Mark Leibovitch, chief national correspondent for the NYT Magazine recorded his impressions of Washington DC, the town that melted down. He paints a portrait of Sean Spicer trying to survive "in the shadow of a capricious force". He sketches John McCain, in a permanent funk "traveling the globe to the point of weariness, seemingly on a personal mission to reassure allies unnerved by Trump." He describes the institutional Republicans walking around looking "as if they were bracing for a chandelier to drop on their heads". Most compelling of all are cameos of the bit players: the staff members, lobbyists, newspeople,

Zuckerberg has once again proven that even a pea-brained geek can become a billionaire but that will not bring climate change any closer to reality.

Yes, "institutional Republicans" have every reason to worry. Their collective efforts to preserve the crime known as Obamacare is going to force every one of them to seek gainful employment elsewhere, at least the ones who are not too old and senile to do actual work. However, if their ultimate hope is to see Obamacare crash and burn completely before the GOP plan is implemented then I will make my apology.

FTA: Unfortunately there is no a priori way to distinguish between "creative destruction" and long-term decline. They look too much alike at the start. For all too many "disruptive innovation" will be indistinguishable, in the short run at least, from unemployment. (Snip) The GOP side is behaving like survivors shouting out a headcount after a collision to see who´s left alive. Among the Dems only Sanders is faintly stirring under the wreckage but ever more faintly.

It appears that Bernie´s wife is in legal trouble, which does him no good for a 2020 run when he´ll be approaching eighty. The Democrats have, as a party, gone over to the dark side--they are de facto socialists now--while the ideologically timid Republicans don´t want to appear too different from the opposition. President Trump is there to shake things up, to change what has long been regarded as settled. That´s a tough job, but somebody had to do it.

I became interested in Leibovich when I read The Town, an excellent exposé on the place we love to hate. However later material from him revealed that he was as hardcore a Democrat as any of the other media types.

Why Trump Is So Much Fun

I’ll probably never be able to make up my mind fully about President Trump, and I am sure a number of our commenters will pounce on this opening. But just about every time I think he’s blundered or shown himself not up to the job, something changes my mind as the dust settles. First, as Scott and Paul noted, his speech to the UN this week was terrific. Geez—you’d think from the reaction Trump called the Soviet Union an evil empire or something. Even more satisfying is how Trump continually confounds the efforts of the DC Swamp Monsters to make him conform to the “normal” rules and procedures of Washington.

Nicole Kidman´s impassioned acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the Emmys -- but careful listeners noticed something both telling and troubling. The actress devoted the conclusion of her speech to her immediate family, with special recognition to her two children. The only problem? She has four. “I have two little girls, Sunday and Faith, and my darling Keith, who I ask to help me pursue this artistic path, and they have to sacrifice so much for it,” Kidman said as she accepted her award for Outstanding Lead Actress in "Big Little Lies." She then spoke directly to the girls: "So this is yours. I want my little girls to

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded President Donald Trump´s address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, calling it "bold" and "courageous." The climatistas really are a fun and lovable bunch to watch. Also pathetic. They are victims of their own doomsday scenarios of inexorably rising greenhouse gas levels and the parade of horribles soon to follow. The Paris Accord, even if fully implemented, will barely slow any future warming accord to the standard climate orthodoxy (better known as “The Consensus”). That’s why the former NASA chief climatista James Hansen called the Paris Accord “a fraud.” What do you do when, having told us for more than 20 years that “we only have ten years left” to act, the deadline passes and we haven’t got anywhere close to a

ST. After the storm, USF officials moved to fire USFSP regional chancellor Sophia Wisniewska for incompetence and "lack of leadership," criticizing her departure and alleging that she had hesitated to evacuate students as Irma grew more dangerous. They are on a treadmill sometimes called a "national conversation" from which they cannot get off. People who claim to be shocked that Donald Trump is prepared to make an amnesty deal for the"Dreamers" -- most of whom are Mexicans who entered the USA at around the age of six -- are being more than a tad disingenuous. The president has been hinting as much for over a year to anyone paying attention. In fact, it´s hard to conceive how he could have done otherwise, considering the (excuse the cliché) "optics" of shipping 800,000 young people back to a homeland they may never have seen. The question is what your definition of amnesty is. It´s a

From Shakespeare to Irma:

It was odd to think about Shakespeare during a hurricane, but the Bard knew his storms. From "King Lear" to "The Tempest," where there was a Will, there was a wave, and often a deluge. Shakespeare liked his storms because they placed his characters under pressure, scattered them to the corners of the Earth, made them strangers in strange lands, and tested what they were made of. He knew that all humans – even kings – looked tiny in the face of a storm. None more so than King Lear, the ancient monarch who made the mistake dividing his kingdom among his

Despite all the chatter, there aren’t any fascists involved in the clashes involving the misnamed “white nationalists” and “antifa” (antifascists). Each side accuses the other of “fascism.” But fascism was destroyed in the Second World War, and insofar as there are still some scattered remnants, they are non-Western (the Iranian Islamic Republic and the Islamic State “caliphate” are perhaps good examples). But “fascism” as it originated, and came to power, in Europe is gone, and there is no sign of contemporary revival. There has never been a viable fascist movement or party in the United States (any more than there has

David Meade, a self-proclaimed “researcher,” is predicting that a series of apocalyptic events will begin on Sept. 23 and, “a major part of the world will not be the same.” According to Meade, the mysterious rogue planet Nibiru, also known as Planet X, is on a collision course with Earth, which will bring world-ending tsunamis and earthquakes. The numerologist claims the dates of recent events like the Great American Solar Eclipse and Hurricane Harvey’s flooding of Texas were all marked in the Bible.
