Our Significant Insignificance:
The Universe and Us

American Thinker, by Bill Schanefelt

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? - Psalm 8:4 -Every once in a while an article comes along that reminds us of our insignificance in the grand scope of the Universe and that at the same time prompts us to think of the significance of our very existence in that Universe. Thanks to our friends at Hot Air we are linked to one. Nick Hughes, an Irish Research Council postdoctoral research fellow at University College Dublin, has written a compelling piece at Aeon that explores our minuteness in the vastness of the Cosmos: Humanity occupies a very small

At the end he mentions the New Atheists who will give you a headache!
Materialists will agree with them that mankind is insignificant. Yet we have intellect unlike any animal and the power of the intellect is one of God’s greatest gifts to us. Our duty on earth is to learn to know & worship God Who created us. We must follow the great commandment to love God & God our neighbor. "As for the spiritual perfections they are man’s birthright and belong to him alone of all creation. Man is, in reality, a spiritual being, and only when he lives in the spirit is he truly happy. This spiritual longing and perception belongs to all men alike."

Most followers of faiths believe in creation myths

many tenets fail to hold up under the scrutiny of modern science,

We are alone in this vast expanse of space and time. And that is precisely why man continues to try and be GOD rather than seek Him.

Romans 3:10-11 says just as it is written,

“There is no one righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.

Yet GOD says in Psalm 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth.

Because he makes Himself know in his creation.

What scares atheists and those that are without GOD is the fact he exists and will one day hold them to account. Hence, man has to be god to prove GOD doesn´t exist.

Sorry to be negative, but how many of us will be remembered a century after we pass on? How many of our accomplishments will be remembered? Nothing lasts forever.

There is a design to the universe. That design is to drive us into the arms of our creator of our own free will. Is there an alternative? Don´t see any.

As Reagan said, they know so much that isn´t so.

Put another way: The only thing that we know, is how little we actually know.

If we are alone in this vast universe, or if we are not: either prospect is mind boggling. If we have been created, or if this is all thermodynamic evolution: dittos.

We are; we believe that God is. That is what we need to "go forth".

I´m a bit more pragmatic about "God, the Universe and Everything". I don´t even try to comprehend what "God" might or might not be. I seldom pray and when I do it is against my better judgement- That´s because I figure what ever God is, it really is not too interested in my 2 cents worth. If I knew what God knows, I imagine I might think my opinions and wishes would be more important to God. But, I don´t.

I just marvel at God´s creation and am pretty thankful I got to be aware within in it. I think of God more like an artist. God made man so we could appreciate a new born baby´s beauty, and the wonder of a glorious sunset or sunrise, or enjoy when God sends us a fantastic snowy morning´s quiet. Every artist needs someone to appreciate and enjoy the work they make. So, here we are- God´s "Appreciators".

If you do not enjoy God´s creations, then what good are you? So, once in a while, you need to stop and take it all in and then when it is past , take a minute and just tell God, "Thanks- that was really beautiful...I enjoyed it." That makes God smile, I think. And there can be no doubt about it, God loves to smile.

Re: 4, and only a flash at that. What a wonderfully provocative article that leads to greater depths. Yes, we are here, maybe, probably, the sole inheritors of the universe. But we have it for less than a blink of the eye. Whatever the situation, we have less than the blink of the eye to make our contribution. God, tries to help us in this matter by providing His written word to guide us. At the end, I guess, is what have I done to contribute to the understanding of Life. I guess we are each that next step, in the sense of the journey of life begins with a step.
So far, each step for me has been a stumble. All I can do is pick myself up and try again. I do count L.dot has one of those choices in life to be worth the time spent.

I would like to share a couple of facts about the Universe some people might find interesting:

1. There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the beaches and in all the deserts on Earth.

2. The Universe as is (fine tuning constants) was either a one off creation event or one of an infinite number of universes being created constantly due to inflation effects and the materialization of every quantum either / or event.

3. Being created in God´s image provides all the significance anyone ever needs as long as one approaches this idea in humility and truth.

#9: Yours is a reasonable take. Mine is that we are God´s avatars. God created the universe or multiverse, and created avatars [us] to "experience" it. Our universe is a bit like The Matrix.

This fits with our being "temples of the Holy Spirit", and scriptural admonitions to behave in a holy manner. It also fits with God knowing our every thought, etc. It is also consistent with John 17:3.

What is the truth? Once again: The only thing that we know, is how little we actually know.

God created us to experience His [gender not relevant] universe: show Him a pleasing time.
