The University of Southern California has rejected a $5 million donation from Harvey Weinstein in response to allegations that Weinstein sexually abused scores of women for decades. The Hollywood movie producer’s generous $5 million donation would have funded — wait for it — an endowment for women filmmakers at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Southern Cal administrators decided to refuse the gift after a USC student, Tiana Lowe, launched a Change.org petition urging the school “to finally muster the moral spine to refuse Harvey Weinstein’s blood money in exchange for its soul.” “Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood kingmaker and production pioneer, is not
There was a president of Yale University who went on to be Major League Baseball commissioner. His name may have been Giamatti. When students and faculty complained about dirty money contributed to Yale by organized crime figures, he was succinct in his answer. "Once the money is deposited into a Yale account, it is no longer dirty."
This Tiana Lowe sounds like a conservative and is way too good looking for a lib.
I don’t want a Hecuba statue. I don’t want a consent carnival. I don’t want a Title IX t-shirt. I don’t want a single other pathetic display of virtue signaling while I have to watch the Trojan women walk past wife-beater and murderer OJ Simpson’s jersey in the Coliseum.
Venezuela has been declared a deadbeat on its debt by both Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor´s after it couldn´t cough up $260 million for a couple of sovereign bond payments. Now any bond with Venezuela´s name on it – and all the bonds issued in the country – will be affected. This will add up to billions. All that´s left now is for the repo men of the bond world, the Investment Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA), to declare default to trigger cross-default clauses on a type of bond insurance known as credit default swaps for the deed to
Republican Roy Moore is on the hot seat for alleged bad behavior around women and girls some 40 years ago. Why aren´t Democrats Joe Biden and Bob Menendez as well? Former vice president Biden, recall, has a long history of groping women, touching them inappropriately in public, making them obviously uncomfortable, as some of these photos show. Biden is in line as a top Democratic Party contender for the presidency, and nobody´s saying a thing about this. Substantially worse than Biden is Democratic senator Bob Menendez, now on trial in New Jersey for corruption. He´s been accused of having a penchant for
S&P Global Ratings downgraded Venezuela´s foreign currency sovereign credit rating late Monday beyond junk to "selective default" after it failed to make two payments within a grace period. There´s still hope for restructuring with only some issues in peril. But Venezuela´s unpaid obligations total $420 million, and four additional coupon payments are overdue but within their grace periods. S&P lowered two issues´ ratings to "D" (default) and said there is a one in two chance that the government could "default again" over the next three months. On Monday, bondholders met in Caracas at the invitation of President Nicolas Maduro to discuss
Venezuela, one of the world’s riskiest credits, was declared in default by S&P Global Ratings after missing two interest payments on its debt. The nation, home to the world’s largest oil reserves, owed investors about $200 million and failed to make those payments by the end of a 30-day grace period that expired over the weekend, S&P said in a statement in which it lowered the country’s rating to SD. Plagued with payment delays and running low on cash, it’s the first time in recent years the government has exceeded the buffer period on its bonds. State oil producer Petroleos de
One of the most popular arias in the opera catalogue, sung by the licentious Duke of Mantua in Giuseppe Verdi´s Rigoletto, is the tenor song "La donna a mobile." Its opening, "qual piuma al vento" (woman is fickle like a feather in the wind), is a cynical masculine put-down sung by a scoundrel. But its later lines, "muta d´accento e di pensier" (she changes in voice and in thought), are curiously applicable to a real-life Donna: the Democratic Party politician Donna Brazile. This Donna is no novice to local and national party politics in the U.S. She has long been an
In the latest chapter of the great illegal immigrant sob story, turns out the post office hasn´t bothered to deliver a number of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewals on by the tight Oct. 5 deadline set by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. At first glance, it looked like another activist dance from the lawyers lobby representing some sad-sacks who just can´t quite follow the rules. Thirty-three applicants out of 122,000 did not have their mailed applications into the hands of the immigration authorities on time. But the New York Times story does show that the DACA recipients´ complaints have merit.
Tesla, the obnoxious green car company whose products roam the streets of Beverly Hills and carry its assorted movie stars, is about to get a lesson in sustainability if the Republican congressional tax reform bill goes through. No more free stuff. Here´s one example; Will.i.am´s custom wide-body Tesla S parked on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Highsnobiety has the details. Here´s another: Mel Gibson having a cow over a valet not bringing him back his Tesla soon enough. Daily Mail on the job. Turns out the big reason anyone buys one of these green vehicles isn´t to virtue-signal, although there´s a lot
Meanwhile, Back in Trump Country: On the same day Democrats were cruising to impressive victories in governor races in New Jersey and Virginia, an NBC/WSJ poll of voters taken from 438 “Trump counties” was released. These are counties that either flipped from voting for President Obama in 2012 to Donald Trump in 2016, or “surge” counties where Trump performed at least 20 percentage points better than Mitt Romney did in 2012. The survey showed Trump suffering some slippage in these places when compared to a previous poll taken in July, but not by much. Overall, his approval rating in these
Sebastian Gorka, one of President Trump´s former national security officials, is finally back. The popular explainer of Trump´s policies will be taking a spot on Fox News as a national security strategist, adding depth and analysis to how the U.S. role in the world is playing out. With his inside knowledge of how the Trump White House works, he should be an excellent source of information who can help listeners understand what is going on as events play out. Here´s the fun part: it should drive the left apoplectic. Ben Rhodes, a former Obama official and Gorka´s noisiest detractor, will be
Want to see what it looks like inside the head of a Trump Derangement Syndrome victim? Look no further than Nation magazine stalwart Katha Pollitt´s unhinged diary of her inability to accept reality. It´s actually an amazing specimen of the phenomenon, written in her safe space of the New York Review of Books´ daily blog section, where she is likely sure no conservative treads. Here, she found herself free to let it all hang out, spewing all the hate she feels toward anyone who is not...exactly like her in the matter of politics. Hate. It´s all about hate. And she admits it´s
The other day, a friend of mine, a liberal Democrat, said that he had to admit his life hadn’t changed since Trump was elected. Well, I said, It’s only been eight months. Give him time! What I wanted to say was, How nice for you. Tell it to that undocumented teenage girl who was blocked for a month from getting an abortion while held in a Texas detention center. Tell it to the Muslim family that a Connecticut neighbor of mine saw a white guy shouting at in the Big Y supermarket parking lot: Go back to your own country! Tell
David Boies, the left-wing lawyer famous for taking on Al Gore´s hanging chad Florida election disputes in 2000, turns out to have been the facilitator of an army of private investigators who tracked actresses making sexual abuse allegations against Hollywood studio big Harvey Weinstein and the reporters reporting it. That would be the same David Boies who defended Michael Moore for his illegal Cuba-junketeering in the making of the movie Sicko, a phony Potemkin-village account describing the glories of Castrocare, and the same David Boies who defended CBS after its disgusting smear job on General William Westmoreland, who sued. A
Monday on CNBC, former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) said due to the sexual misconduct accusations leveled against former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, he should step aside in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Bush said, “This is not a question of innocence or guilt like in a criminal proceeding, this is a question of what’s right and what’s wrong. Acknowledging that you’re dating teenagers when you’re 32-years old as assistant state attorney is wrong. It’s just plain wrong.” He added, “We need to stand for basic principles, and decency has to be one of those.
Republican Sen. Jeff Flake says he would rather see a Democrat win Alabama’s open Senate seat than accused teen groper Roy Moore — and compared the GOP candidate to former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. “If the choice is between Roy Moore and a Democrat, if I were in Alabama I’d vote for the Democrat,” the Arizona senator?, who recently announced he would not seek reelection,? said Monday. “There was a time when Republican senators would go and campaign for a Democrat rather than seat a Republican who would be so repugnant to the party and would diminish the party’s chances
In the past few weeks, I´ve been a woman of split personalities. On a good day, I´m elated — empowered and inspired by the many women who have courageously opened the floodgates to help end the shroud of silence and shame that surrounds victims of sexual assault and harassment. I shared my stories. I brought other women together to share theirs. We were giddy at the catharsis. It felt like a sea change. On a bad day, I´m despondent — devastated and angry that so many of the people who were rightly outraged over Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey were utterly disbelieving
Known for his insightful take on politics, journalist and author Thomas Wictor believes Judge Roy Moore’s signature in Gloria Allred accuser Beverly Young Nelson’s yearbook is a forgery. (Photo) The sevens in 1977 to the right of “Christmas,” are very different from the sevens in the date (12-22-77) above “Old Hickory House.” “Look at the two versions of the number “7,” tweeted Wictor. “”12-22-77” and “Olde Hickory House” were written by a different person,” he added. Next, Wictor points out “the “R” and “y” in “Roy,”” are not written the same way. The inflection of the “Y” is more pronounced
Jeff Sessions is a man in search of a banana peel. When he can’t find one to step on, he supplies his own. Sessions is not a bad man, but he is a bad attorney general, as he demonstrated again Tuesday. By writing to Republicans in Congress just hours before he was scheduled to testify that he was open to appointing a special prosecutor to examine former FBI Director James Comey’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s e-mail case and the notorious Uranium One deal, Sessions primed the pump for a really big show. Democrats arrived furious and Republicans gleefully expected an ah-ha moment. Both
Attorney General Jeff Sessions is said to be considering appointing a second special counsel to investigate issues related to former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and the Obama administration. Sessions´ contemplation comes after the House Judiciary Chairman urged him to look into Comey´s handling of the FBI´s investigation into Clinton´s email use, the 2010 Uranium One deal, and the Clinton Foundation. Trump has repeatedly called Sessions a "weak" attorney general and pushed him to investigate Clinton and the Democrats as the FBI investigates Trump and his campaign for possible collusion with Moscow during the 2016
The ´socialist´ doctor charged with cracking Senator Rand Paul´s ribs in a crunching blindside tackle may have harbored a secret grudge against his GOP neighbor for spoiling his lakeside views and ´devaluing´ his home, DailyMail.com can reveal. Rene Boucher, 59, told Paul in the wake of the mauling that he hadn´t been able to sell his $740,000 house for ten years because the congressman´s trees were ´in the way´. It´s believed Boucher was referring to woodland at the back of Paul´s property that blocks the doctor´s views of the picturesque private lake that forms the centerpiece of their upscale gated
Was a 14-year-old girl molested by Alabama Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore, or is she lying? It’s a yes-or-no question. Was a 16-year-old girl sexually assaulted by Moore, or is she lying? Again, it’s a yes-or-no question. Finally, do you believe that there are conditions under which a child molester should sit in the United States Senate? Again, this question is binary. Yet many conservatives seem to be seeking a third answer to all three of these questions, mostly to avoid giving straight answers. Let’s begin with the first question: Did Roy Moore molest a 14-year-old girl?
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Tuesday that the entire U.S. House will now face mandatory training to avoid sexual harassment and discrimination, moving to address the growing national scandal over behavior ranging from the boorish to the criminal. His comments came hours after a House committee held a hearing on harassment. Mr. Ryan said the House will now have a policy of mandatory training for every lawmaker and every staffer. “Our goal is not only to raise awareness, but also make abundantly clear that harassment in any form has no place in this institution,” he said.
When the Washington Post filed its story against Roy Moore last week, we took a cautious line, agreeing with Republican lawmakers who said “if true,” these charges disqualify the GOP´s nominee in Alabama’s special election for the Senate. We pressed Republicans to extract more information from Moore. Since then, plenty more information has emerged. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, after getting Moore’s side of the story last week, withdrew his endorsement of the former judge. A former boyfriend of the chief Washington Post subject, who says Moore fondled her as a 14-year-old after flirting with her outside a custody hearing, corroborated the story. A
Environment: This week, thousands of scientists issued a bleak and terrifying "second notice" to mankind about how we will destroy the planet unless we take "urgent" action. If this warning is as reliable as the first notice these scientists issued in 1992, we have nothing to worry about. In an article published in the journal Bioscience, 15,364 scientists warned that we are "jeopardizing our future" and that "immediate action" is needed to "safeguard our imperiled biosphere." "Soon it will be too late to shift course away from our failing trajectory, and time is running out," the scientists say. The article
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Monday called on Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore to step aside, hours after a new accuser came forward alleging Moore sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager. “If he continues this will not end well for Mr. Moore,” Graham tweeted. (Snip) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), on Monday called for Moore to “step aside,” and was followed by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and others. Some have suggested rallying a write-in campaign around Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.), who lost to Moore in a primary runoff in September.
