Mark Leibovitch, chief national correspondent for the NYT Magazine recorded his impressions of Washington DC, the town that melted down. He paints a portrait of Sean Spicer trying to survive "in the shadow of a capricious force". He sketches John McCain, in a permanent funk "traveling the globe to the point of weariness, seemingly on a personal mission to reassure allies unnerved by Trump." He describes the institutional Republicans walking around looking "as if they were bracing for a chandelier to drop on their heads". Most compelling of all are cameos of the bit players: the staff members, lobbyists, newspeople,

Zuckerberg has once again proven that even a pea-brained geek can become a billionaire but that will not bring climate change any closer to reality.

Yes, "institutional Republicans" have every reason to worry. Their collective efforts to preserve the crime known as Obamacare is going to force every one of them to seek gainful employment elsewhere, at least the ones who are not too old and senile to do actual work. However, if their ultimate hope is to see Obamacare crash and burn completely before the GOP plan is implemented then I will make my apology.

FTA: Unfortunately there is no a priori way to distinguish between "creative destruction" and long-term decline. They look too much alike at the start. For all too many "disruptive innovation" will be indistinguishable, in the short run at least, from unemployment. (Snip) The GOP side is behaving like survivors shouting out a headcount after a collision to see who´s left alive. Among the Dems only Sanders is faintly stirring under the wreckage but ever more faintly.

It appears that Bernie´s wife is in legal trouble, which does him no good for a 2020 run when he´ll be approaching eighty. The Democrats have, as a party, gone over to the dark side--they are de facto socialists now--while the ideologically timid Republicans don´t want to appear too different from the opposition. President Trump is there to shake things up, to change what has long been regarded as settled. That´s a tough job, but somebody had to do it.

I became interested in Leibovich when I read The Town, an excellent exposé on the place we love to hate. However later material from him revealed that he was as hardcore a Democrat as any of the other media types.

A Florida man has been charged with manslaughter after leaving his 8-month-old son to die in 109-degree heat in his trailer. William Hendrickson´s baby passed away at the scene on Thursday after Largo police officers and paramedics could not revive him, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The little boy´s 2-year-old sister suffered severe dehydration as well and was hospitalized. Investigators found the temperature in Hendrickson´s bedroom in the Largo mobile home to be 109 degrees. Hendrickson, 25, had been cautioned by local social services not to leave the kids in the steaming bedroom, according to the newspaper. "The Largo Police would like

WASHINGTON -- The senator who was defeated by President Obama in his 2008 quest for the White House stepped in to cast the deciding vote to kill Senate Republicans´ last-gasp effort to repeal Obama´s signature healthcare legislation before the summer recess. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) were expected to vote against the "skinny repeal" -- a bare-bones repeal of only the individual and employer mandates as well as the medical device tax; the latter has drawn bipartisan criticism over the years. Vice President Mike Pence was at the Capitol, ready to cast a tie-breaking vote as he had to

When U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI, and Customs and Border Protection teamed up to arrest Imran Awan, an IT staffer for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and other congressional Democrats, Americans began to realize just how broken and corrupt the Democratic Party has become. Indeed, such scandals beg the question of whether the Trump-Russia hype has not been a desperate attempt to distract the country from a long train of scandals on the Left. Awan was arrested Monday night on charges of bank fraud, to which he has pled not guilty. As Forbes´ Frank Miniter argued, however, his strange case "has

That’s how (minus the question mark) Steven Petrow, a gay Washington Post columnist, characterizes President Trump’s decision to reinstate the ban on transgender people in the military. This characterization tells us plenty about what’s wrong with leftist identity-politics. The question of whether transgender people should serve in the military is first and foremost a decision about how best to defend America militarily. The purpose of our armed forces is not to promote or reject the LGBT agenda. Its purpose is not to serve as a model for tolerance of transgender and other LGBT people, or to afford them employment opportunities, or

ISIS may be under pressure in Syria and Iraq, but that may mean greater threats outside the immediate combat zone, which has fueled worries by Western officials. As a result, the United States has compiled a list that it´s circulating to other countries of 19,000 ISIS foreign fighters presumed to be on the loose. Meanwhile, Interpol also has a list of 173 potential ISIS suicide bombers that may be targeting Europe. Last week, the head of U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Gen. Village elders in Pakistan ordered a 17-year-old girl to be raped as retribution after her brother was accused of raping another 12-year-old girl, media reported Thursday. The 12-year-old told her mother she was raped while cutting the grass, and her mother then reported the crime to the village elders, reports CNN. The elders determined that a fitting punishment would be to rape the eldest sister of the male perpetrator of the crime. “Her mothers and sisters all protested this but the elders brought out their guns and threatened to kill them,” the police report said. Three-in-four white Democrats and left-leaning Americans find it “frustrating” and “stressful” to talk politics with people who have a different opinion of President Trump, according to a Pew Research poll released Thursday. While more than half of Americans find it stressful talking to people they disagree with on Trump, white Democrats were the most likely to find it uncomfortable -- much more than Republicans of any race. The findings are from a June 27-July 9 survey, which polled a representative sample of more than 2,500 Americans on political behaviors following Trump’s election. On Wednesday night, I received a phone call from Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House communications director. He wasn’t happy. Earlier in the night, I’d tweeted, citing a “senior White House official,” that Scaramucci was having dinner at the White House with President Trump, the First Lady, Sean Hannity, and the former Fox News executive Bill Shine. It was an interesting group, and raised some questions. Was Trump getting strategic advice from Hannity? Was he considering hiring Shine? But Scaramucci had his own question—for me. “Who leaked that to you?” he asked. I said I couldn’t give him that information.

President Donald Trump has been attacking his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, daily. There have been brutal attacks on Twitter, in media interviews, and during speeches. Conventional wisdom is that Trump is getting ready to fire Sessions or hoping Sessions resigns. Conventional wisdom also assured everyone that Hillary Clinton would win in a landslide, the only question being by how large a margin. Trump´s complaint is that his attorney general should not have recused himself from the Russia hacking hoax and that he is dragging his feet on long overdue investigations and prosecutions: Deep State leaks; unmasking; DNC and Clinton collusion
