The entire Fort Lauderdale Police Department should undergo extra training on how to properly treat transgender people, a city panel has decided. The suggestion came Monday during a Citizens Police Review Board hearing for a police officer who categorized a transgender woman as male on a citation. The board, which serves as a watchdog group over police, also decided the officer should receive a written reprimand for the incident. “I think it’s fair,” said board member Marc Dickerson. “It’s a matter of training and the officers need training.” Officer James Brinton faced a complaint from Shelby Kendall after he pulled

My Transgender Consulting firm will train the entire Fort Lauderdale police force on the subtleties of distinguishing a woman from a man from a transgendered freak from a transvestite prostitute for only $750,000. What a bargain!

I don´t think his ticket form had anything but Male/Female.

IF he had a third choice of: FREAK, that would apply.

Whatever "it is" put all citizens at risk by driving reckless and the cop did his job and will get a written reprimand for it.
How does a simple notation of sex cause any harm? The true training the cops will learn is different.

The cop categorized a male pretending to be a female as male. "She" is clearly a male, and the cop thought the license was incorrect. I think the only sane one in this is the cop.

Can´t someone make this kind of thing stop! This person clearly looks like a male - if this person says they are a woman, then they need to be reprimanded, NOT the police officer.

We are talking about a tiny fraction of 1% of our population - how in the world do they deserve so much media time.

Stand tall officer, we need more commonsense on our national PD´s right now. You want a more nonjudgmental force? Give them better options and they will willingly comply.

Let´s step back - there is a militant group of trans folks out there who are always looking for ways to be offended by "misgendering" . . . if the city adopts a policy of how to deal with offenders whose classification on their license does not match their appearance it will be protective of officers.

Sort of a . . . no matter how much the offender looks like a male if their license says they are female put female on the ticket. Someone above your pay grade can then deal with any problems.

I did notice the reprimand while recommended has to be signed off on by others - bet it doesn´t happen.
