Black Death Resurfaces in Multiple
Northern Arizona Counties…

The plague, also known as “the Black Death” killed somewhere between 75 and 200 million people as a result of international trade, commerce and transnational shipping. The disease was thought to be spread by fleas and parasites carried by rats. The global population took over 400 years to recover.ARIZONA – Officials in two Arizona counties are warning the public after fleas in the region tested positive for the plague, the infamous infectious disease that killed millions during the Middle Ages. Navajo County Public Health officials confirmed on Friday that fleas in the area have tested positive for the rare disease. The

Nothing new. Plague has been in the rodent populations in North America for a long time, maybe forever. It is regularly found in prairie dogs, and their fleas. Prairie dog hunters have known for many, many decades to never fool with a prairie dog you have shot, leave them for the hawks and coyotes.

When I was Armenia, I worked with a government group which sampled rodents and their fleas in the wild to make maps of plague distribution across their country.

Plague has been in rodent populations, scattered all across the world for a very long time.
Humans, as a species, have adapted to be relatively resistant to plague, but not all individuals, or all ethnic groups, are equally resistant. But fewer people die now, the great plagues largely sorted out those who couldn´t recover. Natural selection a huge scale at it´s ugliest.

Plague outbreaks in history are believed to have had their origins in the Middle East, actually the Gobi Desert region, spreading easily along trade routes, by caravans and the like.

Rats have traveled all over the world with humans.

If more plague is being identified in the Arizona area, then there´s probably more there.

And if something disturbs the host rodent from its natural habitat driving it into areas of denser human populations, you can have the ingredients for a plague epidemic. I doubt it would get to the pandemic stage, with all the anitbiotics available.

Of course, the plague bacillus has mutated somewhat. Who knows what form it really would take.

Fifty years ago part of the laundry list of immunizations given to troops headed to Vietnam was a plague vaccine injection.

One an episode of TV´s "Monsters Inside Me" was about a husband and wife from NM who took a trip to NYC and took sick. They were diagnosed with plague with which they had been infected before they left home. The wife got quite sick, but recovered. The husband nearly died and has lingering effects.

Apparently if the disease is properly diagnosed at an early stage it is easily treatable. Problem is so few cases annually and with symptoms resembling other more common maladies that doctors can be slow to hit on it´s being plague.

#3 is absolutely correct. New Mexico has a flare up every once in a while. People who handle wild animals, like bob cats, rabbits, skunks, and coyotes are very prone to acquiring a bad case of bubonic plague. When I worked in vector control in new Mexico we were getting a report of an isolated case of Yersinia pestis infection (BP). It is pretty much a harmless infectious diseae these days. It is not viral, but it is bacterial. It is transmitted to humans via a ´vector"- that is a flea that actually injects the bacteria into the human from the host animal. this happens when the human handles the carcass of the host animal. Feas immediately sense the host is dead through a drop in blood pressure. The start searching for a new host. This bounty trappers contract the disease when they take the trapped animals pelt for proof of killing it in order to collect the bounty. When I was working in New Mexico, Bob cat pelts drew $200.00. They were collected, dried and saved for when the BLM agent came to town- about once every two months and he would pay the bounty in cash! It´s a lucrative business- no taxes!
