Florida orange crop expected
to be lowest in 75 years

This was supposed to be the year Florida´s citrus industry rebounded. After a decade of fighting a losing battle against a tree-killing disease and declining yields, growers thought this year´s abundant crop promised a turnaround. Then, just weeks before harvest, Hurricane Irma hit. "This was a real punch in the face," said Andrew Meadows, spokesperson for citrus trade organization Florida Citrus Mutual. Overcome by almost $800 million in losses from the hurricane, the state´ citrus industry is suddenly facing its lowest orange yield in 75 years, far worse than forecasts expected just a couple months ago. Nearly 60 percent of all citrus

Hurricane Irma raked the entire Florida peninsula (and Keys) from bottom to top. Although the eye tracked up the west side of the state close to Tampa Bay, the worst damage was to the right, the east, of the storm´s center. Citrus groves were well along in their growing season, swelling green oranges perhaps the size of baseballs, waiting for the first autumn chill to start turning mature color. Many if not most of these fruits were blown off the trees.

Might have been. Beeks not only survived the assault by the silverback mountain gorilla in the cage slated to return to Rwanda--it hurt at first but he actually came to like it--but Sigourney Weaver herself coaxed him back to the human race. Now he walks like John Cleese in Ministry of Silly Walks. It took him eight years to make his way back to America.

Seriously, the state agencies closest to the citrus farmers think this year will be a disaster; the feds think otherwise. Around here our sole orange tree lost over half of its fruit. What remains will probably be delicious, but there won´t be much of it.

When the crop is less, all the nutrients go into less fruit, making what remains more intense, as happened in Bordeaux in 1961. But I don´t know. Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, and tangerines aren´t exactly like wine grapes.

In the days right after Irma finished her damage, I purchased a number of cartons of real lemon juice and froze it. I will at least have some lemon juice available if I need a citrus hit. This combined with the destruction of the California wine industry is economic destruction that is going to take a year or so to come to full fruition I suspect.

If House conservatives get their way, Congress will soon be investigating whether the Justice Department gave 2016 Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton special treatment during its investigation into her improper use of an unsecure email server while secretary of state. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) announced on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” Friday that he and his colleagues (presumably from the House Conservative Caucus) are calling for "a full review by the Judiciary Committee of the processes and procedures that potentially gave Hillary Clinton a different process and a different standard of justice than would be applied to any other American.” Gaetz

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I´m thankful Barack Obama is no longer the president. Eight years of his droning superior apologizing for America was approximately eight years more than enough. I´m thankful Hillary Clinton will never be president. The lies, the corruption, the incompetence — bye. I´m thankful my fears about Donald Trump seem to have been unfounded. Not a fascist. Not a secret liberal. Not an incompetent. ISIS is defeated. GDP at 3% plus. Some 60 great originalist judges nominated. Regulations cut back at an amazing rate. Unsealed bank records appear to reinforce the claim that Democrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign bought and paid for the sensational “piss-gate” dossier that used anonymous sources to smear President Trump by falsely linking him to Russia. The dossier is the salacious, 35-page report commissioned by Democrat-aligned opposition research firm Fusion GPS. The statements in the partisan hit job were compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele and published by BuzzFeed. One claim was that Donald Trump hired prostitutes to urinate on a bed. The dossier was just one of many particularly outrageous dirty tricks Clinton’s campaign to undercut her opponent’s campaign during the

WASHINGTON – Following a mass shooting that killed 26 at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced legislation last week that would penalize political appointees who fail to meet the standards of the FBI’s criminal background check system, among other reforms. The 26-year-old gunmen, Devin Patrick Kelley, had previously been discharged from the Air Force for bad behavior. His domestic violence conviction in military court should have disqualified him from buying a semi-automatic rifle he used to murder churchgoers, but the FBI never received proper records from the Air Force. “For years agencies and states haven’t complied with

By definition, each group must strive against the other. Why must the groups strive against each other? I don’t know. Also shut up, racist. Recent pics of Malia Obama showed her kissing a tall, athletically-built white male who was most likely a fellow university student. It seems normal enough, right? She’s a young woman, he’s a young man – so what’s the problem? Well, apparently many in the Black community find what she did to be an appalling act of…racism. The onslaught of negativity directed at the daughter of the former President is both shocking and troubling. Why do so many choose to see the world through the narrow prism of color and then demand that color requires one to never deviate from their “rules”

That worries advocates for the protection of dark skies, who say that artificial night glow can affect wildlife like migrating birds and keeps people from connecting to the stars. What´s more, they say, all that wasted light sent out into space is effectively wasted money. The findings are in a new study in the journal Science Advances that used five years of data from a satellite launched in 2011. This satellite has an instrument that gives
