House Speaker Paul Ryan says bump stocks – devices that can effectively turn semi-automatic rifles into fully automated weapons – should be addressed through a ´regulatory fix.´ The devices have drawn attention because a dozen of them were found among the arsenal of the killer in the Oct. 1 Las Vegas massacre. Legislation has been introduced in the House and Senate to ban their sale. But Ryan says addressing the issue by regulation instead would be ´the smartest, quickest fix.´ He also questioned why the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives approved the use of bump stocks during the Obama administration.
Seems Ryan needs a lesson on the Constitution. Legislators write laws, the executive branch enforces them. If ATF said the 2006 law didn´t regulate these devices, Congress has the option to pass another law that does. Our system is not designed for "quick fixes", it is designed to distribute, check and balance government power. If you want them banned Mr. Speaker, pass the bill instead of passing the buck!
Hey Speaker Ryan, read #1’s excellent advice. Get your fanny busy on Trump’s tax reform agenda and immigration issues. We have really had some embarrassing Republican House Speakers but this little guy takes the cake.
Although I’m familiar with many types of firearms from youth, long before and during Army Infantry training, I never used or saw a “bump stock”. They would seem to be pretty much useless other than for mass murder where accuracy is not important. However, friends more familiar than I tell me that a “bump stock” is not necessary to use a semi automatic rifle such as an M1A or M-16 rifle into something like full automatic. It involves holding the rifle waste high, hooking your thumb into a pocket while holding the trigger on, and forcing the weapon forward with the other forearm.
#4 "a “bump stock” is not necessary to use a semi automatic rifle such as an M1A or M-16 rifle into something like full automatic."
Correct. And more to the point, legally defining a "bump stock" is very difficult for the reason stated. Basically anything that could be harnessed to use recoil to push the trigger against the finger would work.
Hence, any law against butt stocks have to be very general, and start a rapid slide toward prohibition of all semi-automatics.
The "why" is extremely simple. It is because of the clear definition of an "automatic weapon".
The official, legal definition of an automatic weapon (machine gun) is that it is a weapon that can fire more than one shot for each pull of the trigger.
With a bump stock, the system lets the recoil of the gun permit the person to pull the trigger very quickly, so each shot is fired by a single pull of the trigger. Therefore, the device, by the long standing legal definition of an automatic weapon, does not create an automatic weapon.
Be worried about how they define a "bump stock". They might get to where anyone who can pull the trigger "too fast" would be breaking the law. How fast is too fast? One shot per hour? One shot per minute? One shot per second? Any skilled shooter can fire 2 or 3 shots per second with a semiautomatic pistol or rifle, although hitting anything that quickly is a whole different skill. Most would just miss quickly.
Is 2 or 3 shots per second "too fast" to be legal? Do they want to put timers on your guns?
I can see Feinstein now "Why would any normal person need to shoot more quickly than one shot per 20 seconds? Deer hunters don´t need rapid fire guns."
Just like a ban on magazines that hole "too many cartridges". Who would ever think that could happen? /s off
Standing on the edge of another slippery slope. A bump stock is NOT an automatic weapon, without any doubt. I don´t want one, but I don´t want it to be a camel´s nose under the "shooting too fast" tent, either.
To think that they thought they defanged the 2nd Amendment in 1934. Seven gangsters were killed with "two" submachine guns and shotguns so they regulated automatic rifles out of existence. Poof! There went the Militia portion of the 2nd Amendment. Now it will be bump stocks. Of course it will be unconstitutional, just as it was in 1934, but that won´t matter. They could go after the bad guys but they prefer to punish us.
PS: A Well Regulated Militia meant something different in the 1700´s than the left says it does today.
´The phrase "well-regulated" was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people´s arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it.´
This is just a ´back door´ to ban more of our second amendment rights. It is such a shame to see so many in the republican party (and on this site) agree with the democrats on this matter, including Lyin Ryan of course.
ATF head was Obama appointee when decision came down. Boss wanted a poison pill with which to abridge the 2nd amendment. Much like walking guns across the border Gun walking didn´t achieve the desired result, so ATF tried again. Will have to wait and see how successful this attempt is.
Paul, I must say you are simply a useless weenie. Even though I don´t live in your state, I do appreciate you reminding me to send some more money to Paul Nehlend´s campaign. You´re a disgrace to the Great Lakes region.
THE United States Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to enforce his controversial “Muslim ban”. The ban is now set to go into “full effect”, although it is not clear on what timescale this will happen. Legal challenges against the controversial measure are still making their way through the US courts, and have not yet reached the Supreme Court. Challenges by the state of Hawaii and the American Civil Liberties Union said the latest ban, as in its earlier iterations, discriminates against Muslims in violation of the US Constitution and is not permissible under immigration laws. However it will nonetheless go into
The campaign aide who shared the Access Hollywood tape with Donald Trump says the video of the president demeaning women that made the rounds last year ´is of course real.´ Trump´s deputy campaign manager at the time, David Bossie, confirmed Monday that it is the sitting president in the hot mic recording from 2005 bragging that he´s entitled to grab women ´by the p***y´ because he´s a star. ´The president made a tape where he acknowledged having the locker room talk. And I think that that´s where it ends with him. It was all about the talk,´ Bossie said. When the damning
It´s not surprising that President Trump would choose to travel to Utah Monday alongside Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican who´s represented the state in the Senate for the last 40 years. But Trump has broader intentions than just taking Hatch for a ride aboard Air Force One and championing one of the senator´s causes: shrinking the national monuments of Bears Ears and Grand-Staircase Escalante. The president wants to keep former GOP nominee Mitt Romney out of the U.S. Senate. Romney, a Mormon with roots in the state who previously served as the governor of Massachusetts, has been mulling a run for Hatch´s
President Donald Trump rushed to Michael Flynn´s defense on Monday morning, accusing the feds of destroying his former national security adviser´s life. Trump told reporters he feels ´very badly´ for Flynn, a retired general who served in his White House for a brief period after the inauguration. Flynn plead guilty last week to lying to the FBI as part of a plea deal. The president said that Hillary Clinton, his former opponent for president, ´lied many times, nothing happened to her.´ ´Flynn lied and it´s like they ruined his life. It was very unfair.´ Trump is on his way to Utah for an event
ISIS has made another threat to Christmas shoppers in London with a menacing poster warning of an impending attack. The poster, which as been published by a pro-ISIS media group, shows a jihadi draped in a bullet belt walking down Oxford Street underneath this year´s Christmas lights which currently hang above the central London road. It carries the warning: ´From now onwards we will go to attack them and they will not come to attack us. ISIS appears to be revving up their propaganda machine ahead of the holidays, producing a series of graphic posters threatening attacks in Europe and the United
French activists on Saturday occupied a Paris Apple Store as part of a campaign to try and shame Cupertino into paying local taxes. According to local reports, around 100 members of an anti-globalisation group called Attac occupied the store, near the Paris Opera, for “several hours”. Agence France Presse quoted Attac´s spokesperson Aurélie Trouvé as saying the group´s demand is that Cupertino “pay its fair share of taxes in the country in which it really operates”. Attac said it wanted Apple to cough up the €13 billion (£11.5bn, US$15bn, AU$20bn) the European Union last year said it´s dodged by processing its income through
Okay…okay…okay. Joy to the world. Any day, any moment, President Trump will announce that the US Embassy will, finally, be relocated to Jerusalem. That’s the talk…and if it happens, just in time for Christmas, or our Hanukkah, there will be dancing. Not me. (I’m taking Caroline Glick’s word on this, above Jared Kushner’s, who says, not so fast.) Readers of this column over the past years know darned well that I would like nothing better. It would be a dream come true. Also maybe a nightmare. I noted all that back in June in a column titled, “Amen to moving US Embassy to Jerusalem –
Tensions escalated along the Korean Peninsula over the weekend as US stealth fighters prepared for a joint military drill with South Korea, and North Korea criticized the US for its "nuclear war mania." North Korea made several statements about actions taken by the US over the weekend. North Korea´s Foreign Ministry said in a statement read on state TV that President Donald Trump and his administration are "begging for nuclear war" by engaging in what the statement referred to as an "extremely dangerous nuclear gamble," reported CNN. The statement also said that if the Korean peninsula and the world were to be pushed

Ash and smoke emissions from the Bali volcano may have slowed but experts warn that an “imminent eruption” is still a huge threat to areas surrounding Mount Agung. Mount Agung seismic activity suggests superheated magma is moving closer to the Bali volcano’s crater, according to warnings from Indonesia’s PVMBG. Gede Suantika, head of the PVMBG, said: “We can calculate it based on the monitoring results of Himawari satellite images of seismic recording data, deformation
What does Nikki Haley have in common with Ashley Judd, Jordan Peele, Rachel Maddow and Robert Mueller among others? The former South Carolina governor, currently serving as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, joins the other prominent public figures as members of the first Bloomberg 50. It’s a group of difference makers – finance and politics to tech and entertainment – singled out by the media conglomerate for their impact on global business in 2017. North Korea´s latest missile test was witnessed by crew on a passenger plane travelling from San Francisco to Hong Kong. Staff on the Cathay Pacific flight witnessed the suspected re-entry of last week´s missile test while flying over Japan, the BBC reports. The airline has since warned staff travelling across the North Pacific to keep an eye out when flying in the area. The November 29 nuclear rocket test proved to have been North Korea´s most powerful so far, an ICBM that may be able to target the eastern seaboard of the United States. The missile did
FAMILIES of US military should leave South Korea because war between America and Pyongyang is “getting close”, according to a senior US Senator and ex-Air Force Colonel. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has warned that the rising tensions between the the US and Kim Jong-un’s corrupt regime means preparations for war need to be taken. The member of the Senate Armed Services Committee warned the US was “running out of time” to prepare itself for war when speaking on CBS yesterday. He said: “I want the Pentagon to stop sending dependents and I think it’s now time to start moving American dependents out
The smoke is clearing from an explosive Mueller investigation weekend of charges, chattering, and tweets. Before the next aftershock, it might be helpful to make three points about where things stand. In ascending order of importance, they are: 1.) There is a great deal of misinformation in the commentariat about how prosecutors build cases. 2.) For all practical purposes, the collusion probe is over. While the “counterintelligence” cover will continue to be exploited so that no jurisdictional limits are placed on Special Counsel Robert Mueller, this is now an obstruction investigation. 3.) That means it is, as it has always
Did you think Barack Obama was going to follow his predecessor, George W. Bush, and fade into the background after eight years in the White House? Yeah, think again. Obama can´t stand being out of the spotlight for even one minute, which is why last week he embarked on an five-day trip to China, India and France, where he met with foreign leaders as if he were some sort of shadow president. In Paris on Saturday, Obama said there is a “temporary absence of American leadership” when it comes to tackling climate change.“I grant you that at the moment we
President Trump´s former deputy national security adviser K.T. McFarland told a friend in an email when she was on Trump´s transition team that Russia "threw" the U.S. election to Trump, The New York Times reported Saturday. McFarland reportedly wrote in the email that sanctions then-President Obama levied on Russia in response to Moscow´s election meddling would make it more difficult for Trump to improve relations with Russia, "which has just thrown the U.S.A. election to him."
The rent steals so much of your paycheck, you might have to move back in with your parents, and half your life is spent staring at the rear end of the car in front of you. You’d like to think it will get better, but when? All around you, young and old alike are saying goodbye to California.
Matt Lauer’s office, one of the places where the former Today show host allegedly assaulted women through the use of a creepy auto-lock button on the door, will soon cease to exist. According to Page Six, NBC News reportedly is demolishing the room, removing his name plate from 30 Rock, and taking down all pictures of him.Since NBC fired Lauer and Variety published its disturbing investigation into his sexual misconduct last week, Lauer’s wife has allegedly left the country and NBC has denied his request for a payout. Now, like an aggrieved ex, NBC reportedly wants to erase every trace
#BoycottSanFrancisco is going viral as San Francisco defends its sanctuary policies in the wake of the not-guilty verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial. On November 30, Breitbart News reported that a California jury found seven-time felon and five-time deported illegal alien Jose Garcia Zarate not guilty of murdering 32-year-old Kate Steinle in 2015 in the sanctuary city of San Francisco. Democratic Sen. Mark Warner (Va.) said on CNN´s "State of the Union" on Sunday that Friday was his "worst day" as a senator so far after the Republican tax bill passed the Senate. While speaking about the passage of the controversial tax bill with host Jake Tapper, Warner maintained hope that the bill may not become law as the House and Senate attempt to reconcile the differences between their two bills in conference."Is there any chance that this bill will not become law?" Tapper asked Warner."I think there still remains some chance," Warner replied. "And I was saying, Friday was my
With rumors swirling that Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton will soon head for the CIA, another Senate race may be added to the 2018 list. The safe money is for an open seat in Arkansas to stay in Republican hands. But who thought Alabama would host a competitive Senate race? If Democrats can find a credible candidate, and unruly Republican voters again fail to take their nomination process seriously, anything could happen. (Snip) If Arkansas Democrats want to field a serious Democrat, there’s only one name to consider. I’m talking, of course, about Clinton. Of course, Hillary Clinton would have to
Republican strategist Alex Castellanos said he believes "we´re closer to impeachment now than we think" during a discussion on ABC´s "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" on Sunday. Castellanos, who also serves as a CNN contributor, suggested that if Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore wins a special election next week, he could become the face of the party and hurt GOP candidates in next fall´s midterm elections. Asked by Stephanopoulos if special council Robert Mueller "posed an existential threat" to the President Trump given former national security adviser Michael Flynn´s guilty plea on Friday, the veteran strategist said "I don’t

Former president Barack Obama reportedly said more women should be in power since men are struggling to get the job done, referring to the increasing number of powerful men who have been accused of sexual assault and harassment. Speaking at an invitation-only conference, Les Napoleons, on Saturday, the 44th president told the room about “the importance of more focus on putting women in power because men seem to be having some problems these days,” French news agency AFP reported. “Not to generalize, but women seem to have a better capacity than men do, partly because of their socialization,”
I’m a liberal Democrat who didn’t realize for a long time that our mainstream media is biased. For years, I consumed news and commentary from my favorite media sites uncritically: CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times. From time to time, I watched Fox News to see what “the other side” was saying. I lived in a kind of information bubble, but like most bubble-dwellers I didn’t know I was living in one. Ironically, the 2016 election opened my eyes to this “Truman Show”-like media universe we’ve all been inhabiting. My awakening came accidentally when I realized in 2016 that I just couldn’t
