not some sacred cow given a special dispensation of rights superior to the rest of us - we all have the same rights - and one of those is Freedom of Speech. Being elected president did not deprive DJT of his right of free speech and the right to verbally counterpunch when he´s being ´lied-on´ by the holy and sacred ´press.´

He has never liked Donald Trump.

These Trump-haters are the go-to guys for the media. ...need a nasty statement on any topic in order to ridicule and belittle Mr. Trump? They know right where to go for the nastiest verbiage from Republicans, who cares about veracity?

When you use the phrase "critical of his administration" of course it is inappropriate to censor them. However, if you are worried about the press out and out lying, that is a different issue.

Station licenses are conditional on meeting the community interest which is a broad term which could require telling the truth.

NBC doesn´t have a license to revoke because it doesn´t broadcast. The stations that carry NBC are vulnerable.

But I wouldn´t expect a Senator to have any idea about which he speaks.

Ben, do you not understand the Constitution?
Freedom of the press is not license to lie or slander without consequence. Neither is it a guarantee of the issuance of a license to use public broadcast frequencies that are administered by agencies authorized by our elected representatives.

Why do they always forget the first part: "Congress shall make no law..."?

Anyway, until Trump actually does something, he´s just tweaking the press. They deserve it.

It´s always the Senators who are not up for election.

Trump may have been thinking of something like the old "fairness doctrine", which obliged broadcaster license holders to provide balance in discussion of controversial issues. The Supreme Court held it to be constitutional, but then the FCC rescinded the rule in the 1980´s because the proliferation of media outlets made it seem unnecessary. But I would think that it might be worth reconsidering, especially since "balance" is a much different animal than "censorship".

Let’s put the Uranium One scandal in perspective: The cool half-million bucks the Putin regime funneled to Bill Clinton was five times the amount it spent on those Facebook ads — the ones the media-Democrat complex ludicrously suggests swung the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump. The Facebook-ad buy, which started in June 2015 — before Donald Trump entered the race — was more left-wing agitprop (ads pushing hysteria on racism, immigration, guns, etc.) than electioneering. The Clintons’ own long-time political strategist Mark Penn estimates that just $6,500 went to actual electioneering. (You read that right: 65 hundred dollars.) By

The major developing stories this week have been so scantily and poorly covered in the mainstream press that you may want an easy primer. To fully understand it you have to look at alternative media because just as Harvey Weinstein counted on complicit enablers -- his colleagues, victims and the press -- Hillary Clinton, Robert Mueller and a cast of characters, including a press determined to cover for them have hidden what occurred. It’s taken some time, to be sure, but the evidence of their wrongdoing is becoming harder and harder to hide. Stalling and misdirection are their last redoubt.
