New College Student Survey:
Yes, Speech Can Be Violence

National Review, by David French

If you follow free-speech controversies for any length of time, you’ll understand two things about public opinion. First, an overwhelming percentage of Americans will declare their support for free speech. Second, a shocking percentage of Americans also support censoring speech they don’t like. (Snip) For example, 81 percent agree with the statement that “words can be a form of violence.” A full 58 percent of students believe that colleges should “forbid” speakers who have a “history of engaging in hate speech.” And what is hate speech? The definition the students liked was staggeringly broad. Two-thirds agreed that hate speech is

Maybe we should just close all colleges for one or two years and send these "students" to pick up trash along our highways for that period. This might serve as a dose of reality.

(for literalists out there, that´s just my tongue-in-cheek suggestion)

I suggest they have to write, 1000 times at the beginning of each semester, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me." See if that helps some of them.

Apparently, we need to revise the old rhyme, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me".

One of life´s lessons that few seem to learn is this. "One CHOOSES to be hurt, insulted or become angry over words". Anyone that is "triggered" by speach has a problem that requires intervention, not a safe space.

The Supreme Court ruled that money is speech, therefore, if speech is violence, then money can be denied by the taxpayer for student loans. Since violent speech is only attached to conservative thought by liberals declaring speech as violence, then leftist snowflakes should be denied access to college....

Supreme Court will take up a second

The Supreme Court announced Friday it will add a second case this term to determine whether partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional, accepting a challenge from Maryland Republicans who say the state’s dominant Democrats drew a congressional district that violated their rights. The court already has heard a challenge from Wisconsin Democrats, who challenged a legislative redistricting drawn by the state’s Republican leaders. The cases could reshape the way American elections are conducted. The Supreme Court has never thrown out a state’s redistricting efforts due to partisan gerrymandering, and political parties consider drawing the map one of the perks of being in

Trump’s gift to Israel is not merely that 68 years after Israel declared Jerusalem its capital, the US finally recognized Israel’s capital. In his declaration, Trump said, “Israel has made its capital in the city of Jerusalem, the capital the Jewish people established in ancient times.” By stating this simple truth, Trump fully rejected the anti-Israel legacy of his predecessor Barack Obama. In his speech in Cairo in 2009, Obama intimated that Israel’s legitimacy is rooted in the Holocaust, rather than in the Jewish nation’s millennial attachment to the Land of Israel. Whereas the Balfour Declaration and the League of Nations Mandate rooted

Some members of Congress are threatening to block government funding unless Congress provides amnesty to so-called Dreamers—the illegal aliens included in President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which President Donald Trump is ending. Responsible members of Congress should not give in. Such an effort would be fundamentally flawed and would only encourage even more illegal immigration—just as the 1986 amnesty in the Immigration Reform and Control Act did. Democrats portray the DACA program as only benefitting those who were a few years old when they came to the U.S. illegally, leaving them unable to speak their native language and ignorant

While working with General Michael Flynn on The Field of Fight, I interviewed many of his former colleagues in order to better understand my co-author. Virtually all of them described a man who cared deeply about the truth and presented it in circumstances that were certainly not favorable to him. These people portrayed General Flynn as a compulsive truth-teller. So why has he now confessed to making false statements to the FBI? Not only would such behavior be totally out of character, but it contradicts the bureau’s own publicly announced findings last February, and would have us believe that Gen. Flynn

Four Senate Republicans joined with Democrats to strip from the GOP tax bill a last-minute provision that would have shielded Hillsdale College, a prominent conservative school, from a new tax on university endowments. An amendment offered by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) — and incorporated into a package of changes Republicans unveiled Friday evening to their tax plan, H.R. 1 (115) — would have exempted all colleges that don’t accept federal student aid from the endowment tax. But Democrats immediately cried foul over the plan because it appeared to benefit only a single college, Hillsdale College, whose president, Larry Arnn, is influential in

If you´re finding this all a bit hard to follow, relax: If a white grade-school teacher pretends to be black, that´s totally racist and you should denounce him as such immediately; But if a white professor pretends to be Harvard Law School´s "first woman of color" and you point it out, then you´re the racist. The avalanche of sexual harassment claims, with new ones pouring forth daily, leads me to the wisdom of George Washington´s observation in his farewell address in 1796: "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. ... And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be managed without religion." You may say, "There you go again, Star. Waving your Bible." But is there a better answer for dealing with this problem? Society, all human life, is guided by rules. The only question before us is: What are the rules that we choose to

Sen. Cotton said Senate Democrats are abusing procedures that allow them to stymie Trump’s executive branch nominees. He said that allows career bureaucrats to run their agencies anyway they want, “without any political accountability.” The freshman Arkansas senator leveled the charge in remarks to the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group, on Nov. 16 in Washington. Our two greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, respectively thought Thanksgiving sufficiently important to initiate its national celebration and to later revive this tradition. Our accepted convention is that Thanksgiving is about family togetherness and feasting. Surely this is part of it—but perhaps a more refined notion of what this nearly ancient holiday should mean for us today is helpful. National days of reflection are required to unify the American public in common sentiment. Washington had this in mind in issuing his rightly famous Thanksgiving Day proclamation of 1789. First begun as a harvest holiday,

I´m pretty much done with the sex scandals. They were fun, but they´re just going to have to carry on without me. If someone broke the law and you can prove it, prosecute him. If someone violated the rules of his organization, eject him. Other than that, if women have forgotten the fine art of slapping a man in the face, there´s not a whole hell of a lot society can do for them.
