Last week Stephen Paddock killed at least 59 Las Vegas concert-goers using automatic weapons. Reportedly aided by “bump stocks” that made his semi-automatic rifles into automatic weapons, his killing spree was the worst in U.S. history. People were understandably horrified that he was able to fire what amounted to machine guns into a crowd. Yet similar weapons were being fired in movie theaters around the country. Three of the top five movies at the box office featured characters blasting away with automatic weapons. Two -- Kingsman: Golden Circle and American Assassin -- included so many examples of such violence that
When I grew up we were watching Combat, 12 O´CLock High, The Lone Ranger and for goodness sake all those Westerns TV and movies. We didn´t get inspired to commit mayhem by the movies, TV or the guns in the house that the dad´s brought home from the big one.
Funny thing though, most of us grew up with a parent at home. Those who didn´t lived in a community influenced and molded by those who did. We went to Sunday school and Boy Scouts and or Girl Scouts or Camp Fire Girls, Indian Guides etc.
I don´t blame guns video games or movies. I blame the break down of the family unit. I trace the cause to our decision to pay people to break up their families, add more illegitimate children to get paid more and sit on their keesters with no worries for essential clothing food and shelter. The families not prone to sit at home on the dole had to pay for those who did and found that to sustain the "American dream" they couldn´t afford for a parent to stay home.
Blaming Hollywood is as useless as blaming inanimate bits of hardware.
These Hollywood liberals keep calling for gun control. Congress should say ok we´ll give you gun control. Violent movies cause violence so we will make it illegal to display guns in movies. That will shut them up.
I don´t buy into the notion that violent movies "instruct" us in violence... at least for the vast majority of well-adjusted viewers. (There will always be a few particularly-impressionable adolescents who might take a cue... I doubt 64-year-old Paddock decided to kill a bunch of innocents because of his exposure to movies.)
We DO tend to get desensitized to things we see over and over.
However, all the Hollywood violence DOES put the purveyors into an awkward situation. Having Weinstein go after the NRA is kinda like Algore (with his private jet and $36k residential utility bill) lecture us about our evil carbon-burning ways.
Whether we see guns in movies or TV or see the nightly news, we are each responsible for our actions. Guns don´t automatically shoot bullets while placed on a table or in a drawer. Our society is crumbling around us and the idiots who think gun control will stop the killings are responsible for the shootings.
As news of former National Security Advisor Micheal Flynn’s guilty plea broke Friday morning, ousted FBI director James Comey appeared to mock the Trump administration on Twitter. The tweet is the latest in a long-running war of words raging between Comey and Trump since the president dismissed Comey this past May. Comey’s firing, apparently at the advice of White House adviser and Presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, is broadly understood to have led to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s decision to appoint Special Counsel Robert Mueller. It was Mueller’s investigation that yielded Flynn’s guilty plea for lying to the FBI about phone
President Trump on Friday shot down reports that he was about to fire Secretary of State Rex Tillerson — and slammed media reports about Tillerson’s supposedly imminent demise as “FAKE NEWS.” “The media has been speculating that I fired Rex Tillerson or that he would be leaving soon – FAKE NEWS! He’s not leaving and while we disagree on certain subjects, (I call the final shots) we work well together and America is highly respected again!” Trump tweeted at 3:08 p.m. The tweet also included a link to an Instagram photo of Trump swearing Tillerson in at the White House.
On Friday, Michael Flynn pled guilty to lying to FBI agents about making contact with Russian Ambassador Kislyak during the transition period. In a stunning twist, the Trump White House revealed to CNN that the calls were approved by the Obama administration. Following pleading guilty to making false statements to the FBI, General Michael Flynn released the statement below: “After over 33 years of military service to our country, including nearly five years in combat away from my family, and then my decision to continue to serve the United States, it has been extraordinarily painful to endure these many months
White House lawyer Ty Cobb responded to the news that former national security advisor Michael Flynn pled guilty on Friday by saying that “nothing” about Flynn’s guilty plea implicates anyone in the White House.Flynn pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his post-election contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, CNBC reported. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison but Flynn’s plea agreement calls for no more than six months in prison and a possible maximum fine of $9,500.Following this latest development in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, White House lawyer Ty Cobb issued the following statement:Today,
The Senate is making last minute changes to the tax overhaul bill after failing to get it across the line Thursday night. We’ll keep you in the know with the latest developments. So what was the gimmick that Flake wanted changed? Apparently, it was the sunset of provisions allowing immediate expensing of capital investments after five years. Now this will be phased out over time rather than ended all at once. That seems like an odd change as many economists say the boost to the economy from immediate expensing largely depends on it ending, which pushes forward corporate investments. Why stepping
WASHINGTON — Ringing in the holidays for the first time from Washington, President Donald Trump lit the National Christmas Tree Thursday evening, wishing the country “a Merry Christmas” — as he vowed to do during his campaign.Taking part in the annual ritual, Trump counted down from 10 before his wife, Melania, pushed a button to set the tree aglow with golden lights and silver stars.“Today’s a day that I’ve been looking very much forward to all year long,” said Trump. “And now, as the president of the United States, it’s my tremendous honor to finally wish America and the world
Ten months into the Trump presidency, #NeverTrumpers are still stuck in denial and anger, a long way from acceptance, the final step of grieving. Despite endless predictions that he wouldn’t be the nominee or that he wouldn’t win the election, here we are ten months into the era of Trump. Here’s a montage of the predictions if you want a laugh. Many famous #NeverTrumpers have gone to ground since the election. Karl Rove makes only rare appearances on Fox News, only to comment on special elections. The Bushes only recently resurfaced, saying that they didn’t vote for Trump and that
Gloria Steinem would not mount the same vigorous defence of Bill Clinton today that she offered in a controversial 1998 article that downplayed accusations of harassment against the then president, the feminist icon has told the Guardian. But Steinem said she did not regret writing the New York Times article in the first place.“We have to believe women. I wouldn’t write the same thing now because there’s probably more known about other women now. I’m not sure,” she said on the red carpet of an annual comedy benefit for the Ms Foundation for Women, of which she is a founder.“What you
On Thursday a San Francisco jury found Kate Steinle’s killer, an illegal alien, innocent of murder or manslaughter. Twitter exploded with outraged Americans after a San Francisco jury acquitted the illegal alien who killed Katie Steinle. Kate Steinle died in her father’s arm. No Obama official contacted the Steinle family after their daughter’s death. President Trump is furious over the verdict! “A disgraceful verdict in the Kate Steinle case! No wonder the people of our Country are so angry with Illegal Immigration,” Trump tweeted. President Trump needs to get tough on DACA and illegal immigration. The Democrats and open borders
Matt Lauer has been spotted for the first time since his firing, with DailyMail.com photographing the disgraced newsman at his Hamptons home. The former NBC host was seen in a jeep as he drove out from behind the gates of his $33million estate on Thursday while still wearing his wedding ring. He headed into town where he met with his lawyer friend, Eddie Burke Jr.The ousted Today Show host emerged from his palatial home as his legal team began working towards getting him a $30million golden parachute from NBC, Page Six reported. His lawyers are also believed to be devising
The screenwriter of ´Rachel Getting Married´ and ´The Mummy´ (and the daughter of filmmaker Sidney Lumet) details a terrifying encounter with the legendary music producer, who says he is stepping down from his businesses in the wake of the new claims. Russell Simmons, a prolific music and TV producer and co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, was accused of sexual assault and harassment by model Keri Claussen Khalighi in a Nov. 19 article in the Los Angeles Times. Simmons then denied the incident in a letter published Nov. 22 by The Hollywood Reporter. The letter prompted Jenny Lumet — an award-winning
LAKEWOOD, Colorado—”How did we end up at the Supreme Court? It’s a long story,” Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, told The Daily Signal. The story began in 2012, when two men walked into his family-run bakery, and asked Jack to create a custom cake for their same-sex wedding ceremony. Because of his Christian faith, Jack declined, and instead offered to sell them something different. The couple “stormed out,” Jack said, then sued him under Colorado’s anti-discrimination law. After losing his case before the Colorado commission and the Colorado Court of Appeals, which both ruled that that Jack has no
The NFL’s sellout to their anthem-protesting players is starting to look a lot more like a buyout. According to ESPN, the league will offer nearly $100 million to causes designed to promote “social justice change.” In a move unlike anything seen from a major American sports league, the league will offer the money in hopes that it will end the ratings-killing protest movement begun by Colin Kaepernick in the preseason of 2016. According to ESPN: The NFL’s multifaceted offer earmarks at least $89 million over a seven-year period for both national and local projects, according to documents reviewed by ESPN. On the national
A homeless man whose undocumented immigration status intensified a national debate over the ethics of sanctuary laws was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges Thursday in the shooting of Kate Steinle as she strolled with her father on Pier 14 to take in a view of San Francisco Bay. In returning its verdict on the sixth day of deliberations, the San Francisco Superior Court jury found Jose Ines Garcia Zarate guilty of a single lesser charge of being a felon in possession of a gun. He will be sentenced at a later date. Garcia Zarate, a 45-year-old Mexican citizen who was released
When Defense Attorney Matt Gonzalez and Public Defender Jeff Adachi chose to make the exoneration of their client Jose Ines Garcia Zarate in the death of Kate Steinle an opportunity to attack the president, vice president and attorney general, my immediate thought was these two young lawyers are fools. They should learn when to keep their mouths shut. But no matter -- because the real villains in the Kate Steinle story are the San Francisco politicians who made the rules that prevented ICE from removing the already five-time deported criminal Zarate from the country. These SF pols already had Kate´s
Sweet Jesus, Donald Trump doesn´t even understand the Bible´s most important story! At Thursday night´s annual Christmas tree lighting at the White House, the president recounted the birth of Jesus by saying it "begins 2,000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son." Their baby? Um, care to take a paternity test? As all devout Christians believe, Jesus is not the son of Joseph, but of God. Yes, the future savior was born in Bethlehem during the time of Herod to Mary, the wife of Joseph. [Snip] But he is not the father. He with a capital H
Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough called on President Donald Trump’s cabinet to remove him from office using the 25th Amendment.Partial transcript as follows: SCARBOROUGH: The problem, Mika, is that we are not fine in this country. I said America will be strong. We will survive this. But right now, at this particular moment — and we will get to this in a moment with Richard Haas — we are headed towards a nuclear showdown, most insiders say, Richard has said it matches everything we’ve heard from inside the administration, we are closer to war on the Korean
The National Football League and player representatives came to an agreement on Wednesday evening, that the league would throw $89 million at so-called “social justice” issues. The money represents a desperate attempt by the league to put an end to the constant anti-American protests held during the playing of the national anthem. Though, the agreement does not include a condition that the anthem protests will end. The two parties have agreed in principle that the league will spend the $89 million over a seven-year period on causes dealing with “criminal justice reform, law enforcement/community relations and education,” ESPN reported. The
New reporting suggests that former national security adviser Michael Flynn will testify that Donald Trump as a candidate ordered him to make contact with Russian officials. ABC’s Brian Ross, the chief investigative correspondent, said that sources told him Flynn is prepared to testify against Trump and his family. “He has promised full cooperation to the Mueller team,” Ross said, referring to special prosecutor Robert Mueller. “He is prepared to testify, we have been told by a confidant, against President Trump, against others in the Trump family, and others in the White House.” “He is prepared to testify that President
Here’s something you don’t hear every day — but an inspector general who was actually appointed by Barack Obama told Tucker Carlson of Fox News that there was “strategic coordination” taking place among the State Department, Campaign Team Hillary Clinton, certain key legal minds and politicos on Capitol Hill, regarding the behind-scenes talk of The Emails. Yes, those emails — the ones that were marked classified and top secret and that were found on Clinton’s private and unsecured email system. Thud. That’s the sound of Democrats’ jaws dropping. From the mouth of former Inspector General Charles McCullough III, as reported by Mediaite: “I’m
The sexual harassment scandal surrounding Michigan Democrat Rep. John Conyers has shed light on another major scandal: Conyers’ deteriorating mental health, which is said to have been an open secret in Washington and Michigan political circles. That the 88-year-old Conyers, until recently a ranking member on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, is reportedly losing his mental health is emerging as common knowledge among political insiders at the same time that Democrats push Conyers toward resigning. Conyers is accused of serially sexually harassing his female staffers and demanding sexual favors from them, and Democrats have struggled to control the political blowback
Matt Lauer on Thursday apologized to those he has hurt after he was fired from NBC News in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against him. "There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions," Lauer said in a statement that was read on NBC´s "Today" show. "To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this, I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC." Lauer said in the statement that some of
Michael Flynn, who was fired as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser after revelations that he lied about his communications with Russia’s ambassador, is expected to plead guilty Friday morning to lying to federal agents about the contact. The charge against Flynn, 58, adds another prominent defendant to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Mueller has already secured indictments against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, as well as a guilty plea from a junior foreign policy adviser. The single charge is outlined in a criminal information unsealed Friday in a
Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), who is embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal, is hospitalized in his home state due to stress, according to two local reports on Thursday. "I just spoke with Monica Conyers on the phone and we want you to know that the congressman is resting comfortably in an area hospital. He´s doing OK, as well as he can be expected for a gentleman that´s approaching 90 years of age," Sam Riddle, a Conyers consultant, told WDIV TV. "The congressman´s health is not what it should be and lot of that is directly attributable to this media assault." Conyers stepped down
