Flying Coach Is So Cramped
It Could Be a Death Trap

Daily Beast, by Clive Irving

Original Article

As airlines pack seats tighter than ever, the tests supposed to show that passengers can get out alive in a crash are woefully out of date. The FAA won’t make the results public, and a court warns there is “a plausible life-and-death safety concern.” For years the airlines have been allowed to steadily shrink the size of coach class seats and the space between seat rows without regulators considering the impact of this on safety. A Daily Beast investigation has found: • The tests carried out to ensure that all the passengers can safely exit a cabin in an emergency are dangerously

I´m sure I´d change my mind if I were involved in a runway crash, but common sense tells you that you´re going to get killed in any crash that occurs in the air, even if they doubled or halved the number of seats. Also, it seems somehow hypocritical to bring these suits, when by packing so many of us into their planes, airlines have managed, in spite of the additional taxes and fees and zillions of regulations imposed by various municipalities and the feds, to keep travel affordable for most Americans.

In a crash you might be better off with less room. An evacuation is another matter. Several years ago I was on a flight and measured the distance from the front of my seat to the back of the seat in front. It was 7 inches. That is not enough room for an adult.

Just returned from a many-legged trip on American. On 1 of the newer planes, the bathroom was literally so small I could NOT turn around in it and I am not a big person. I had to stand facing the door and bend my body sideways to wash my hands. When I left, I asked the flight attendant if there are passengers who simply can´t use the toilet and she told me nearly ½ had trouble and maybe ¼ were "really uncomfortable."
By minimizing the bathroom size, American was able to fit in 1 more row of seats. In case of emergency, there would´ve been NO way to exit the plane in the rear because the only place to park the drink carts was by the rear door.

Hey #1, you are right, in a crash it wouldn´t so much matter. Where the real danger occurs is an on-ground emergency like a fire. There is simply no way to evacuate a plane with this limited space and maximum people efficiently and safely. Not enough room during a panic.

Laptop and phone batteries are a real threat (many articles written about this...see Samsung).

Same here, #9. We have been flying coach so we could economize and spend the savings on actual vacation time. No longer. Coach is almost impossible for me to suffer anymore. Went to France on Air France two years ago. Seven and a half hours....horrible, uncomfortable, jammed up in a too small seat. Never again. All this after the hassle of airport security. They can have it.

I´m with you #7. Anyone who bulges over into another person´s seat should have to pay that person half of the cost of his/her ticket. If someone needs a seat belt extender, he/she should be forced to purchase 2 seats.

On the other hand, being stuck between two obese people in a crash just might save your life - all that extra padding.

This is all about surviving and escaping a plane.

There´s another hazard involved in tiny seats with no leg room: Sitting jammed in like that for hours on end, how many people get a case of deep vein thrombosis/blood clot, and end up seriously ill or dead?

Many years ago, I committed an offense for which famous men are now being publicly, and rightly, shamed. I patted an office secretary on her behind. I won’t offer the usual lame defense that I didn’t know my advance was unwanted or that social attitudes were different back then. My only excuse is that at the time of the incident I was about 7 years old. I remember the moment because of what happened immediately afterward. The secretary, who worked at my father’s business in Mexico City, turned around and slammed a heavy stack of papers on my head. I marched indignantly

Three military personnel have been reassigned from their White House jobs amid allegations that they had improper contact with foreign women while traveling with President Trump on his recent trip to Asia, according to officials familiar with the situation. The service members worked for the White House Communications Agency, a specialized military unit that helps provide the president, vice president, Secret Service and other officials with secure communications. The military is scrutinizing three Army noncommissioned officers who allegedly broke curfew during Trump’s trip to Vietnam this month, officials said.

President Donald Trump´s short-lived communications director Anthony Scaramucci didn´t have much luck shopping his book with major publishers. In the months after getting ousted from the White House, Scaramucci sought a publisher to put out a book, which at one point was titled "I Did It My Way," about his 10 days as Trump´s communications director. A proposal for the book that was circulated to several major publishers earlier this summer and shared with Business Insider promised a "tell-all" to dish on his bizarre ouster from the White House as well as his "countless other interactions involving Sean Spicer,

Last Thursday, after a photograph emerged of Senator Al Franken either groping or pretending to grope a sleeping woman, Leeann Tweeden, with whom he’d been traveling on a 2006 U.S.O. tour, I wrote that he should resign. Almost as soon as it was published I started having second thoughts. I spent all weekend feeling guilty that I’d called for the sacrifice of an otherwise decent man to make a political point. Then I saw the news that a woman named Lindsay Menz accused Franken of grabbing her butt while they posed for a photo at the Minnesota State Fair in 2010,
