In victory for Trump, Supreme Court
dismisses travel ban case

USA Today, by Richard Wolf and Gregory Korte,

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court dismissed a major challenge to President Trump´s travel ban on majority-Muslim countries Tuesday because it has been replaced by a new version, sending the controversy back to the starting block. The ruling is a victory for the Trump administration, which had asked the court to drop the case after Trump signed a proclamation Sept. 24 that replaced the temporary travel ban on six nations with a new, indefinite ban affecting eight countries. That action made the court challenge moot, the justices ruled. "We express no view on the merits," the justices said in a one-page order. The decision

I´m not sure how much a victory was achieved because it was dismissed procedurally; superseded by a new version. There was no "win" on the merits.

Of course now the opponents will have to start all over again and the lower courts had been emboldened by the lack of a conservative justice on the court which has now been rectified. The initial actions of those lower court rulings got slapped down. Maybe those judges will be more cautious and it will be harder for the plaintiffs to win, as it always should have been.

#1 is correct. There was no victory - just more gaming of the legal system.

The Washington State AG who started this travel ban saga has been riding the crest of the lefty liberal wave ever since, with more and more anti freedom pronouncements inflating his ego.

The Supreme Court should stay out of those matters as both the US Constitution and the immigration laws give the President the authority to decide which aliens should be allowed to enter the USA when national security is a legitimate factor. The thought that any of 650 federal district judges all over the country should have the power to issue restraining orders against Presidential determinations concerning national security matters is ludicrous.

Protests of the national anthem aren’t just happening in the NFL— Tampa Bay Lightning forward J.T. Brown raised his fist in the air during The Star Spangled Banner earlier this month, and also before a pre-season game in September against the Panthers. Brown was of course following in Colin Kaepernick’s footsteps, protesting police brutality and racial injustice in America. The move caught the attention of Tampa interim police Chief Brian Dugan, who invited Brown to the academy last week. To his surprise, Brown took him up on the offer only a few days later. Opioid drugs have killed more Americans than the 19-year Vietnam war, the AIDS crisis, car accidents, suicides and homicides, a new report shows. The analysis by independent research group Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) lays bare the scale of the epidemic by analyzing the latest CDC figures. It breaks down the death tolls of the most devastating events in US history in the last 50 years, to show why addiction is the most deadly issue the country has ever faced. While the Vietnam war claimed 58,200 lives in 19 years and six months, opioids killed 64,070 Americans in 2016 alone. Experts warn last year´s

A In her latest reinvention, Hillary Clinton has emerged from the woods transformed into a self-styled Cassandra. She travels from sound stage to sound stage, reminding the public that her 2016 loss was not her fault and the Russians who undid her once-promising political career are coming again. This newest reboot is remarkable if only for its extraordinary immodesty. Few have done so much to undermine the fortunes of their ostensible allies, but Hillary Clinton is not done yet. Her vendetta has now led her to sabotage the so-called “Resistance’s” last, best hope for cutting the legs out from under the

She didn’t name names, but when Monica Lewinsky joined the viral online campaign against sexual harassment Sunday by retweeting #MeToo, the first person who came to mind was President Bill Clinton. Therein lies the problem for the Clintons with the Harvey Weinstein sexual-harassment scandal: It hits perilously close to home. Not only was Mr. Weinstein a political ally and a major donor to the Clintons and the Clinton Foundation, but his alleged sexual misconduct has refocused attention on Mr. Clinton’s own checkered past as the tide turns against powerful men who take advantage of women. “The question is on everyone’s lips: how

Jimmy Kimmel deserves credit for frankness, if nothing else. In an interview over the weekend, the ABC late-night host said he doesn’t care about losing Republican viewers. We’re a long way from Johnny Carson, whose “Tonight Show” was a national institution that enjoyed a broad audience — and was conducted like one. Carson steered clear of politics and kept his views to himself because delving into divisive politics would “hurt me as an entertainer, which is what I am.” Kimmel may be an entertainer, but he has no such inhibitions. He is willing to say “not good riddance, but riddance,” as he

LOS ANGELES — Harvey Weinstein is certainly not the first powerful man publicly and credibly accused of sexually harassing or abusing women in recent years. Since 2015, the Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, the Fox News prime-time host Bill O’Reilly and the comedian and actor Bill Cosby have suffered professional, financial or reputational setbacks after numerous women told stories of their sexual misconduct. Those stories dominated news cycles, to be sure, but the outcry accompanying Mr. Weinstein’s downfall seems louder and more impassioned — perhaps because Mr. Weinstein’s accusers include stars like Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow. “I think this is

A collective jaw dropped this week as Asia Argento, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Mira Sorvino, Rosanna Arquette and a host of other women joined Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan in speaking publicly about being harassed, mauled and even allegedly raped by Hollywood’s heavyweight gorilla, Harvey Weinstein. Media outlets ironically wrung their hands and asked in big, bold block letters: How could this have gone on for so long? If everyone knew, why didn’t anyone say anything? And the inevitable: What can be done? To answer these questions, let’s look beyond the Harvey-shaped elephant in the room. Behind the touted veneer of creative

CNN, along with other outlets and watchdog groups, had requested the memos under the Freedom of Information Act. However, a report from

As National Football League owners and players’ union representatives meet in New York today and tomorrow to discuss the players’ recent demonstrations — the kneeling, linking arms or raising fists during the national anthem — they should know how the law views these protests. This will not only tell them what the league lawfully can do; it also will reveal something about American values. There has been some confusion about the law and the anthem protests. Because the First Amendment generally treats government and corporate power differently, allowing a business to impose on its workers what the government
