Senate Democrats blocking
Trump court picks

Washington Times, by Alex Swoyer

Senate Democrats are turning to procedural tactics to delay confirmation of President Trump’s appeals court picks, and conservative groups are firing back with a new ad in Michigan trying to force two Democrats to clear a path for one embattled nominee. (Snip) The senators are flexing the chamber’s “blue slip” tradition, which gives individual lawmakers an exceptional amount of say in judges from their home state. Under the tradition, if both home-state senators don’t return their blue slips, signaling acceptance, Senate leaders will hold off on action on that pick. Neither Ms. Stabenow nor Mr. Peters have returned their

It seems that Congress has more "delaying tactics" that have an adverse effect on our ability to have judges appointed by the current elected president. We were lucky to holdout till Judge Neil Gorsuch was confirmed. But holding out on Appeals Court nominees that oversee the cases before the Supreme Court seems petty when mostly activist ones seem to get through the process.

The "Blue-Slip" tradition is an anachronism that should be abolished the way the Senate changed the SCOTUS nomination process.

Suspend the ´blue slip´ procedure for 18 months. The democrats will get the message.
And we´ll get judges appointed.

It´s time for a new policy.

Senators will return a "blue slip" within (7) seven working days unless they can provide proof of unsuitability of the judge in question for promotion. Acceptable proof must be one of two options:

1) Historical record of more than 50% of rulings being overturned on appeal.

2) Recommendation of the state´s bar association that the judge not be promoted, concurred by 50% of the members of the bar.

No other objections shall apply, no extensions to the (7) seven day time limit allowed.

I believe that the Constitution says something like the "Senate" to "advise and consent" to judicial nominations. NOT just two senators. For allowing that to happen is simply not acceptable. The entire country should rise up in arms for this to be allowed. Put pressure on the entire senate to put a stop of it.

Let´s not be hypocritical about blocking confirmation votes for political reasons, when the GOP blocked confirmation of Obie´s nominee for Justice Scalia´s vacant seat, betting that a Republican victory in November would allow a Republican President to make that nomination, instead.

The blocking of the Scalia replacement by McConnell (the only good thing he has ever done) was just using the Democrats´ standard of not replacing a Supreme when an election was pending. I think their time frame was ONE YEAR. Scalia passed in February with an election coming in November, so the time fram was even shorter. So, for once Republicans stuck it right back to the Dems.

As to playing patty cake with this blue slip tradition, I agree with poster 6 give them a week to come up with a substantial reason not to vote and after that, Republicans grow a pair and just vote. Oh and if Snow, McCain, Makowski and other Pubbies vote against Republican interests, they should be primaried if they are coming up for re-election or the subject of a re-call if they have been recently elected.

This is war and we need to fight it to win. Keeping a tradition for the sake of the tradition or appearing gentlemanly doesn´t win battles. Take no prisoners.

Rand Paul: Don’t blow up Iran deal

Sen. Rand Paul, who opposed the nuclear deal with Iran two years ago, wants the United States to stay in the agreement — even as President Donald Trump sends clues that he is preparing to derail it. In an interview Wednesday, the Kentucky Republican said he believes evidence shows that Iran has been complying with the terms of the deal, cut by former President Barack Obama and aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Instead of withdrawing from the nuclear deal, Paul argued that the administration should instead look at a deal that would target Iran’s continuing ballistic missile program.
