Martin Landau, Actor Who Won
an Oscar for ‘Ed Wood,’ Dies at 89

New York Times, by Anita Gates

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 7/16/2017 10:30:49 PM

Martin Landau, the tall, intense, sometimes mischievously sinister actor best known for his role in the television series “Mission: Impossible” and his Oscar-winning portrayal of Bela Lugosi in the film “Ed Wood,” died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 89. His death was confirmed by his publicist. Mr. Landau starred on the hit CBS suspense drama “Mission: Impossible” as Rollin Hand, a versatile covert-operations agent, from its debut in 1966 until 1969. After the show’s third season, he and Barbara Bain, his wife and co-star, left because of a contractual dispute. But the series had served its purpose.

Comments:
One of my favorite lines ever came from him in "Ed Wood". It wasn´t just what he said, but the way he delivered it. It truly always makes me laugh. Thanks, Martin. R.I.P.

From "Ed Wood", as Bella Lugosi: "Home? I have no home. Hunted... despised... living like an animal. The jungle is my home! But I will show the world that I can be its master. I shall perfect my own race of people... a race of atomic supermen that will conquer the world!"

Wow hard to believe he was 89. He was superb on MI until Desilu got greedy and wouldn´t give him a raise.Bain got mad and quit wrecking the show. I´ve seen every episode dozens of times now blocked by youtube.

My favorite movie is "Joseph"; Landau portrays Jacob/Israel, father of the Twelve Tribes. He is marvelous in this Ted Turner masterpiece. I watch it at least once a week. (I didn´t know that Turner produced religious themed movies, but this one goes beyond any label.)

Loved Mission Impossible! One of my early crushes as a young lad was Barbara Bain [not to mention Pat Priest and Agent 99 and Mary Ann on the island, but I digress].

OP, I believe I know exactly which line you are referring to; it has to do with his opinion of another gentleman´s fitness to, how shall I say, get a whiff of the situation?

Who can ever forget the brilliant theme song and the struck match? Landau was my hero; he was part of my childhood.
This very well-written article just goes to show you that when the NYTimes WANTS to, they can write a completely fair, objective, unbiased, factual piece which informs the reader about an event. Imagine that.

Mission Impossible was must see TV for me. Martin and his wife at the time were an integral part of the show. The whole cast was great. Peter Graves was so suave, barney, the tech genius was great. Willy was dumped from the show for a while, but fan outrage brought him back. The best MI shows were when Desilu Studios were in charge, the idiots at Paramount cheapen the show, but I still watched.

Beijing - China hit back on Thursday at recent criticism from the United States about its trade practices, saying some countries’ unilateralism is an unprecedented challenge to global trade. Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng also said that foreign and domestic firms are treated equally in China and that foreign firms should not have concerns about investing in China. The comments come amid stepped up pressure on Beijing from Washington over trade and pledges by China to further open its markets to foreign investors. “Some countries’ unilateral actions and calls for unilateralism are an unprecedented challenge to the

San Francisco - An international group of cryptography experts has forced the U.S. National Security Agency to back down over two data encryption techniques it wanted set as global industry standards, reflecting deep mistrust among close U.S. allies. In interviews and emails seen by Reuters, academic and industry experts from countries including Germany, Japan and Israel worried that the U.S. electronic spy agency was pushing the new techniques not because they were good encryption tools, but because it knew how to break them. The NSA has now agreed to drop all but the most powerful versions of the techniques -

Rand Paul: Don’t blow up Iran deal

Sen. Rand Paul, who opposed the nuclear deal with Iran two years ago, wants the United States to stay in the agreement — even as President Donald Trump sends clues that he is preparing to derail it. In an interview Wednesday, the Kentucky Republican said he believes evidence shows that Iran has been complying with the terms of the deal, cut by former President Barack Obama and aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Instead of withdrawing from the nuclear deal, Paul argued that the administration should instead look at a deal that would target Iran’s continuing ballistic missile program.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, normally no fan of Donald Trump’s — to put it mildly — nonetheless came out in defense of the president’s speech before the United Nations. In short, Scarborough actually liked it. Check the skies for flying pigs. Scarborough regularly speaks of Trump in the most critical of tones. If he ain’t mocking, he’s gagging. But post-General Assembly speech? Why, even Scarborough has kind words. “This speech, minus the bombast, could have been written by Secretary [James] Mattis, could have been written by General [H.R.] McMaster, could have been written by Ambassador Nikki Haley,” he said,

Washington - Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel, has asked the White House for documents about some of President Trump’s most scrutinized actions since taking office, including the firing of his national security adviser and F.B.I. director, according to White House officials. Mr. Mueller is also interested in an Oval Office meeting Mr. Trump had with Russian officials in which he said the dismissal of the F.B.I. director had relieved “great pressure” on him. The document requests provide the most details to date about the breadth of Mr. Mueller’s investigation, and show that several aspects of his inquiry are focused

Since it began more than two weeks ago, CNN has provided a paltry 14 minutes and 11 seconds of coverage to the corruption trial of Democratic Senator Robert Menendez. In fact, the 24-hour cable news network has mentioned the trial only once since September 7. For contrast, on just one day (September 18), CNN spent more than 45 minutes analyzing former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s 60-second appearance at the Emmy Awards ceremony the night before. And that total doesn’t include all of CNN’s coverage of the Emmys, just the portions specifically about Spicer. This lack of coverage for Menendez’s
