‘Pure devastation’: At least 17 dead
as firefighters struggle to
weaken California fires

HEALDSBURG, Calif. — Hundreds of firefighters struggled Tuesday to weaken a series of Northern California fires, aided by more-favorable weather but still unable to contain an arc of flames that has killed 17 people, destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and battered the region’s lifeblood wine industry. The fast-moving fires swept through densely populated neighborhoods, causing some residents to flee from their homes in the middle of the night as smoke filled their rooms. One couple had to jump into their pool as flames rushed across their land, taking occasional gasps for air as flames lapped at their backs. Officials said that 180

Fires in North Mendocino County. Three people were killed in the Potter Valley fire, and the town is gone. Redwood Valley no longer exists, nor the homes of several friends. The Redwood Valley fire shot northward up into the Willits Valley yesterday afternoon. Its western edge is about 7 miles east of Willits, burning to the north end of the valley. The closest point is a ridge away from a development, Pine Mountain, whose access road is about 5 miles east of town. Today Cal Fire began staging dozers on East Side Road at the base of Pine Mountain. Should the wind shift towards the west Willits would be threatened.

PG&E has cut off natural gas service in Willits. We´ve lost both cell and land line phones. The fiber optic internet service is also down, blessedly we have satellite out here on the homestead and I still have email. (We are 15 miles north of Willits.) Ham radio operators are stationed at all the north county hospitals and large nursing homes, and part of the county´s emergency communications system. Timber King has been manning the station at Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits every day from 6am-6pm. Our new hospital is only a few miles west of Pine Mountain. I´m able to monitor the fire on his home ham set.

Yesterday the winds were coming up from the south and we experienced some heavy ash fall. The smoke was so thick I could barely see the ridge across from my house, less than a ¼ mile away. It was like an overcast day but everything was pink. The sun was a bright red ball in the sky. Today the wind shifted and we cleared considerably. Not much time for Ldotting. Take care.

I´ve lived in Napa since 1969. The sky has been dark and smoky since Monday. Moon is blood red. Smoke smell so strong. Fires all around us... Many people I know have been evacuated more than once. I am in town and my daughter concerned that the ways out of town are dwindling. Fires to the north, west, east and south of us...

Mendocino County update: Cell phone service and internet was restored this morning, but land lines are still down in parts of Willits. A temporary transponder has been installed to replace the one that burned Monday on Laughlin Peak. The county emergency communications system has been shut down and TK was home at 9am.

We are crystal clear this morning at the homestead. The inversion layer lifted and the fixed-wing bombers can get back into the air today, which is a blessing as our fire crews are exhausted. There is limited mutual aid. The dozer line east of Pine Mountain held overnight and that end of the fire is the assigned first priority for the bombers. (I love ham radio in an emergency!) We are under a Red Flag wind warning with gusts up to 30mph coming out of the north. The breeze is already picking up here. I the wind stays from the north the fire can be turned back onto itself.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

TQ, I hope the rains come soon. From the images we see in the media, it´s indeed horrible. So many families have lost everything they have.

Back in the 1970s, I fought wildfires for the US Forest Services as a summer job while in college in New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Montana. It was dangerous and brutal work in conditions hot enough to melt the rubber on your boots. I don´t ever want to see another fire tornado.

Having contributed already to Team Rubicon for those affected by Harvey and Maria, you folks in California, TQ, are next on my list.

California-based auction house Julien´s Auctions has sold Donald Trump´s sketch of the Empire State Building to a winning bid that far exceeded initial expectations. The 12-inch-by-9-inch drawing, made with a black marker, was created by Trump in the early 1990s during an art festival in what would later become the Mar-a-Lago club. According to the note attached to the lot, "during this time the Empire State Building occupied a great deal of Trump´s attention as he was attempting to take over the iconic New York landmark." At its 1990s public debut, the sketch fetched under $100 at a charity auction. As

As wildfires continue to burn in California, here’s a look at the size of the burned areas compared to cities – and even a state. California’s major wildfires have burned more than 330 square miles, the state Governor’s Office of Emergency Service said Tuesday. That is about equal to the size of Sacramento, about 100.1 square miles; Fresno, about 114.7 square miles; San Francisco, about 46,87 square miles; and Oakland, about 77.86 square miles, combined. The area burned has surpassed the size of New York City’s five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island – which measure

Let’s put the Uranium One scandal in perspective: The cool half-million bucks the Putin regime funneled to Bill Clinton was five times the amount it spent on those Facebook ads — the ones the media-Democrat complex ludicrously suggests swung the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump. The Facebook-ad buy, which started in June 2015 — before Donald Trump entered the race — was more left-wing agitprop (ads pushing hysteria on racism, immigration, guns, etc.) than electioneering. The Clintons’ own long-time political strategist Mark Penn estimates that just $6,500 went to actual electioneering. (You read that right: 65 hundred dollars.) By

The business decision of the NFL to isolate and ridicule well over half of their fan (customer) base will easily, very easily, go down in history as the most stunningly stupid decision in the history of any American business enterprise. The vast majority of NFL fans held a middle-class, center-right, common sense, and patriotic outlook toward sports and entertainment overall. In essence most of the NFL fan base are/were positively MAGA-minded. The major developing stories this week have been so scantily and poorly covered in the mainstream press that you may want an easy primer. To fully understand it you have to look at alternative media because just as Harvey Weinstein counted on complicit enablers -- his colleagues, victims and the press -- Hillary Clinton, Robert Mueller and a cast of characters, including a press determined to cover for them have hidden what occurred. It’s taken some time, to be sure, but the evidence of their wrongdoing is becoming harder and harder to hide. Stalling and misdirection are their last redoubt.

Most reporters and editors are liberal — a now dated Pew Research Center poll found that liberals outnumber conservatives in the media by some 5 to 1, and that comports with my own anecdotal experience at National Public Radio. When you are liberal, and everyone else around you is as well, it is easy to fall into groupthink on what stories are important, what sources are legitimate and what the narrative of the day will be. This may seem like an unusual admission from someone who once ran NPR, but it is borne of recent experience. Spurred by a fear that
