U.S. top court hands win to
Republicans over Texas voting maps

Reuters, by Lawrence Hurley

Original Article

Washington - An ideologically divided U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday handed a win to Republicans in Texas by putting on hold rulings that said electoral districts drawn by state lawmakers discriminated against minority voters. On a 5-4 vote, with the court’s conservatives in the majority and the liberal justices dissenting, the court in a brief order blocked two different lower court decisions that found fault with both congressional districts and state legislative districts drawn by the Republican-controlled state legislature. In August, a federal court in Texas struck down two Republican-drawn congressional districts saying

Comments:
Texas continues to set the pace for making America Great Again, in spite of local legislative dRATS subterfuge in collusion with activist federal judges.

If done properly, there should be not "republican drawn" or "demonrat drawn" voting districts.

Simply make sure all the districts have almost the same people and let that be that.

It is essential that those who are in each district vote their conscience. Those who live in the more rural districts tend to vote conservatively and those in urban districts tend to vote liberal.

Some areas are very sparsely populated and have unusual "shapes" but that is not jerrymandering. This is not a racial issue,, but the media makes it look like it.

If they didn´y gerrymander some districts, we wouldn´t have Sheila-Jackson Lee, Hank Johnson, Mad Maxine, Cummings, etc., etc. etc.!

A simple geometric rule will sort this out into some semblance of sanity.

Make a requirement that the perimeter of the district in miles has to be no more than 8 times the area of the district in square miles.

A perfectly square district has a ratio of 4. One which is rectangular, twice as long as wide, will have a ratio of 6. One that rectangular and is 3 times as long as it is wide, will have a ratio of 8. Any joggling pushes the ratio up, so to cut around an area or reach out and grab an area, requires the rest of the area to be more like a square.

This simple rule would get sensibly laid out districts...and it would be even better, since a weird tentacle sticking out of one would also increase the adjacent district, tending to make districts be geometrically simple, not these insane Rorschach test districts that they now have to guarantee that incumbents are elected forever.

I like #4´s suggestion, except in the instances where the boundary of an electoral district follows a county boundary line that happens to be a river or line of mountains.

Maryland Republicans are involved with a similar suit. Okay, let´s just draw simple straight line boxes with equal numbers of constituents...in Maryland that could easily mean the loss of the one seat they´re allowed to hold. The squish governor wants to create a non-partisan/bi-partisan commission...in a state where Dem registration is better than 2:1. Fools, trying to take politics out of politics. BTW: These is no Constitutional requirement to have districts. All could be elected "at large".

Orrick also said that Trump cannot set fresh conditions on spending that Congress has previously approved.
