Charlie Gard parents end legal fight
as time runs out for ´beautiful´ baby

The parents of terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard have ended their legal challenge to take him to the US for experimental treatment. A lawyer representing Chris Gard and Connie Yates told the High Court that "time had run out" for the baby. It means Charlie will not reach his first birthday on 4 August, his father said afterwards on the court steps. "To let our beautiful little Charlie go", is "the hardest thing we´ll ever have to do," his mother said. They made the decision because a US doctor said it was now too late to give Charlie nucleoside therapy. "We only

Comments:
I’m sure the hospital will claim this as vindication, but I have to wonder if the outcome would have been different if they had let Charlie’s parents bring him to the U.S. for treatment. Now we’ll never know.

Treatment (and justice) delayed, is treatment (and justice) denied.

Among other problems: the courts are too damn slow.

If a critical moment passed and Charlie was allowed to deteriorate for too long, while the hospital and the court wasted time ... well, may the full fury of the public come down on the UK´s arrogant medical establishment.

And may Charlie Gard´s brief life not be forgotten as we continue the fight against socialized medicine and its inevitable death panels, here in the US.

(Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Wednesday on a sweeping proposal to speed the deployment of self-driving cars without human controls and bar states from blocking autonomous vehicles, congressional aides said. The bill, which was passed unanimously by a House panel in July, would allow automakers to obtain exemptions to deploy up to 25,000 vehicles without meeting existing auto safety standards in the first year, a cap that would rise to 100,000 vehicles annually over three years. Automakers and technology companies including General Motors Co and Alphabet Inc’s’ self-driving unit Waymo have been pushing for new federal

Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper have entertained the idea of forming a unity presidential ticket to run for the White House in 2020, a source involved the discussions tells CNN. Under this scenario, Kasich, a Republican, and Hickenlooper, a Democrat, would run as independents with Kasich at the top of the ticket, said the source, who cautioned it has only been casually talked about. "The idea of a joint ticket has been discussed, but not at an organizational or planning level," said the source, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. "What they are trying

Anti-Donald Trump protests turned into skirmishes with police in Phoenix on Tuesday, as cops unloaded on the crowds gathered outside his rally with tear gas. In one wince-inducing moment screened on CBS5 and captured on Twitter, one protester - clad in a gas mask - kicked a canister of tear gas back at police. Seconds later a cloud of dust mushroomed up from his groin and he doubled up in agony. ´A guy just got shot with a rubber bullet,´ remarked one host, as the other lapsed into a pained silence. HAMPTON, Iowa — It was quitting time. Edith Rivera took one last lunch order, dropped off a basket of tortilla chips and set off from work, heading out to the farm roads where other immigrants feared to drive. Like them, Ms. Rivera, 33, had no legal status in the country where she had lived for 18 years. She had no driver’s license, apart from the long-expired North Carolina identification she held safe, like a talisman, in her wallet. But as she skimmed past the northern Iowa cornfields on her way to her son Steven’s seventh-grade track meet, she did not

Thanks to a little-noticed auction sale, a South Bay couple are the proud owners of one of the most exclusive streets in San Francisco — and they’re looking for ways to make their purchase pay. Tina Lam and Michael Cheng snatched up Presidio Terrace — the block-long, private oval street lined by 35 megamillion-dollar mansions — for $90,000 and change in a city-run auction stemming from an unpaid tax bill. They outlasted several other bidders. Now they’re looking to cash in — maybe by charging the residents of those mansions to park on their own private street.

On June 28th, President Trump convened a roundtable at the White House that included victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. The event was part of the Administration’s push to pass several new immigration bills designed to, in Trump’s words, “close the dangerous loopholes exploited by criminals, gang members, drug dealers, killers, terrorists.” A regular theme of the Trump Administration’s messaging on immigration has been to present undocumented “bad hombres” as an immediate threat to the safety and cohesion of the American family unit. But some of Trump’s immigration policies, in themselves, have endangered families across America. The stories below,

It sets up a 2017-18 term that will have a full complement of nine justices and a group of ideologically charged cases in which Kennedy is a good bet to cast the pivotal vote. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has been in recent headlines with a recent launch of a spy satellite. In fact, SpaceX is better at well managed and scripted messaging than it is at actually launching cargo into space in a timely and successful fashion. Always the public relations maestro, Musk announced that he plans to reuse every major component of the rocket by 2018. One of the themes SpaceX has carefully crafted is that it represents the future of “free-market” space flight. The problem with this public relations hype is that it bears little resemblance to reality. Whether it is SpaceX or Musk’s

Hillary Clinton’s “What Happened” reads like a therapy session in which the losing presidential candidate works through the five stages of grief in real time. There’s plenty of anger, oodles of denial, bouts of depression, some desperate bargaining and finally a modicum of acceptance. But not before she’s thrown everyone from President Obama to Bernie Sanders under the bus for her loss to Donald Trump. Among her many laments? “I don’t think the press did their job,” as she tells Vox’s Ezra Klein. Expanding on that, she told him the press obsessed over Trump because she was talking policy while he was “good

After months of denials, the pretext for Susan Rice’s eavesdropping on Trump officials has finally been made public. It had been widely known that Obama’s former National Security Adviser had contrived to unmask the names of top Trump officials who had been spied on by the administration.
