Junipero Serra statue beheaded, splashed
with red paint in Central California

SFGate, by Alyssa Pereira

A bronze statue of the Roman Catholic priest Junipero Serra at the Old Santa Barbara Mission was decapitated and doused with red paint on Sunday night or early Monday morning. The statue, on the western side of the Central Coast property near the mission´s office, has since been covered with a tarp. The Santa Barbara mission has been called the "Queen of the Missions." The statue was vandalized in a similar fashion as another Father Serra statue in Monterey last year. (Snip) Serra was a Franciscan friar in the 18th century who founded nine of the state´s 21 missions. He was canonized

Comments:
The so-called Native Americans don´t like him, so the statues must go.

First they came for the Confederate statues and I said nothing, for I was not a Southerner. Next they came for the Catholic statues... and absolutely the Founding Fathers and anyone other than a non-white person is on the chopping block.

If the statue of Fr. Serra must be destroyed, then what of the Missions that he built?
Should they be destroyed, too?

Where does it stop? And who gets to choose what gets destroyed?

Well, Junipero Serra did basically enslave the Native Americans. But they also came to him, he didn´t round them up. They were starving to death and they came to his mission for food. He taught them to farm and put them to work and wouldn´t let them leave.

So, there are some old hard feelings. I´m willing to bet, however, that it wasn´t descendants of those old Indian nations that pulled this stunt. It was some woke white kids with too much time on their hands and zero sense whatsoever.

Serra didn´t ´enslave´ the Indians - he saved their lives by teaching them useful trades. He went to the trouble of learning their languages and always sided with them against the Spaniareds. He knew what the Spaniard soldiers were capable of, he´s seen it before - they slaughtered anyone deemed useless and the Indians were prime candidates unless the Spaniards could see that they could do useful things. So in teaching the Indians, he kept the Spaniards from massacring them. He was a tough old Catalonian who was harder on himself than he ever was on the Indians.

Mindless vandals in the mideast are busily blowing up everything they can, from historic sites to anything religious (except for their own nutty notions.)

But we have our own mindless vandals. With "friends" like the current crop of progressive thugs trashing everything here, who needs more enemies.

#6, even more fun; most of the Mission Indians in CA have Hispanic names and most assuredly, Hispanic ancestors, too.

The California Indians discovered before everyone else that you don´t have to work very hard to eke out a living there. So to Europeans, it looked like that the Indians did nothing and had nothing, but they were happy with what they had. (An 1850s US Army officer described California as "the Land of the Lotus-Eaters".)

And if you go back and read how the Spanish set up those missions, yeah, it was pretty much slavery - but it was for their own good! Even if they did die like flies.

Some padres protested but they had been doing that since Cortez took over Mexico.

The psychologist who helped pull off the biggest Social Security fraud in U.S. history was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison. Alfred Bradley Adkins was part of the fraud ring orchestrated by Eric C. Conn, one of the country’s most prominent disability lawyers, and David B. Daugherty, a Social Security judge who rubber-stamped at least 1,700 bogus applications for benefits. All told, the scam would have cost the government at least $600 million in fraudulent lifetime benefits, according to the government’s conservative estimate. Some $93 million were already paid out before the scam was stopped, the government said.

It was not enough to get a search warrant to ransack the Virginia home of Paul Manafort, even as the former Trump campaign chairman was cooperating with congressional investigators. Mueller’s bad-asses persuaded a judge to give them permission to pick the door lock. That way, they could break into the premises in the wee hours, while Manafort and his wife were in bed sleeping.
