Screams of ´terror as flames barreled down´:
Relentless California fires rage for third day

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — A cluster of devastating wildfires that has killed at least 13 people and destroyed more than 1,500 homes and businesses raged virtually unchecked across the state´s treasured wine country for a third day Tuesday. Tens of thousands of Californians fled their homes, many of them holing up in shelters that authorities said could be operating for several days. Power outages and cellphone disruptions added to the chaos amid the fast-spreading blazes, prompting hundreds of missing persons reports. The fires, fueled by dry grasses and brush, heat and low humidity, were fanned by wind gusts reaching almost 80 mph.

LOS ANGELES — Sonoma County said it had received more than 100 phone calls to its missing person hotline as wind-powered wildfires swept through California wine country overnight, destroying at least 1,500 homes. Officials said they were combing through the calls and believed some could be duplicates. At least 10 people have died in the blazes as more than a dozen wildfires consumed parts of California wine country. Gov. Jerry Brown declared an emergency in eight counties, including Napa and Sonoma, and asked for a federal declaration of a major disaster for the entire state. Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano said seven people

I went to Hollywood when I was 23. I had made a low-budget film, won an award at a prestigious festival, scored an agent and made a TV deal all within six months. It was a fairy tale most people will never experience, and I knew, as well as a 23-year-old can know anything, that I was getting a pretty great deal. I bounced from meeting to meeting with the joy of Cinderella at the ball. These meetings, almost always with men, were rife with acts of everyday sexism — the presumption that I must want to make small “intimate” movies,

As Democrats denounce Weinstein,

Washington Many Democratic office holders were quick to repudiate disgraced Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein following a bombshell report detailing decades of alleged sexual harassment. But former Democratic Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton -- all of whom have longstanding ties to Weinstein, a major Democratic Party fundraiser -- have not publicly addressed the accusations. Representatives for the Clintons have not responded to comment for this story, and Obama´s office declined to comment. The recent report in The New York Times cataloged accusations of sexual harassment against the filmmaker that spanned three decades. Three days

Singapore scientists crack the durian genome

SINGAPORE: For Professor Teh Bin Tean, the deputy director of the National Cancer Centre, the endeavour to map the complete genetic blueprint of durian began with a love for the fruit. “As a scientist, I was also curious about what genes are behind the durian’s smell, taste and spiny husk,” he said. A team of five researchers from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and Duke-NUS Medical School began the project in early 2015. The team used state-of-the-art sequencing platforms to map the genome of the Musang King or Mao Shan Wang durian. According to the team, they received funding of S$500,000 from

To hear the press tell it, President Trump is making unreasonable demands by asking for a deal to allow the illegal immigrants known as DREAMERS to stay in the U.S. In fact, he´s making tradeoff demands which so outrage Democrats´ delicate sensibilities that not one could possibly be approved by them for a deal. His real aim in asking for tradeoffs, then, must be to scupper the deal. All full of tears and flapdoodle. Democrats are returning Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein´s campaign contributions in the wake of revelations that he was a voracious sexual predator. But not to Weinstein, whose donations are tainted by the supposed disconnect between the women´s rights they claim to champion and Weinstein´s porcine behavior: Just to themselves. They´re laundering Harvey´s dirty dollars through Democrat front groups dedicated to electing more Democrats. These include Emily´s List, Emerge America, and Higher Heights. And it´s only a fraction of what Weinstein donated to the Democratic National Committee anyway: $30,000 out of a collective total of $300,000.

If you are surprised by the news that Harvey Weinstein of Miramax fame, a man well known for profane tirades and physical altercations and scrounging M&Ms off movie theater floors, is also the sort of charmer who loafs around semi-nude while asking subordinates for “back” massages, then you can be surprised by just about anything: the sun rising in the east, the fact that movie stars employ plastic surgeons, the news that “The Artist” didn’t actually deserve to win Best Picture. Weinstein’s response to this paper’s impressive investigatory work was to issue a statement promising to spend even more lavishly on

Harvey Weinstein was every bit the sleazy Hollywood caricature recent reports have made him out to be. When I was working as a waitress, I watched numerous times as a string of young women — some seemingly no older than 21 — entered the restaurant for long, flirty dinners with him, even though he was married with five children. These women were all the same: vaguely European, always beautiful, stylishly dressed, and totally out of place next to someone like him. The staff could usually tell that the woman was there to meet him before she had even said a word.

Collective guilt assuaged, the left is now crowing that the IRS was evenhanded all along in its targeting of tax-exempt groups for political harassment under the Obama administration. It wasn´t just the Tea Party, it was plenty of leftist groups, too, so the claim goes, one that was made a few years ago without much merit. And now with a new Treasury Department report out, I still don´t buy it. One good example of this thinking is from the Washington Post´s Paul Farhi, who would have you think, hyuk hyuk, in his vaguely patronizing accusation, that the mea culpas now belong

On March 8, 2017, a bronze idol appeared on the streets of Manhattan paying obeisance to both the tenets of identity politics and liberal apprehension about the financial industry. It is the figure of a female—a young girl—standing defiant, arms akimbo, in the face of the symbol of heedless capital generation: the iconic Wall Street Bull. Democratic throngs fell to their knees, suspending all critical thought in the process. Had they maintained their composure, a few of them might have noticed that they were being used. The icon deemed “Fearless Girl” was feted by influencers and opinion-makers on the left as

Tired enough that Jones has now publicly said that if his team doesn’t respect the flag, they’re not going to play. Jones was asked by Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News, about two Cowboys players who raised their fists at the end of the anthem. Jones said he did not see the raised fists. But then, Jones made a definitive statement about how he wants to see his team to handle the anthem from now on. According to Pro Football Talk, Jones

Washington — Never mind the disease and slavery wrought by Christopher Columbus´ voyage — or the fact that he didn´t actually "discover" the New World. President Donald Trump´s first presidential proclamation of Columbus Day gave only high praise to the 15th century explorer, a stark contrast to the proclamation made by President Barack Obama one year earlier. "The permanent arrival of Europeans to the Americas was a transformative event that undeniably and fundamentally changed the course of human history and set the stage for the development of our great Nation," Trump said in his proclamation. "I am running for re-election to the Senate. Lots more to do: ending gun violence, combating climate change, access to health care," Feinstein said. She would be running for her fifth full term. She joined the Senate in 1992 after winning a special election. She had a serious challenge in 1994 from wealthy GOP Rep. Michael Huffington but has cruised since. On Sunday, Feinstein told NBC´s "Meet the Press" that "I´m ready for a good fight.

A speeding bicyclist has taken away something dear to Virginia Pearsall. “I can’t feel safe on the trail anymore,” the 67-year-old Spokane woman said on Friday, walking with a slight limp and her left arm in a sling. The Spokane River Centennial Trail running through Kendall Yards was a major attraction for Pearsall and her husband to move into the development overlooking the Spokane River Gorge. “I walk the trail almost every day,” she said Friday. “Or at least I did.” On Sept. 22, Pearsall was walking near Trail Milepost 24 at Nettleton Street with her sister when she heard someone behind her yell,

It isn’t enough for California to contemplate its own state-run single payer health care system that would require, at a minimum, tripling the state budget. Now a lawmaker wants to have the state ban gasoline-powered cars by the year 2040. I certainly hope California follows through and tries this. If nothing else, it will provide wonderful black market opportunities. Think of all the meth labs that will convert to mini-refineries, not to mention the smuggling. It is doubtful we can legally confiscate existing cars, so look for California’s rolling stock to become the equivalent of all those 57 Chevys and

Why now? That was the first question many were asking this weekend after explosive revelations came to light about Harvey Weinstein, one of Hollywood´s most powerful men, and decades of alleged sexual harassment on his part.First, it was a question about Hollywood, where tales about Weinstein and his behavior with women had circulated for years, yet news outlets had been unable to nail down the story. But it also fed into a broader question, one that touched on the recent fates of Bill Cosby, the late Roger Ailes, and Bill O´Reilly — all rich and hugely powerful men brought down,

The New York Times last week broke the story of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein’s long record of sexual harassment. Actresses including Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd came forward to detail Weinstein’s depredations, and so did former employees of the man who founded one of the most important independent film companies of the last 30 years, Miramax. The details were so jarring and the trail of abuse so long, that it was impossible to read the story and not come away wondering: How did no one know what he was doing? A whole lot of fur has been flying since last Thursday, when The New York Times published a game-changing investigative story about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct that in lightning speed brought the mogul to his knees. He apologized and took an immediate leave of absence from the company he co-founded, but that wasn’t enough. His board members and legal advisers have been resigning en masse. And as new, ugly details emerge of three decades of settlements for sex-related offenses, he’s quickly becoming a national pariah.
