Crews working for a private contractor began power-washing sidewalks with a chlorine solution in downtown San Diego on Monday, part of an effort to stop the spread of hepatitis A among homeless people. The crews cleaned sidewalks around 17th and Imperial avenues, where hundreds of homeless congregate and live in tents and other shelters. (Snip) The hepatitis A outbreak has left 15 homeless people dead and hospitalized nearly 300 others. A lack of adequate access to restrooms, showers and hand-washing stations is believed to have contributed to the spread. The county has provided hepatitis vaccinations to 19,000 people, including 7,300
Comments: Our so-called leaders are having great success in transforming the USA into a third-world nation. Does it occur to them to wonder who will fund their posh lifestyles once we´re all poor?
Over the past five years, I have sold all but one of my assets in California. With the continued fall of California into the abyss, I have been considering selling my last asset in downtown San Diego. Both LA and San Diego are full of record numbers of the homeless and those politicians willing to attract many more intruding on real citizens who pay the bills. Do we need to subject ourselves to disease as well?
Look at the photo. Washing down the sidewalk with bleach while the shopping carts full of filthy clothing and other personal effects probably infected with who-knows-what go untouched. Waiting, also, for the first homeless person to refuse a vaccination - they have constitutional rights, too, ya know.
Institutionalization for those who are incapable of caring for themselves. They don´t like being told what to do, but then again, neither do children. Children however, are often overruled for their own good. True wisdom knows the proper time, and true courage does what is necessary. Everything else is a lie.
Des Moines, Iowa — As he tows a 96-square-foot house around Des Moines, Joe Stevens is overwhelmed by the intense, sometimes tearful support he receives from churches, schools and service groups for his plan to use the trendy little structures to help homeless people. But when Stevens actually tried to create a village of the homes in Iowa’s largest city, the response was far different. (Snip) In at least a dozen cases across the nation, neighbors organized to stop tiny house projects, including in Charlotte, North Carolina; Nashville, Tennessee; San Jose, California; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Tallahassee, Florida; and Bend, Oregon.
Target Corp.’s holiday-quarter profit forecast missed analyst expectations, sending its shares down 10 percent on Wednesday as hopes faded that the retailer would make a shopping season comeback. Target has missed Wall Street’s fourth-quarter profit expectations for the past two years. It is gearing up for the holidays by cutting prices and introducing delivery options to compete with Wal-Mart and online sellers, moves that can lure customers but crimp margins. (Snip) “This is still a very competitive environment, and Target has no choice but to respond to that.. the problem is that Wall Street don’t necessarily understand
An illegal immigrant was charged this week in the death of a New York socialite who was found bludgeoned to death in her hilltop estate two years ago, the end result of an elaborate international manhunt. Esdras Marroquin Gomez, 32, pleaded not guilty Monday at his arraignment on a murder charge in the death of 83-year-old Lois Colley, according to the Westchester County district attorney´s office, who said he was indicted by a grand jury last year. "The murder scene was horrendous," Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino said. "From our evaluation, we believe the murder weapon was a home fire
A special Haitian Senate commission is accusing more than a dozen former government officials and heads of private firms of embezzling $2 billion in Venezuelan oil loans — money that could have helped the country rebuild after its devastating earthquake in 2010. An anti-corruption investigation concluded that charges should be filed against two former prime ministers, several ex-ministers and the owners of private firms on grounds they misappropriated and embezzled money that left post-quake Haiti with unfinished government buildings, poorly constructed housing and overpriced public works contracts. (Snip) “It can be declared that the PETROCARIBE has been the object of embezzlement,
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Monday called on Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore to step aside, hours after a new accuser came forward alleging Moore sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager. “If he continues this will not end well for Mr. Moore,” Graham tweeted. (Snip) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), on Monday called for Moore to “step aside,” and was followed by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and others. Some have suggested rallying a write-in campaign around Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.), who lost to Moore in a primary runoff in September.
More than six in ten babies born in London hospitals have foreign mothers who are either immigrants or visiting from abroad, official figures show. The evidence of the impact of immigration on the NHS was revealed in a breakdown of hospital records for last year published by the Office for National Statistics. (Snip) In one London hospital nearly four out of five births were to mothers born abroad, and in two others the figure was over 70 per cent. Across the country just over 28 per cent of babies in 2016 were born to foreign-born mothers, up from just over 11 per
A music video director on Sunday morning (Nov. 12) temporarily placed a twice-life size statue of an African-American woman on the slab where the statue of Jefferson Davis once stood. The controversial monument to the President of the Confederacy was removed on May 11. New Orleans filmmaker Zac Manuel explained that the installation will set the scene for a video accompanying a new song titled "If All I Was Was Black" by renowned folk singer and civil rights activist, Mavis Staples, who was not present Sunday. (Snip) A young couple, who said they lived nearby, were disappointed to learn the statue
Monday on CNBC, former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) said due to the sexual misconduct accusations leveled against former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, he should step aside in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Bush said, “This is not a question of innocence or guilt like in a criminal proceeding, this is a question of what’s right and what’s wrong. Acknowledging that you’re dating teenagers when you’re 32-years old as assistant state attorney is wrong. It’s just plain wrong.” He added, “We need to stand for basic principles, and decency has to be one of those.
Republican Sen. Jeff Flake says he would rather see a Democrat win Alabama’s open Senate seat than accused teen groper Roy Moore — and compared the GOP candidate to former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. “If the choice is between Roy Moore and a Democrat, if I were in Alabama I’d vote for the Democrat,” the Arizona senator?, who recently announced he would not seek reelection,? said Monday. “There was a time when Republican senators would go and campaign for a Democrat rather than seat a Republican who would be so repugnant to the party and would diminish the party’s chances
Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden told an NBC audience Monday that he wouldn’t worry much about a potential 2020 matchup against President Trump because he’s “Middle-class Joe.” A hypothetical election showdown between Mr. Biden, 77, and Mr. Trump was laid before a “Megyn Kelly Today” audience to start the week when the former vice president said blue-collar voters “love” him more than the president. He said that while he is still unsure about future plans, his connection with middle-class voters is not in doubt. (Snip) “I understand the Rust Belt. Donald Trump has no notion what those people are
The plague death toll shows no sign of slowing as official figures reveal 165 have now lost their lives in Madagascar´s ´worst outbreak in 50 years´. Data shows a 15 per cent jump in fatalities over three days, with scientists concerned it has reached ´crisis´ point and 10 countries now placed on high alert. (Snip) Two thirds of cases have been caused by the airborne pneumonic plague, which can be spread through coughing, sneezing or spitting and kill within 24 hours. It is strikingly different to the bubonic form, responsible for the ´Black Death´ in the 14th century, which strikes the country
Former Massachusetts governor and failed president candidate Mitt Romney took opportunity to weigh in on the whole Roy Moore matter — the one that finds him ensnarled in a web of allegations of sexual improprieties with underage and young girls — and call for the former Alabama judge to immediately “step aside” and abandon his Senate aspirations. No need to wait on proof. To Romney, the allegations are bad enough. “Innocent until proven guilty is for criminal convictions, not elections,” he said, The Hill reported. (Snip) Indeed, Several other Republicans have come forward to say or suggest the same as
In the past few weeks, I´ve been a woman of split personalities. On a good day, I´m elated — empowered and inspired by the many women who have courageously opened the floodgates to help end the shroud of silence and shame that surrounds victims of sexual assault and harassment. I shared my stories. I brought other women together to share theirs. We were giddy at the catharsis. It felt like a sea change. On a bad day, I´m despondent — devastated and angry that so many of the people who were rightly outraged over Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey were utterly disbelieving
Known for his insightful take on politics, journalist and author Thomas Wictor believes Judge Roy Moore’s signature in Gloria Allred accuser Beverly Young Nelson’s yearbook is a forgery. (Photo) The sevens in 1977 to the right of “Christmas,” are very different from the sevens in the date (12-22-77) above “Old Hickory House.” “Look at the two versions of the number “7,” tweeted Wictor. “”12-22-77” and “Olde Hickory House” were written by a different person,” he added. Next, Wictor points out “the “R” and “y” in “Roy,”” are not written the same way. The inflection of the “Y” is more pronounced
Former model Leann Tweeden accused Minnesota Sen. Al Franken Thursday of harassing her multiple times during a USO entertainment tour in the Middle East in 2006. Tweeden alleges that Franken, a writer for Saturday Night Live before he became a Senator, wrote a script that featured him kissing her, and harassed her during rehearsals, Tweeden writes for KABC. When Tweeden returned from the tour, she noticed a photo from the tour where Franken has his hands on her breasts and is smiling into the camera. “You knew exactly what you were doing. You forcibly kissed me without my consent, grabbed my
Jeff Sessions is a man in search of a banana peel. When he can’t find one to step on, he supplies his own. Sessions is not a bad man, but he is a bad attorney general, as he demonstrated again Tuesday. By writing to Republicans in Congress just hours before he was scheduled to testify that he was open to appointing a special prosecutor to examine former FBI Director James Comey’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s e-mail case and the notorious Uranium One deal, Sessions primed the pump for a really big show. Democrats arrived furious and Republicans gleefully expected an ah-ha moment. Both
Appointing a special counsel to probe her Uranium One deal would be “such an abuse of power” by the Trump administration, Hillary Clinton said Wednesday. The former Democratic presidential candidate said Trump risked dangerously politicizing the Justice Department, “like some authoritarian regime.” Clinton made the remarks in an interview with Mother Jones about reports this week that Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked two top prosecutors to look into the sale of a uranium company to Russian interests during Clinton’s time as secretary of state. President Trump and other Republicans allege ties between donations to the Clinton Foundation and the company sale, even though
When the Washington Post filed its story against Roy Moore last week, we took a cautious line, agreeing with Republican lawmakers who said “if true,” these charges disqualify the GOP´s nominee in Alabama’s special election for the Senate. We pressed Republicans to extract more information from Moore. Since then, plenty more information has emerged. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, after getting Moore’s side of the story last week, withdrew his endorsement of the former judge. A former boyfriend of the chief Washington Post subject, who says Moore fondled her as a 14-year-old after flirting with her outside a custody hearing, corroborated the story. A
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Tuesday that the entire U.S. House will now face mandatory training to avoid sexual harassment and discrimination, moving to address the growing national scandal over behavior ranging from the boorish to the criminal. His comments came hours after a House committee held a hearing on harassment. Mr. Ryan said the House will now have a policy of mandatory training for every lawmaker and every staffer. “Our goal is not only to raise awareness, but also make abundantly clear that harassment in any form has no place in this institution,” he said.
Environment: This week, thousands of scientists issued a bleak and terrifying "second notice" to mankind about how we will destroy the planet unless we take "urgent" action. If this warning is as reliable as the first notice these scientists issued in 1992, we have nothing to worry about. In an article published in the journal Bioscience, 15,364 scientists warned that we are "jeopardizing our future" and that "immediate action" is needed to "safeguard our imperiled biosphere." "Soon it will be too late to shift course away from our failing trajectory, and time is running out," the scientists say. The article
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told attendees at a Wall Street Journal event on Tuesday that if Judge Roy Moore wins the Alabama Senate race in December, he will face a Senate ethics committee investigation. McConnell argued, “I think it’s safe to say that if he were to be sworn in, he would immediately be in a process before the Senate Ethics Committee. He would be sworn in and be asked to testify under oath as well, and it would be a rather unusual beginning.” The Washington Post released an article last week that alleged that Moore engaged in sexual
It was a rather cagey move via Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The longtime anti-Trumper was barely able to conceal his smirk as he informed the media that should Roy Moore win next month’s Alabama special election to fill the vacant Senate seat created when Jeff Sessions became the U.S. Attorney General, it would be up to President Trump to make the final decision regarding whether or not Moore would be allowed to actually serve in the Senate. (Snip) Democrats in Congress are said to already be preparing a full-on “If Roy Moore isn’t fit to be a senator then Donald
Papa John´s apologized Tuesday night for comments made by CEO John Schnatter blaming sluggish pizza sales on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. The company is a major NFL sponsor and advertiser, and Schnatter said on an earnings call Nov. 1 that "NFL leadership has hurt Papa John´s shareholders" and that the protests "should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago."(Snip) "The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive," it said. "That definitely was not our
The allegations by five women that Roy Moore pursued and sexually molested teenage girls while he was in his 30s are disgusting, and disqualify him to serve in the United States Senate. Conservatives should be outraged at Moore for his loathsome conduct. But they should also be outraged at the man who helped put Moore on the ballot and is in the process of destroying the Trump presidency: Stephen K. Bannon. If the man Trump supported in the primary, Sen. Luther Strange, were the Republican nominee today, the GOP would be cruising to an easy victory in the Dec. 12 special
