Bush’s ‘Team 43’ and Our Wounded
Heroes, Healing Together

National Review Online, by Marc Siegel

This past weekend, in Waco, Texas, more than 200 guests — wounded war heroes and their supporters – attended a dinner in their honor, sponsored by Robert Agostinelli, chairman of the board of the National Review Institute. These warriors came to Texas to participate in the yearly mountain-bike ride at the ranch of their former commander in chief, George W. Bush, a president who is deeply involved with their healing process as they recover from war wounds both visible and invisible. Agostinelli spoke directly to our war heroes: After 9/11, each of you had a choice, and your choice was

Bush and his neocons are ultimately responsible for that miserable rotten no-victory war for those pathetic ungrateful Muslims, and the permanent injuries these vets sustained. I suppose remembering the vets is more than Obama would do, but still, I can´t give Bush full credit. Basically, it´s the least he can do, given his errors.

Because of his bromance with Bill & Hillary Clinton, absolutely no criticism of obama total silence, his open hostility and criticism of President Trump, his desire for amnesty and open borders I have no use for him nor do I care what he does.

Didn´t Trump have a bromance with the lovely Clintons at one time?

How four GOP senators guided a
tax-bill victory behind the scenes

Senate Republicans breathed a collective sigh of relief early Saturday morning when a $1.4 trillion tax bill that had teetered on the brink of failure passed with only one GOP defection. Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Senate GOP Conference Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) played key roles in helping Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) salvage the bill, according to lawmakers and aides familiar with the process. So did two other Senate Finance Committee members — Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio), two of McConnell’s advisers on tax issues. Cornyn negotiated the deal that secured the votes of Sens. Ron

I’m a liberal Democrat who didn’t realize for a long time that our mainstream media is biased. For years, I consumed news and commentary from my favorite media sites uncritically: CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times. From time to time, I watched Fox News to see what “the other side” was saying. I lived in a kind of information bubble, but like most bubble-dwellers I didn’t know I was living in one. Ironically, the 2016 election opened my eyes to this “Truman Show”-like media universe we’ve all been inhabiting. My awakening came accidentally when I realized in 2016 that I just couldn’t

Matt Lauer, like Charlie Rose and Mark Halperin before him, is a journalist out of a job after his employer fired him for sexually harassing female colleagues. It’s good news that real penalties are now leveled on men who harass — after centuries of the costs mostly befalling the women who endure harassment. But the deep cultural rot that has corroded nearly all of our institutions and every corner of our culture is not just about a few badly behaved men. Sexual harassment, and the sexism it’s predicated on, involves more than the harassers and the harassed; when the harassers

The political stunt that former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray tried to pull recently in a failed attempt to name his successor was the culmination of a five-year reign at a rogue agency marked by incompetence and malfeasance. I and many other CFPB critics believe that newly appointing Acting Director Mick Mulvaney – who retains his job as director of the Office of Management and Budget – is the right person, in the interim, to head the CFBP. However, the only way we are going to completely undo the years of pain and punishment the CFPB has inflected on

This story starts differently than most sexual-harassment accounts out there. It begins with the accused harasser honorably “retiring” after a successful career, which sets off an investigation — my own — into whether there were other women who worked with this man who’d felt as, well, violated as I did. Violated in a way that felt sexual, though the man in question never touched me. When I filed a complaint about him with his employer in February 2017 — six months before the Weinstein story broke— I wasn’t even sure whether my experience counted as sexual harassment. In August, John Hockenberry,

On Friday morning, shortly after the news broke that Mike Flynn had pleaded guilty to lying to the F.B.I. about his communication with Russian officials, the former national security adviser and former Trump mega-loyalist issued a statement defending his decision. The move to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe would help “set things right,” for Flynn; it’s in “the best interest of my family,” he said, referring to the speculation that his son, Mike Flynn Jr., was also in legal jeopardy. This appeal to family loyalty was not without some potential irony. Flynn’s plea, which stipulates that an unnamed

Despite everything we know, or think we know, about the private life and opinions of Judge Roy Moore, I have no doubt that he will win the Alabama special election on December 12, and succeed to Attorney General Jefferson Sessions´s old Senate seat. I don´t think that he will win by a landslide—there are Alabama conservatives who cannot set aside the accounts of his behavior, and even deep-red Alabama has its share of liberals and Democrats—but I have every expectation he will gain the necessary majority of votes. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is increasingly alarmed by what he sees as secret talks between Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman -- fearful that the discussions could backfire and tip the region into chaos, according to three people familiar with Tillerson’s concerns. The central goal of the Kushner-Prince Mohammed negotiations, as described by two people with knowledge of the talks, is for an historic agreement featuring the creation of a Palestinian state or territory backed financially by a number of countries including Saudi Arabia, which could put tens

Two possibilities arise from the guilty plea of former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Flynn’s plea marks the beginning of the end of the Trump administration. Flynn’s plea marks the end of the desperate hope that America will be delivered from the Trump presidency by impeachment and removal from office on the grounds that his campaign colluded with Russia to win him the 2016 election. There are other ancillary events one can easily imagine. For example, Trump could fire independent counsel Robert Mueller and/or pardon Flynn and others. But those moves would eventually make the end of his administration far more likely,

There seems to be some controversy in the “fake versus real” debate on Christmas trees. I proudly stand for fake trees. I don’t need any judgments from you “naturalists.” I know all the arguments in favor of the real tree: a real tree is more authentic, it smells nice, and it reminds you of the old days when you and your Paw would go out on a frigid December morning with axe in hand and chop down a tree yourselves. But I don’t think you ever did that, did you? My chief problem with real Christmas trees is the needles. They get

The swift revolution against sexual harassment is ending the careers of a series of media "icons," left and right. But perhaps nowhere is this hypocrisy more notable (and deeper) than at PBS and NPR. These were the entities that made sexual harassment the boiling feminist issue when Anita Hill testified during Clarence Thomas´ confirmation hearing in 1991. Here´s an easy question: Why didn´t this sudden spirit of self-discovery and investigation happen back then? Or in any year since? It could have happened when then-President Bill Clinton settled with Paula Jones in 1998, or even last year as these networks enjoyed reporting

Hush up and stand. You might think it’s that simple, given the significant step the NFL is taking in partnering with players for a social justice initiative that will involve an estimated $89 million over seven years. Not quite. The NFL’s PR problem stemming from the national anthem protests is hardly squashed just because the league is throwing money at its migraine headache of an issue. Sure, Malcolm Jenkins, the Philadelphia Eagles safety who is one of the key leaders of the Players Coalition that struck a deal with the NFL, has declared that he’ll no longer raise a fist
