Why ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Proved
a Box Office Disappointment

The future looks bleak for the dystopian sci-fi flick, Blade Runner 2049. Though the sequel to the 1982 cult classic topped the box office this weekend, its $31.5 million haul was well short of expectations and a huge disappointment for a highly-anticipated film crowned with glowing reviews. Critics extolled the visual experience created by director Denis Villeneuve, and long-time fans appreciated the return of original franchise star Harrison Ford. The film also boasted one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, Ryan Gosling, fresh off his La La Land success, as the lead. “This was a watershed movie,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior

Other sources said they were expecting close to $100 million opening. Only got 1/3 of that.

I am looking forward to seeing it because I am a huge fan of the original. Having said that, you wouldn´t catch me dead in a theater on the opening weekend. I think the film will do okay in the long run, but people my age don´t go to the movies on their opening weekends. Our local independent theater will have it in about three weeks, and the costs to go there for the film and concessions are less than half of a major chain.
From what I understand the movie is well made but your average millennial wont understand it, and it is two hours forty minutes long.

(contd.) With that length it doesn´t have as many showings per screen per day. That will also affect box office totals at the beginning.

"Glowing reviews" really don´t mean much. Some of these people are paid or bribed to say nice things.

Not that it would influence me one way or the other. I don´t do hollywood.

Beware bargain matinees and the like.
Projectors use a lot of juice and the cut rate showings crank them back making dark/night scenes hard to see.

I loved the original but ´meh´ is about as enthusiastic as I can get for the sequel. Not compelling but interesting for the first 2/3rds it jumps the shark when Harrison Ford appears. He can do two expressions now: bewildered and slightly angry/bored. Plus, he really, really hasn´t aged well. But, maybe I´m being too harsh...maybe his facial expressions were merely his reaction to finding himself in such a convoluted, mindless, ridiculous last third of a sequel to a classic, brilliant movie. The political tidbits strewn throughout the movie: an agrarian crash devastating the planet in 2020 (just three years!), a ´Resistance´, a justification for suicide if the cause is just, rankle, but could have been accepted for the great soundtrack, the great visuals, the sheer size of the movie, but for an ending that ain´t ´Rosebud´.

I continue to re-watch the original, even though my wife hates it, as it´s one of my favorites of all times. But I can wait for Redbox and see it for $1. What´s a few more months after a 35 year wait?

The health of a nation’s economy and the health of its people are connected, but in some surprising ways. At times like these, when the economy is strong and unemployment is low, research has found that death rates rise. At least, in the short term. In the long term, economic growth is good for health. What’s going on? One study of European countries just before and during the Great Recession found that a one-percentage-point increase in the unemployment rate is associated with an 0.5 percent decline in the overall mortality rate. Former President George W. By chance, Bush was standing in the same spot at the Time Warner Center where former President Barack Obama made a similar plea for democracy and American leadership in late September, shortly after President Donald Trump had finished a belligerent, isolationist speech to the United Nations
