U.S. airstrikes in Afghanistan are at
levels not seen since Obama troop surge

Washington Post, by Thomas Gibbons-Neff

The U.S. air war in Afghanistan has returned to a level of intensity not seen since American forces were still fanned out across the country and fighting Taliban militants in daily skirmishes in 2012, according to recently released military data. As of June 30, U.S. and coalition aircraft had dropped or expended 1,634 munitions in Afghanistan so far this year, according to U.S. Air Force numbers. By comparison, in 2015 and 2016, that figure was 298 and 545 respectively. The majority of this year’s strikes have been used to go after the Taliban, said Navy Capt. Bill Salvin, a spokesman for the U.S.-led mission in Afghanistan.

This is what happens when you let a "Mad Dog" marine loose to do his job. There is no better a military leader that puts his troops first while going to accomplish their mission. Another feel good story from a source that wanted to imply US airstrike might lead to "collateral damage". Was 0bama´s feet ever put to the fire for his civilian losses in the Middle East? Rhetorical question.

Let´s ask the Mad Dog how this leads to victory, i.e. a pacified and politically united Afghanistan willing and able to defend itself...or is the US re-committing itself to a policy of perpetual active military presence and airstrikes to keep the Talibani from getting to Kabul while we "train" the Afghans to take on the struggle?

Ultimately this "feel good" stuff will prove expensive insanity as the most likely outcome is multiple military double-downs than any lasting success. After nearly two decades of involvement, payoffs and fighting, the United States is no closer to a stable Afghanistan than when American bombs first dropped on Tora Bora.

Abdullahi Yusuf, a 21-year-old from Minnesota´s Somali community, was sentenced last November by federal judge Michael Davis after he was arrested for plotting to join the terrorist organization. Yusuf then allegedly violated the terms of his 20-year supervised release by watching a documentary on ISIS fighters while at a halfway house. The Russian lawyer who met with President Trump´s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. in New York last year said Tuesday that she is ready to testify before Congress about the meeting. "I´m ready to clarify the situation behind this mass hysteria – but only through lawyers or testifying in the Senate," Natalia Veselnitskaya said in an interview with Russia´s Kremlin-backed RT TV channel. Donald Trump Jr. met with Veselnitskaya in June 2016 after he was informed that she might have incriminating information about the Hillary Clinton, who was his father´s Democratic rival for the presidency at the time. President Trump said election integrity is an American issue, not a Republican or Democratic issue, during a brief appearance Wednesday at the first public meeting of his Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. The meeting comes as the commission and its vice chair Kris W. Kobach have come under fire from Democrats and civil liberty groups who alleged the commission was created to suppress voters, lacked transparency and violated federal law. Several groups filed lawsuits against the commission earlier this month after Mr. Kobach asked states to turn over voter information including names, partial Social Security

Snail slime. On your face. All for the sake of beauty. And, hopefully, a handsome profit for U.S. retailers looking to push it along with other K-beauty trends into the mainstream -- if people can get over the "ick" factor. Korean consumers are on a constant hunt for innovative products and unusual natural ingredients. Now, the decade-old craze is making its way to everyday consumers in the U.S., as K-beauty products jump from niche websites and slide onto the shelves at Target Corp., CVS Health Corp. and Ulta Beauty Inc. stores. The retailers earlier this year announced expansions of the merchandise.

In good, bad and ugly ways, this week has been a revealing metaphor for Donald Trump’s presidency. (Snip) There is no denying that America elected an exceptional president in Trump, a consummate outsider and the first president ever to have no government or military experience. But as it wraps up its first six months, Trump’s presidency looks more conventional than exceptional. Separating the substance from the noise shows him in a position familiar to all new presidents: struggling to turn his campaign promises into reality while juggling foreign-policy challenges and mastering the learning curve of the world’s

German car brand Audi is facing a fierce backlash on social media over an advert aired in China which is being accused of objectifying women in a sexist manner. The advert compares finding a car to finding the perfect wife. It shows a couple at the altar seemingly about to tie the knot before an apparently concerned future mother-in-law interrupts proceedings to inspect the bride’s body. The older woman is shown pinching the younger woman’s nose and ears and scrutinising her teeth while an exasperated groom and priest look on. She then takes a last look at the bride’s chest before a caption declares: “an important

There´s a lot of pork in Washington -- not the kind you eat, the kind that flows out of taxpayers´ pockets into lawmakers´ pet projects. I´m talking about pork-barrel spending. Pork-barrel projects, or "earmarks," are funds lawmakers set aside for their pet projects. Lawmakers will often throw them into spending bills to get their colleagues to vote "yes" and the programs they fund are often created without any hearings in Congress and without being requested by the president or another agency. (Snip) Earmarks have only continued to grow in recent years, even after the House voted in 2011 to place a moratorium on them.
