Once a titan of Canadian retail, Sears Canada announced Tuesday that it is going out of business, putting 12,000 people out of work and shuttering all operations nationwide. Among the first to lose their jobs will be most of the 800 people at head office near Dundas Square, who will be let go next week. Liquidation sales at stores are scheduled to begin Oct. 19 and to take 10 to 14 weeks. The chain was forced into closure after a bid by executive chairman Brandon Stranzl to save the company was unsuccessful. “Following exhaustive efforts, no viable transaction for the company

Sadly, Sears USA can´t be far behind. The last few times I´ve visited the local Sears outlet, you could count customers on one hand. The once thriving appliance department not staffed, automotive department closed, low inventory of tools.

Appears the kid Prime Minister is not Making Canada Great Again. Sometimes I get nostalgic and think about Radio Shack and Sears. But then I can´t remember the last time I was in one. Loved getting the Sears and Roebuck catalog when I was a kid. Now we have the internet.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Sylvester Dawson will vote Tuesday in Alabama´s Senate election, but he´s hardly thrilled about the choices. "Honestly speaking, I´m not that excited about either one of them," Dawson said of Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore as he shaved a client at the barber shop he´s run for 23 years in Birmingham´s historic black business district. ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Sen. Al Franken´s departure from the Senate solves one problem for Democrats, demonstrating their will to push out one of their own when sexual harassment allegations pile up. Now they must worry about keeping one more vulnerable seat when they already had their hands full in next year´s election. Franken said on Thursday he would resign, just a day after new allegations brought the number of women alleging he had groped or tried to kiss them to at least eight. In a sometimes emotional speech delivered on the Senate floor, Franken said some of the

MSNBC host Chris Matthews said “crazy” evangelical Christians in the South are uninformed about President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel because they have “mythical beliefs” about the ancient city. “Don’t think this isn’t related to Alabama next week,” Mr. Matthews said Wednesday on “Morning Joe,” referring to the Alabama Senate race. “It is related, because it’s the Christian evangelicals down there with their crazy ideas about Israel, which is, I don’t know, mythical. They don’t understand the situation over there and how tricky it is ethnically and tribally. They don’t care, because it’s a religious

Al Franken’s resignation speech on Thursday seemed less heartfelt than grudging. He cast it not as an act of atonement — he continues to deny the charges largely and acknowledged through his stifled rage that his previous quasi-apologies had hastened his demise — but a reluctant act of gallantry. He was submitting docilely to the “broader conversation” on sexual harassment, he said, while signaling that his replacement, to whom he referred as “her,” would be a female pol embodying that conversation. The speech followed the usual pattern of lying pols: I didn’t do it, I’m only quitting because I am a

I´m pretty much done with the sex scandals. They were fun, but they´re just going to have to carry on without me. If someone broke the law and you can prove it, prosecute him. If someone violated the rules of his organization, eject him. Other than that, if women have forgotten the fine art of slapping a man in the face, there´s not a whole hell of a lot society can do for them. You keep silent for forty years and then ruin a man´s career with an unprovable allegation — and that makes you a hero? Not to me. Look,

Pope Francis has suggested he wants to make a change to The Lord´s Prayer, widely known among the faithful as the “Our Father.” Specifically, the Catholic leader said in an interview Wednesday he would prefer to adjust the phrase “lead us not into temptation,” saying that it too strongly suggested that God leads people to sin. “That is not a good translation,” the pope said, according to Reuters. The phrase “do not let us fall into temptation,” which the Catholic Church in France has previously decided to use, would be a more appropriate alternative, Francis said.

Opposition research must have started as soon as, if not before, Donald Trump announced he was running for president. I am sure many of Trump´s Republican opponents, as well as Hillary Clinton, the DNC, liberal interest groups, the media, and others were searching far and wide for trash on Trump. The research must not have produced enough trash, or else why would the DNC and Hillary have paid Fusion GPS so handsomely to create what is clearly a false document? Fusion GPS trafficked the document to the Justice Department and intelligence officials. They obviously had seen how many intelligence officials
