N.F.L.: Steelers Plan to Stay in
Locker Room During Anthem

New York Times, by Ken Belson*

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 9/24/2017 11:50:59 AM

N.F.L. players and owners, already on edge after critical statements made by President Trump at a rally on Friday night, woke up on game day to another series of tweets from the president, this time calling for football fans to boycott N.F.L. games unless the league fires or suspends players who refuse to stand for the national anthem. (Snip) Steelers Won’t Participate in Anthem The Pittsburgh Steelers team does not plan to emerge from the locker room in Chicago until after the national anthem. “We’re not going to play politics,” Tomlin told CBS. “We’re football players, we’re football coaches. We’re not participating

Comments:
This is shameful, disgraceful and appalling! This is extremely disturbing. You can just see their next goal, that the National Anthem not be played at all. We sure are heading down a really dark road in this country and it´s extremely upsetting.

time to start contacting advertisers about this. Advertisers need to pull their ads from these games.

They can stay wherever they damn well please.

Without the American people who are their fans, fill their stadiums, watch their games on TV, wear their shirts and caps, they are nothing. Absolutely nothing. Just a bunch of big babies suited up in bizarre uniforms chasing each other up and down the field with a pointy ball. That’s all.

American Greatness’s Chris Buskirk did a great article on how Kaepernick and Curry (NBA) have burst the sports bubble. Just posted. It and this article are well worth a read.

e won´t know until the dust settles, but it seems to me the owners and the NFL are not on the "right side of history" here.

Perhaps if they had a third foot, they´d shoot that, too?

It´s now up to fans to do what Trump suggested, get up and walk out. How many, after paying hundreds of dollars to be there, are going to do that? Plus, there´s more players not kneeling. What about them? Trumps got the owners between a rock and a hard place. They, obviously, need the fans money, but they can´t afford to have the players take the next step, which is to refuse to play. They have no one to blame but themselves, because they let it get this far by humouring these protesters in the first place. When you let your product play politics with your brand, on your dime, you´ve joined their side. Live with the consequences.

Jim Gray was just on FNC and said it is shameful that politics has now entered into the NFL, strongly suggesting that it is because of Trump. He didn´t mention that Kaepernick is the one who started this horrific state of affairs.

He and the insufferable Arthel Neville (Obama lover who never hides her bias) agreed. Gray did state that the National Anthem should be respected but that the players had their right to free speech. That is the biggest bunch of BS and lie ever told. They are NOT entitled to free speech as a part of a business, free speech relates to the government as we all know. He also stated that the boycotts (because of Trump) and loss of money would be blamed on him. This is going to get very bad.

It truly pains me, as a lifetime football fan, to say that I am done with the NFL. It will be interesting to see what Rush Limbaugh has to say tomorrow - as the Steelers are his favorite team.

Going to watch golf today, with perhaps a bit of QVC. Next Saturday, Roll Tide!

NFL TV viewers, don´t watch, boycott sponsors.
Ticket holders, cancel season tickets. Others who attend the game, find something else to do like spend quality time with the family.
It would take one season for the NFL front office to catch on. Hit them where it hurts....in the pocketbook. Nothing speaks louder than money.

Because President Trump says something you don´t like doesn´t mean you disrespect the Flag, the National Anthem or the country over it!!

Maybe Americans should plan to stay home from the games and turn the NFL´s 200 million dollar advertising shortfall into a 400 million dollar hole!

While not watching the NFL, one might avoid ordering a Papa John´s pizza, too. On October 15th some may instead call their local outlet and just let them know there will be no pizza ordered today due to their continued support of the NFL as an "Official Sponsor". Pull out a marker, some cardboard and a lawn chair to take the protest to their door. Sorry for the local franchisee taking the financial hit, but that´s how it is.

If they stay in the locker room, maybe the "fans" can stay home. The football stadium is no place for politics. Shame on the owners and the coaches for allowing this to happen. Suppose all of the soldiers decided to stay in the "locker room" when they were told to go out and face an enemy. Where would America be today or it might not be at all.

Just sit there in the darkened living room and watch the game and pretend that those disrespecting the Anthem for which many bled and died for, is being disrespected by our enemies useful idiots.

FTA:“We’re not going to play politics,” Coach Mike Tomlin told CBS before the game. “We’re football players, we’re football coaches. We’re not participating in the anthem today. Not to be disrespectful to the anthem, but to remove ourselves from this circumstance. People shouldn’t have to choose."

Tomlin´s first part is correct - they are football people. But his attempt to sit on the fence is not. This is an issue liberals have forced on the country and much as people like Tomlin might want to avoid the controversy and just do their jobs, liberals make that impossible. You cannot "not choose".

OP is right. The next demand or act of appeasement by the owners will be to stop playing the anthem altogether. Then Tomlin and the his boys can come out and play their big, tough game without fear of criticism or controversy...until the next "issue".(Hey, maybe the NFL should stop keeping score. It hurts the losing fans´ feelings and sometimes makes them react with violence.) Regardless,I, for one, will not be watching.

There is concept in economics called "substitute" goods - things that can easily replace one thing if the price of that thing gets too high. NFL football is far from a necessity of life. When the price in aggravation gets too high there are many, many substitute goods to fill a Sunday afternoon. I have already found several.

Steelers #78, Alejanrdo Villanueva, Army Ranger, recipient of the Bronze Star, stood at the entrance of the tunnel, hand over heart and sang every word of the National Anthem.

Quote-" I respect the players right to protest but I have an obligation to my country and my fallen friends to respect their sacrifice. They will never get to protest and they will never get to watch another game."

Tend to agree regarding keeping politics out of sports, but what the Steelers did is not the answer. The National Anthem is NOT POLITICS. The National Anthem is about LOYALTY TO ONES COUNTRY.

Grew up outside of Pittsburgh. Started watching the Steelers in 78. In 79 and 80, they won the Super Bowl, and I was hooked. Lifelong Steeler fan here. During winter, I wear a Steeler parka. It is the equivalent of wearing gang colors. Total strangers that are Steeler fans walk up to me cheering on the Steelers. Steeler nation. I´m no longer near Pittsburgh, but whenever the Steelers were televised nationally, I watched them.

This is a major league turnoff, and I´m sure I can find other things on television to watch. Currently watching NASCAR.

NFL, are you listening?

What Trump said was at a political rally which was the correct place for it regardless of whether you agree with him or not. If BLM and its supporters want to make a statement, fine, but do it at a rally not a sporting event.

I believe the contracts with these players have provisions that they are not to act or participate in any way that would demean the Character of their employer, I.E. the team for which they are playing.

The owners have every right to make them sit out or fire them on the spot. These nut cases feel comfortable that they will hurt the team if they are benched and therefore their employers have no choice but to put up with this nonsense.

Money talks! Bench once. Twice and they are out on the street. They are paid for per game. Don´t tell me they won´t bend and fall over if they are stripped of that pay check.

When the MLB went on strike in 1994-1995 it changed the game for ever. Dave Stewart a twenty game winner said "It was one of the most embarrassing moments that´s ever happened to Major League Baseball. I wish I had never come back.´´

Goose Gossage and others left the game and never went back. "The strike got me, man,´´ Gossage told USA TODAY Sports. "It got a bunch of us. We faded in, and we faded out."

"I never did announce my retirement. Even today, 20 years later, I still haven´t announced my retirement." He just walked away!

Unless the NFL owners take a stand and demand respect not only for the game but the country that has given them this opportunity the NFL will never be the same.

Trump is but defending the Star Spangled Banner and that for which it stands. Don´t they even know the history of our flag and our national anthem?! How could any President simply ignore these lime-light exhibitionists, PC political pawns that they are, who are viewed by many youths & fans as heroes, when they set examples for such disrespect for this country? ...They have no shame, no respect, no common decency and became terrible role models when they forgot the reason they were on the field and instead chose to insult this country.

#16´s astute observation and profound comment encapsulates the core of this controversy.

Soldier´s Field and Pittsburgh Steelers are names that represent two symbolic historical American forces that one could not imagine refusing to stand for and honor the emblems of American unity and greatness.

NFL team owners and management unfortunately have allowed a mediocre football player to embroil them in a divisive political mess.

Hopefully, most of us recognize and revere the real sacrifice that, by the grace of Almighty God, has built this great nation and preserved what too many misguided Americans take for granted today. Hiding away in a locker room, or corporate offices, or anywhere else does not remove from the fray.

Some sacrificed their health and livelihood, and perhaps more, and some gave all to give us what Americans enjoy today. How shameful is it to not even have the courage to stand and speak out in defense of the emblems that represent that sacrifice?!

At least the mediocre player has the courage of his convictions, even if he may be instigated and supported by those with an anti-America agenda.

God bless you, Steeler #78, Alejandro Villanueva, and thank you for you continued service to the United States of America! So very thankful for you, and others, for your example!

O say can you see by the dawns early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming..whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight oer the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming and the rockets red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there O say does that star spangled banner yet wave oer the land of the FREE and the home of the BRAVE....I love this land!

Look´s like the almighty dollar is more sacred to the NFL and team owners than the anthem to this great nation. The anthem and our flag symbolizes the freedoms we have. Many men and women of all races have laid down their lives to keep this country free. For these high paid thugs to show this kind of disrespect is tantamount to spitting on the graves of our fallen heroes. No more NFL or NBA for me!

Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has completed his one-week sex rehab program. A psychologist taking part in his treatment told TMZ that Weinstein would remain in Arizona for a month or so after his week of outpatient ´intensive therapy´ ends on Saturday. Weinstein was ´invested in the program´ and had focused on ´dealing with his anger, his attitude toward others, boundary work and the beginnings of work on empathy,´ the psychologist told the outlet with Weinstein´s permission. The psychologist downplayed previous reports that the 65-year-old film producer had fallen asleep in group sessions and ranted about conspiracy theories. ´He showed up for all the

More than 150 Afghan troops brought to the U.S. for military training have gone AWOL since 2005, with 13 of them still unaccounted for and perhaps living as here illegal immigrants now, an inspector general said in a new report Friday. Part of the problem is that the U.S. never puts the trainees through an in-person interview and exempts them from registering as aliens when they arrive — both steps that other visitors would normally have to go through. In-person interviews and requiring the troops to register beforehand would help the government gauge whether someone is likely to go absent without leave,

Benjamin Wittes, a friend of former FBI Director James Comey, said that he´s unable to say how far President Trump is willing to push the legal bounds of the presidency because it would involve "looking into his soul" — and he´s not quite sure Trump has one. Asked by former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara on his podcast "Stay Tuned with Preet" how far he thinks Trump is willing to stretch the constitutional constraints of his office, Wittes said he would need to look into Trump´s soul to answer that question. Former President George W. Former President George W. Bush emerged from retirement on Thursday to stage a broad attack on President Donald Trump and the movement that supports him. Without mentioning Trump by name, Bush accused him of “casual cruelty” in political discourse, of distorting nationalism into “nativism,” and of emboldening bigotry and white supremacy. He called for a renewed commitment to American global leadership and domestic citizenship. It was a call to national unity — against Trump and his supporters, who were reduced to labels and caricatures: “protectionism,” “isolationist sentiments,” and the like. “Too often, we judge other groups by their worst examples

Even his somewhat less egregious offenses are inexplicable in terms of an invitation. Does anyone think Lauren Sivan put out the vibe upon meeting famous Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein that she was hoping to watch him furtively whack it into a potted plant in a dark corner of an empty restaurant kitchen? The more aggressive harassment is, the harder it is to explain in terms of a misconstrued female “invitation.” Actual assault is plainly indefensible, yet here’s Eddie
